Had to come by and comment, after watching this video and the rear main seal video several times I was confident enough to attack my rear main seal. It took 13 hours with a couple friends helping. Take your time and it will go fine. I did not drain the transmission, nor did I remove the driveshaft from the tail shaft. I wasn't sure, and am still not sure if the fluid would come out if I had pulled the drive shaft. We did experience some minor leakage from the dip stick tube hole in the trans but not much. Thank you again for this wonderful 4l60E series! PS to everyone reading comments, find your inner Zen before you thread the torque converter bolts back in. I dropped the first one into the bell housing. Luckily after several frustrating minutes I was able to snag it blindly with a magnet. It could have been pull the transmission again but I got lucky, take your time with this step!

Just finished replacing the rear main seal (RMS) on my Yukon and not a leak anywhere! Thanks guys for this awesome tutorial! Few tips for anyone attempting this repair. 1. Mark the position of the driveshaft at universal joint (paint marker) 2. Mark driveshaft at rear of transmission (paint marker) 3. Mark relationship of torque converter to drive plate through inspection plate at bottom of the trans. These must align during install. 4. Clean alignment dowels protruding from engine block and holes in the trans. Use some emory cloth to remove the rust and add a light coat of anti seize. Makes for smooth install. 5. RMS install. PTFE (newer style seal) goes in dry. No lube is necessary to install in seal to the RMS plate. 6. Clean RMS plate and engine block mating surfaces. Especially the bottom corners where the engine block meets the oil pan. Cleaned mine 3 times with brake cleaner.

A few things to remember: 1. While this is common sense, you should remember that when you take off the Transmission support, have a jack with some wood to under the transmission pan to hold the weight of the transmission. If you don't it can put stress on your engine mounts, which can give you a completely different problem. 2. When undoing the gear selector cable (at least on my suburban) there was also a large metal clip that looks like an unused staple. You have to pull that out with a flat head screwdriver before you can squeeze it and pop it out of place. 3. There is another bolt that holds some lines above the connectors that you have to heat up. It looks like a 8mm bolt that holds a bracket to the driver's side of the transmission. 4. This is more of an observation of the video itself. While it was very helpful and to the point, there were a few key things missing that made me question some things. I did notice that there were a couple times where the transmission didn't look supported the entire time the support bar was gone. This can potentially cause damage to the engine and engine mounts. There were a few brackets/clips that were not mentioned. I figure that is probably due in part to the fact that he said this transmission has been taken off before, so it may not gave all of its original pieces. That being said this was an extremely helpful video. Though I would suggest adding the step of supporting the transmission.
@dudewecanfixit2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the well thought out comment. On my next transmission series, I will definitely consider adding some of these steps.

Great video man. I am trying to tackle this job myself for the first time in an '04 Escalade ESV. Dealer quoted me almost 6,000 to replace the trans in a vehicle I paid $3,100 for. I couldn't believe it. I have always wanted a car lift at my house so I used this as my "excuse" to buy the lift. $6,000 for the trans versus $400 for used rebuilt trans on marketplace plus about $6,000 for the 2 post lift and 24x20 concrete pad installation. Figured I was getting a "free" lift if I did the trans myself lol. We'll see how it goes. Props to you doing it on the ground.
@dudewecanfixit6 ай бұрын
That's a great way to look at it! 🤣 I can swap a transmission on the ground in a day. Surely, the lift will help with that. Be careful, the transmission is heavy and having it up in the air can be dangerous without the right help or tools. Other than that, it will be much easier to work on! 1 day labor for $6000 slab and lift? I think you made the right choice!
@SkinnySkinch6 ай бұрын
@@dudewecanfixit Yeah I was worried about that. I was thinking about buying a transmission jack from harbor freight. But I have a few dirt bike/motorcycle scissor lifts that I think are 400 lb weight limit. has a nice wide flat rubber top Was thinking that may work. Worst case I can lower the lift down once all the works done and use some floor jacks to finish lowering the trans down then just lift the truck back up on the lift. I noticed I have quite a bit more crap to take off with this AWD Escalade.

Great detailed information on taking these transmissions out. Mine TB 4l60E has just over 270,000 miles on it, and has now started slipping. I will be replacing the transmission with a low mileage junk yard one. I am buying a transmission jack from harbor freight to do the job, and can take my time, since I will have my own jack. I already have an impact wrench, so I think I have everything I need. I will save a lot of money doing this myself. Shops I checked want over $5,000 to do it, and I should be able to do this with a low mileage used transmission, and a few new tools for less than $1,500. The used transmission I get will have a warranty too. I think the warranty is 12 months. If it is anything like my current transmission the it should last me about another 200,000 miles.

Finally a basic to the point trans removal video. I need to put a high stall torque converter in my Trailblazer SS. Im sure I'll be watching this 10 more times before I actually do mine. Im worried about those top bolts . I dont think I'll have the room that you did.
@dudewecanfixit Жыл бұрын
When you are ready to remove the top bolts, you can lower the transmission jack a few inches and let the transmission sag to access those bolts. Do not completely remove the transmission jack

So simple that's by far from simple unless you have a lift ...
@randallstewart84874 жыл бұрын
@@vincentgomez4435 You have to get it up high enough to slide trans out,use good safety stands and block wheels for added safety!
@dudewecanfixit4 жыл бұрын
It's not bad. I don't have a lift, just make sure you have good jack stands with adequate height

looking at replacing the rear main seal and plate/gasket on my dad's 02 Z71 and this makes me feel a little better. I've been turning wrenches for over 30 years but sometimes its nice to have a step by step on these things. my dread is the fact that I have a transfer case to deal with as well since its a 4wd
@dudewecanfixit7 ай бұрын
You have an extra driveshaft and about 6 bolts to remove the transfer case from the transmission. Its a little extra, but not that bad!

Just pulled my transmission today. Was such a pain. The flywheel/torque converter bolts were not 15mm, mine were hex bolts. Removed 2 and the third stripped. Got it out with a air hammer. Made what should have been a 2-3 hour job into 10 hours. Hoping the install is smooth. Very helpful videos just mine is a bit different for whatever reason
@dudewecanfixit2 жыл бұрын
They may have been replaced in the past. I would go to a Chevy dealership and get new bolts with normal 15mm heads

You guys made this look too easy. I am rebuilding off of transmission bench, but also look at everyone else's videos too. And your video is the one I chose for removing the transmission. I am knocking it out...... or is it knocking me out???? Lol man I been getting my ass whipped, but I am down to my last few bolts. All the hard ones are done. I also broke lose my o2 sensors instead of unplugging them.... o well. Too late now. By the way I found a tip for removing stuck exhaust bolts. Start up the vehicle and let it get to operating temperature. It worked like a dream for me. Saved me $50 plus on buying a torch. It even loosened up the o2 sensors. I haven't been recording it one because I am having a hard time anyways and 2 I only have a few hours in the colder parts of the day to do this. I might make a video before I get done. I don't know. Will be on a different channel of mine though. Anyways thanks for the video! It is coming in very handy. Word to those who give up easy. Don't try this if you aren't sure you can do it or will atleast promise yourself not to give up! Lol 🤣😩

UPDATE:Cannot believe I ran across my comment!! 2Years ago?! Wow time flys! I had my transmission rebuilt a couple days after this comment and she been running strong ever since! $1,650 out the door with (I think) a 2 year, 3,000mile warranty. I’m in need of a job and I’m thinking about going to work for the same guy/shop that rebuilt my Tranny.He just cannot find anyone who wants to work! He told me, he just needs someone to Unbolt and Bolt the transmissions! Very very Clean shop! And in the summer Big bay doors stay closed for most part and it stays nice and cold.Winter stays warm. Very nice guy and the most reputable Trans shop here in South Alabama! He told me he is willing to pay at least $22h/r maybe more for the right person! He’s getting old and he is really knowledgeable! I will learn a lot I know!Im really thinking about doing it! What do you guys think?! Negative/Positive/sarcastic,Etc advice is welcome!
