I work as an aircraft mechanic on ATR 42. One of the things which amaze me is that it does not have any hydraulic assistance for main flight controls (There are, however, hydraulic spoilers which move together with ailerons), instead using variety of aerodynamic tricks to ease forces on the yoke. One less thing to wrong I guess.

@ Nikko Andrew Parangue That is known as roll upset and is actually one of the advantages manual controls have over powered ones.. and why you’re not supposed to fly on autopilot in severe icing conditions. Controls that are snatched from your hands indicate roll or pitch upset and tell you that you should increase speed and not change configuration.

I once flew on an ATR 42 with American Eagle in 1992, from Raliegh Durham to Charlotte NC. The thing I noticed was that it was somewhat less noiser than most turboprop airliners. It appeared to have thicker cabin insulation that somewhat muffled the low pitched drone that's produced by the props. My girlfriend gave it the nickname, "The Whisperprop". I wish that Boeing 737s and Airbus A 300's were turboprop instead of conventional fan jet, Though a bit slower, turboprops are more fuel efficient than fan jet engines. I also love the sound that the props make, the "Box Fan" sound full ground idle and taxiing, and the "Bumblebee" sound in takeoff and inflight. Some say driving a manual transmission vehicle is "Real Driving". I say flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"!

The ATR is a great aircraft for making money and keeping people employed. It asks a bit of one's handling skills near the ground but with good training and some and ice-awareness it will lift a lot, burn very little and open new routes. A reliable platform with a long future ahead. Edit: according to Wiki, the major icing event was an American company in 1994. I suspect back then ice awareness training was not mandatory, and has caused many crashes in many aircraft, most commonly from not dealing with it in a certain way and timely manner. Also, icing conditions involved in that flight were severe, and to the best of my knowledge no aircraft are certified to fly in severe icing. 'TransAsia Airways' makes up roughly half of all accidents in the ATR, which does not help the ATR's reputation. Thanks Skyships!

@happyface96
@happyface96 4 жыл бұрын
True. But did you know the history of how that happened? It was in 98 during the asian economic crisis when IMF told Indonesia to holt their indigenous prop plane programme in exchange for monetary aid, a move which then made ATR 1 competitor less in the Indonesian market. Same tactics done by EU and WTO to boycott Indo/Malay Palm Oil so that their sunflower seed oil can get an advantage in the biofuel global market.

The ATR 72 was the only turboprop my mom and I flew on. Before flying on that turboprop, she refused to fly on propeller and turboprop airplanes and would rather fly on passenger jets. Even after having an experience onboard the ATR 72 with Cebu Pacific back in 2019, we never liked it because of the uncomfortable seats and small overhead bins too small that we had to check in bags. However, we got what we paid for because Cebu Pacific is a budget airline along with its branch Cebgo. Even if that experience wasn't enjoyable because we never felt safe in that type of plane, turboprops shouldn't go obsolete because those planes would only make sense to be utilized in small airports that have shorter runways and limited service.

They can be tricky for inexperienced pilots or those with limited intelligence. Crosswind TOGO or landings can be challenging. The wing surface area is designed for fuel efficiency, not maximum lift and low speed flight. Redesigned wings that are longer and larger would make it better.

Air NZ through its subsidiary Mt Cook Airlines, is the 3rd largest operator the ATR72-500/600 in the world. Air NZ has found the ATR72, to be economical and reliable but is not as fastest as the airline's Q300. ATR is in discussions with Air NZ about using the ATR42-600S (short take off/landing version) to replace some of the aging Q300's. I have found the -600 quieter and less vibration than the -500.

Got to wonder if Air NZ will ever get the Q400. Air Nelson has been asking Air NZ to upgrade their Q300 to Q400 in the past and got denied as the Bombardier aircraft are not as efficient, but they sound more ergonomic as mentioned in the comments and the - 400 carries over 80 passengers.

@@captaindusty4884 I read somewhere that a Q400 costs 31 million dollars and an ATR 72 26 million. Price of the Q400 may even go up when Viking Air starts building them. ATR also has the advantage of the Airbus service network. It's a very competitive market.
@chrismckellar9350
@chrismckellar9350 5 жыл бұрын
@@captaindusty4884 - Air Nelson originally wanted the Q400 but was given the Q300 instead, as the 23 Q300's purchased were cheap due to the end of the Q300 production. Air NZ wants to operate the ATR for all regional services as they are cheaper to operate plus the ATR fleet will have update RNP for all weather operations and be compatible to the virtual (unmanned) control tower system that New Zealand is introducing from 2020.

I lived in Cape Verde for a good while. Cape Verde airlines has a lot of ATRs and I used to know many of its pilots. It is not only some good aircraft for travelling in, it is also a very interesting aircraft to pilot they used to say. However, the "faint of heart" wont be too comfortable with its noise or the sensation the short distance of the engines to the body of the plane gives.

They (ATR) actually had agreed on a name, which was Colibrì (Humming Bird). It was the official name of the ATR42, but nobody ever really used it, and it is now forgotten.

I thought the icing problems these jets had would have been worth mentioning. Weren't there 3 or 4 crashes in quick succession in the 90s due to icing?

No ! There was ONE. Roselawn Indiana and the icing conditions were so freakishly severe ANY aircraft that used boots would have gone down. I flew this plane all over Maine and New England in winter conditions with no problems. That incident gave the ATR a VERY undeserved black eye.

Good summary and nice choices of footage. One minor comment. Your phrasing and the order of the film clips implies that European practice followed the Dash 7 and very successful Dash 8. You show a Fokker F27. This made its maiden flight two DECADES before the D-7 and nearly three before the D-8. It was the first really successful smaller regional, propeller-turbine-powered in the short/medium range category and was then popularly classed as a ‘DC3 replacement.’ Ell over 400 were built, a similar number to the 4-engine Viscount - which was intended for medium ranges. Not bad sales for the 50s and early 60s.
