It was well established that none of the jack brown planes use radios. It’s unacceptable in this day and age in my opinion. I don’t care if it isnt required by law, a handheld radio is $200 and would have saved four lives. Ridiculous.
@LewDixAviation

That's definitely a major problem. I don't care how old an aircraft is, it needs to be operated safely for the given conditions. Busy airport, uncontrolled, not making radio calls? Recipe for disaster.

Just completed my Type rating for ATR 72-500 and we practiced kind of the same situation as Yeti airlines. My simulator partner asked for flaps 30 on the final, my instructor cut the condition lever instead. As I was on the left seat I landed the aircraft and amazingly it was one of the smoothest landings I've ever had.

Love the podcast series, have my own story on communications; I went into an uncontrolled airport with my CFI, I was on radio changes and dialed in the wrong frequency, was doing all my calls, unusually quiet, started on final and there was a twin headed straight for us, we veered away and figured out we were on the wrong frequency, the concerning part for me was that the twin didn’t take any evasive action, unnerving; now I triple check my frequencies, stay safe!

Just finished up my lesson on risk management (literally taught it before watching this) and I think all the points you made on the ATR incident were right on. It seems like at times, we want to do things without verifying because outside of aviation the perception is of you're double checking, you're unsure. Someone who I was practice teaching told a story of when he took up his mom with him for the first time after he got his license. As he was reading through his checklist, she asked "Wait, don't you know how to fly this thing?" Of course, we all want to pretend that we're in a Top Gun movie where checklists don't exist because we're just "that good." Another great point in that section was not just reading the checklist but actually verifying that the action was completed. Definitely a good thing to to think about after we've gotten comfortable in an airplane, guess we don't want to get too comfortable haha. Keep the podcasts coming!

Love the comment at the end regarding instructors and instructing. Sometimes letting the mistakes happen and instructing with your words. I really like my instructor, and this is the way he operates. I flew with another instructor once and on that one flight he grabbed the controls twice (more like snatched). Once we were doing a tight turn and I was at too much of a bank angle. I feel it would have been better for me if he had said something and I could have corrected, instead he just grabbed the controls. Everyone teaches different but for me, that just built up my anxiety and I really prefer to fly with someone different now. All good. I still like the guy, but at 3500 ft I’m thinking we had plenty of time to correct if something had happened. I really didn’t need him to grab the controls. Would have been different if we were turning base to final at 1800ft.

I'm a modular CPL student in the UK, we call it modular and intergrated instead of 61/141 but i totally agree. I sometimes see the intergrated schools as airline pilot factories. I'ts nothing against the students at all, all intergrated students i've flown with are good pilots but i feel like they get rushed through training more compared to the modular route. (this is obviously a little biased coming from a modular student 😂) Loving the podcasts!! Keep up the great work :)

Hey Lewis, this is a welcomed addition! Great breakdown of both accidents, especially the Winter Haven tragedy. You're right to be angry about it, especially since you've had close calls over there. I, too, had a close call like that except that the old fart, in my story, had a radio but didn't know how to properly state his location in the pattern..... and literally just showed up ("Oh, hey there!") in our windscreen on the downwind leg. I need to go back and catch the first podcast. 🙂

One correction on the Nepal crash record, the Pulot flying was a her, not a him. Otherwise, it seems spot on. I've read that belief is that because both pilots were new to the airport, the Pilot Monitor was looking outside rather than focusing on instruments.

As much as I've often thought the FISO idea in the UK is over the top [talking about local air traffic at small airfields], it's better than having no one keeping an eye on things! Sounds wild that some airfields in the US are allowed to have as many aircraft movements as they do without real time oversight. Having said that, I love the 'FREEDOM!' in the US style of GA. @ludix I had a near miss on my first cross country with my instructor. Herlong rec airport Jacksonville FL. We had just did our radio call with a straight out heading for departure. Long story short 900 agl@ over the fence I see a red Cherokee on short final nose to nose. I saw the man's Oakley glass as I managed to see him as we passed. I saw this before my instructor. He told me great job and well done. He knew that guy wasn't going to do full stop and we couldn't catch up to him. My instructor didn't take control because I was already doing what exactly what I needed to. Had a great lesson. As a result I am hyper vigilant in Un towered airports. He knew he was in trouble. No radio call as he did his touch and go.

I once (as a student) pulled mixture instead of applying carb heat on downwind in a PA28 - the feel of the levers is irrelevant, - when the brain farts, it farts! I was distracted by unusual radio calls on that particular approach. Pulling the mixture isn't even a normal thing to do until engine shutdown, so I have no idea why I did it, other than "move hand from throttle and pull something".

First off great podcast Lewis... lot of difficult topics in this one. Waiting on sims at Silver... been doing my homework on the flows and systems and such and I got to agree on all the comments with the Yeti crash. Lot of little things built up to the resultant accident. And as far as the Jack Browns crash. Apparently the J3's have NO electrical system so they try to have a standardized way of entering into their seaplane base. The Cessna crew was doing short approaches too and the path ultimately resulted in a mid air. I don't really know whos to blame per say, but the lack of radio calls and some other elements definitely make it seem like some changes in procedures need to happen at Jack Browns.
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. The Yeti thing is just so weird. I was flying the ATR the other day and I was up at cruise looking at the flap lever and condition lever wondering how they could be confused with each other. It’s baffling. It’s easy to sit here and say that because we don’t know what was going on with those pilots but it’s a real head scratcher. I don’t know who is to blame for the midair, but I do think it’s a massive risk to fly around busy airports with no radios. That’s another head scratcher to me.

👏👏👏 Lewis, I swear you read my thoughts. As far as the ATR Crash, could the instructor have been testing to see if the PIC was paying attention and just let it go too long? I'm an ATP push through and back during the VID-19 lie I was Zooming the CFI ground school, then we went in for the spin training and flights. My first CFI checkride lasted 15 minutes of the oral with the DPE. Dropped from ATP and a year later, the 2nd try passed oral, but I quit teaching during me trying to fix my errors in the flight portion. Now here at the end of April, I'm going back up to do the whole CFI checkride again. Up to this point, I had not had one bust all the way throughout ATPs zero to Commercial. Do you think I will have an issue after reaching my 1500hr and ATP-CTP with the airlines? What Checkride do you think is the one not to bust so the airlines option is not out the window? ❤ your Channels and hope to meet you in the future.

My dad, brother, best friend and I went to Taco Tuesday at Arcadia, and landed at KGIF five minutes before the midair. In all the times I've flown at KGIF(a lot), none of the Jack Brown's planes have been a factor. Other traffic, like fast moving Bonanzas, Cirrus', twin engines, and training flights from KISM have been more of a danger factor to me.
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation Жыл бұрын
Yea this wasn't just about any one aircraft. It's just a dangerous airport because of the way people operate in and out of it. It's crazy!
@paperclipmaniac
@paperclipmaniac Жыл бұрын
@@LewDixAviation I understand that on a long enough timeline, things are dangerous. But when everyone says, "if only those darn Jack Brown's Cubs had radios, none of this would have happened!", like as a factual statement. But when I see Bonanza's taking off from runway 05, when there's three planes in an established pattern for 11 or 23, that's kinda dangerous, with or without radios. When a Cessna 310 does 190 knots to dive into the base leg in front of me, just so he can land 30 seconds sooner, that's kinda dangerous. Or the mystery Grumman N7200L, circling over the threshold of 05, no radio calls, while planes are yelling at this guy to stop flying directly at them on final. Did the radios help there? The biggest factor for the midair, was either the Cub was too high, or the Cherokee was too low. I'm not trying to argue with you or anyone, just trying to point out that people with radios don't make calls and fly dangerously sometimes, it happens.

Love your channel Lew! I just soloed a couple days ago, and am really looking forward to getting my PPL at age 51. I don't think a career change is in the cards for me (not why I'm doing it) but it was interesting to hear that you think that it wouldn't be too late to fly people around. I am curious about the second accident you covered. Would you be for a change in the rules that would mandate ADSB and radios (along with requiring calls at untowered airports)? Honestly when I hear from my brother about how there was no such thing as iPads and ADSB when he got his license and everything was done on paper, it's hard to believe that not more accidents happened. The iPad in the cockpit seems like such a great safety tool, I'm surprised people fly without.

I fly out of an uncontrolled airport and there are at least three Cubs based there that fly regularly. Fortunately, all of them have radios and do a good job making regular calls on the CTAF so they're not an issue. But, you're right, it's not required. And, as the J3 has no electrical system, not only will it not have ADS-B Out, the regulations state that it *cannot* be so equipped. While I understand that the reason for this is that the lack of an electrical system means that the ADS-B transmitter can't have a reliable source of power, after hearing about the accident at Winterhaven I'm increasingly of the mind that even planes like the Cub that don't have an electrical system should be required to have a battery-powered radio with a backup battery pack available. At the very least, they should have one if operating at or near an airport with a certain amount of traffic or greater. Even though my plane has two radios, I carry a backup portable radio just in case. I went with the PJ2 from Sporty's mainly because it has full-size GA headset jacks so no adapter is required, and it's dirt-simple to operate.

I completely agree. It's 2023, not the old days. Aircraft can be modified or at the very least things put into place like your suggestion of a battery powered radio. There is absolutely no justification to be operating in a busy airspace ill equipped. Again, I don't want to speculate but if all radio calls were being made, would I have had to talk about it in this podcast? Interesting thought.

There needs to be an FAA requirement for radios, and ideally adsb. The fact that radios aren't required everywhere makes me nervous to fly into uncontrolled airports. My parents live about 5 miles from the Winterhaven airport and I was planning on flying my plane there to visit them.. now I don't want to go anywhere near that airport since this accident.

I loved the insight into the ATR accident, especially since you are qualified in that aircraft. I personally think flying without a radio is completely irresponsible and should be illegal, especially since it endangers the lives of your fellow airmen. yes, many o older aircraft, lack electrical systems however, portable radios should be mandatory. There needs to be a change. Question: it seems you did most of your flying here in the US, I’m curious when I watch British or European KZbin videos, the pilots always use the abbreviation QNH. Do you know what this stands for? Or what are the other major differences you’ve noticed between US and British flying. Yes, I would love to see this podcast on Apple podcast Finally, funny story, I was listening to this in my car, driving through the hills of Vermont with my AirPods in when you cut to the sound of the British anthem and scared the heck out of me. I thought a truck or train was blasting its horn 😂

I own my own aircraft. Its amazing. However , now i have no money for instrument training. However , I can go fly in VFR anytime and I don't worry about someone else jacking up the plane before me.

with regards to winter haven.. i've had the same thing (people cutting you off etc) and it is now SOP that our school never goes there. the school has even complained to the FAA about it and they just get blown off.... now hopefully something has happened (unfortunately) the FAA will do something about the seaplane base and their unrelenting ignorance of the rules etc. I would hope that they also make them to have radios and make radio calls (unlikely but we can hope). so my question for this episode.... when you are flying for work, seeing as it's a turbo prop, do you count that as "turbine time"?

Ahh this is awesome, once the preliminary report came out I was meaning to write you in some comments again what your thoughts were and you answered all I was hoping you would and confirmed my intuition. As for the uncontrolled fields and nordo people, I just don't get, it's like they don't care if they die. And in the US you uave it easy with ADSB not like here in EU where we don't have that for most light planes. Fking criminal that there is no obligation to talk. Those two young guys dead cuase of some geezers stuck in their ways boils my blood too!

Thank you so much! It's such a shame that the midair happened. I agree that there should be something in place to make sure every aircraft can communicate. I don't want to speculate but this raises the question: would I be talking about this is both aircraft had radios? It's an interesting one.

I don't get why the FAA doesn't simply make it mandatory for radio calls in non-towered airports... It's really not a big deal to call out your position in a traffic pattern. Simply doing yourself the decency to put it out there so that someone can hear you and potential avoid mid-air collisions. At least make it mandatory in Class E airspace at 700ft (or to the surface class E) surrounding a Class G airport. I kind of get not needing radio calls in the middle of Montana on an airstrip that only has 2 planes on it... But at the end of the day, this is the 21st century, radios are probably the most inexpensive piece of equipment to purchase on an airplane nowadays.

Hey Lew, since you mentioned aircraft ownership, would love to see you do a video about the aircraft you would consider. Obviously all low wings 😉. Would a Sling TSI be considered?
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation Жыл бұрын
I'd be interested in anything affordable with the wings in the correct position. I'm not sure about kit planes but I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out. Other than a Cessna of course. I don't have a dock.

I believe ATP is pt 61? At least it was when I went through 9 years ago. Just looked it up and it says pt 61, just highly structured for a pt 61.

I've been corrected by a few people that ATP is part 61. They fooled me completely because from the outside they certainly market themselves as a part 141 equivalent.

I don't think ATP is 141 in the since you think. True 141 requires a 4 year degree in order to qualify for R-ATP. I did 141 with Liberty University and am way ahead of any part 61 CFI since I studied aviation for 4 years.

I fly into KGIF often, if you are flying without radios or ADSB you are criminal. Jack Brown just killed these two young pilots because they made the decision to operate without radios. Yes legal, but absolutely criminal hence the consequences.
