Its also worth noting that the soldiers hannibal tried to ransom back to rome were sent to exile in sicily. It would be one of Hannibals biggest mistakes not executing those men as those several thousand exiled men were used as the core of Scipios african invasion army. And the only reason scipio wound up needing those men was because the replublic of rome thought made it illegal for scipio to use any standing roman forces for such a risky invasion.
