Now people will understand and close their jaws after it’s dropped after getting an estimate from an upholsterer. It takes years of skill and knowledge and it’s an art. I took a course on these traditional methods but we learned how to use tacks. It was very, very difficult and a ton of work and very, very time consuming. Thanks so much all the closeups of the little details … I learned so much!

So true. My father was in the business for over 40 years. I worked with him in his shop and people would gasp hearing the price for a re-upholstery job.

And this is why truly quality furniture is so expensive. The amount of time, detail and care that goes into making it. Fascinating!

So fascinating to watch. I tried this about 40 years ago but the teacher was very impatient. There were 5 of us students. I was the second to quit and sadly the rest followed soon after. He was very condescending especially to us 2 females. You make me want to get out my old tools and give it another try! Thanks.

Strangely enough, I also took upholstery classes about 40 years ago. In NJ, though. I was fortunate because my teacher was very patient and helpful, supplying tools (though some we had to buy), and doing extra bits that required sewing. You need a special heavy-duty sewing machine with that kind of fabric. I'm watching this now because I am thinking of doing a few of my old chairs-- one that I had just bought shortly after taking those classes. (I reupholstered 2 chairs during the class; then hired the instructor to do a couch that coordinated with it. He did a great job.)

@@marigeobrienHello, I am considering taking lessons and learn this so I can re upholster some old chairs I got from my grandmother. There are no springs just "stuffing" in them. Do you think this is a realistic idea or does it take years of practice before one start to get it right? Thank you very much!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am preparing to restore a mid-1800, extremely elaborate sofa that is literally falling to pieces. I need springs, webbing, fabric, wood repair, little wheels for the feet, everything! It must weigh at least 150 pounds. Has wood shavings, horsehair, etc. It was given to me for FREE because the owner didn't want to mess with it! It's gorgeous and I can't wait to restore it.

Great job 👍. I’m an upholsterer myself, we’re the last of a dying breed lol. The only advice I would give you is to cover your work table with some kind of fabric (not vinyl because the pieces you work on will stick to it) so you don’t scratch the show wood. I was getting nervous looking st the arms on the bare table 😂.

Inside my cushion I used used value village cushions( the ones that form to your head and stay cool) as well as the horse hair (it came with) I only added new materials and recovered my old chair with leather that came from a jacket my Mom bought me 20 years before she passed. Funny how everyone loves sitting in that old chair nice job just love watching someone work/. my fingers are still sore from caneing a wicker couch on wrought iron/ After paying me to fix it and she gave me all the materials to do the job she ended up backing out and said just keep it. I hadn't even started but it looks good in my yard. I feel very blessed watching You work

Wow. There is a crazy amount of work that goes into traditional upholstery. But I'm betting all the attention to detail really pays off in terms of making comfortable and durable furniture. Although it looks like at a number of points you elected to go with modern methods and materials. Staples, hot glue, and probably the type of padding used as well. Among other examples. Probably because these were legitimate improvements over what was done in the past. Either because of the time involved or because of improvements in tools or materials. Much like you use power tools to repair wood rather than the tools that were originally used to build the piece. But the end result is still very similar.

You always make everything look so easy, or at least a.ways in control, when you do this. Even when it's not. Like upholstery. I have trouble putting a slipcover on a chair. But I want to redo a favorite chair about like yours, and maybe if I watch this another 300 or so times I'll get brave and try it. So thanks again! YOUR chair looks beautiful! 😊
