aTrippyFarmer and the crew are back to bring you more farming adventures. In this episode, Andy gets to enjoy the daily increase in fuel prices in his local area. Andy and Chris work on a project that has needed fixing for ages... A group of Pigeons has taken up residence inside of their biggest grain bin, and Andy has had enough of their antics. After scaling into the bin with all of his supplies, Andy goes to work on repairing the infrastructure that has allowed the birds to freely enter the grain bin. They certainly enjoy having free-reign on 40,000 bushels of corn. Andy tightens down the hatches within the bin, so this issue should be alleviated. Andy also explains his finger injury into detail. After that, Andy and Chris move onto another project that has been put off for too long. Andy, the soybean planter guy, accidentally broke off a tile-inlet cover last Spring, but the crew had not gotten around to fixing it. They make quick work of that issue. To end the video, Andy talks about the skyrocketing fuel prices and its effect on a farm's budget and decision-making. These added costs don't spell disaster for farmers, but that isn't to say that they won't influence the farming practices that people choose to use. The real issue is in the fertilizer market, but only time will tell on that subject. Thanks for watching!

Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

There is a lot of speculation about big acreage switches to soybeans due to high nitrogen prices. In productive areas, corn still pencils out easily, especially when you consider continuous cropping yield penalties. That being said, the more “fringe” acres are very likely to switch to soybeans. This whole ordeal is far from over, and this may be one of the more interesting springs we have had in this US. Our upcoming crop has massive implications on future market prices. If there are any considerable hiccups, grain prices could easily blow past previous records without much effort. I hope that things settle back to normal ranges quickly…

Like you said, “everyone likes to stick their hand in the cookie jar.” I keep hearing all this supply chain talk. Nobody likes to work anymore. All the basic talking points. Some of that might be true, but the Valentines’ aisle was stocked. The St. Paddy’s Day crap is stocked. The top 5 petroleum companies have record profits and that is after a pandemic, when people worked from home and drove less. This is price gouging at its finest...except they are the biggest donors, so the powers at be look the other way. Thanks for the video Trippy. Heal up. Grind harder. Cheers all

A men brother! It's a load of bullshit. We pay over $10 a gallon here in New Zealand, just to line governments and billionaires pockets. They are still buying 600million dollar apartments in New York that they don't even live in. Everybody needs to stop believing the news on TV. Do some homework and see the real truth to covid, so called war and so called supply chain problems.

There is a fascinating report done by Texas A&M (I think) about the price of fertilizer. The fertilizer producers are claiming natural gas is the biggest issue. The collegiate report basically says that the cost of production has not gone up even close to what the actual fertilizer price has. Nutrien's stock price just reached another all-time high. I agree with everything you are saying.

@@michaeldouglas1243 glyphosate has received a lot of negative press in the last few years. I know enough to know that I know very little, but it’s hard to safe whether or not it really is a carcinogen. Everyone wants to blame it for the world’s problems, yet they never stop to think about how over the same time period they have increasingly carried around a microwave device in their pocket and hands. I only say that for argument, not because I believe one or the other. Paraquat is another problematic one, which makes sense because one sip of it will literally kill you. When you are spraying that stuff, the air is filled with vapors, so you are guaranteed to be inhaling it. I just wish we had the tools to be able to definitely say what causes our problems. Our herbicide costs have gone up about 10-15% this year. We did make some changes to our herbicide plans and soybean genetics to avoid the costlier options. If not, some programs were going to have jumped 100% from last year. Regardless, crazy times we are living in!

Convenience, risk, and necessity. When everyone is harvesting a large corn crop, the local elevators get bogged way down. Our trucks were hitting a standstill trying to go to commercial storage, so our harvestores offered a great place to move grain while we harvested more corn.

For fun I calculated how many Farm AID concerts it would take just to cover the additional production costs for corn farmers this year. We all remember Farm AID right? These guys took the 1980s and managed to do even more damage to farmers. So at $200 increase y-y for corn per acre (good data from my farm and lots of confirmation) so around $18B to grow this crop compared to last year. Willy and the boys would need to sell out Darryl K Royal Stadium in Austin with 100,000 fans paying $100 per ticket every day for over 5 years straight. Think about that when the scavengers swoop in inevetibably to 'help' the farmers.

You are pretty spot-on with your numbers. I am not going to pretend that we will not have a substantially higher profit for our old crop and this new crop, but 2023 will be a tough year in my opinion. Some of these margin-farmers will be squeezed pretty thin unless Dec 23 corn starts running up quite a bit!

We have next to no control of farm-gate prices. I am not even remotely saying that we are victims of anything other than global market disruption, which is partially offset by the increased grain prices. These ridiculous prices do not support Ukraine at all. None of this money goes to them. They can’t even capitalize on high market prices because all of their ports are shut down or destroyed, fuel is limited, and they are under siege by Russia. Ukraine is entirely the victim here!

@@hfff1 the only revolution that could cull fertilizer prices is government intervention. Only a few major players control the nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium markets. Unless we are going to go takeover Nutrien, Mosaic, CF industries, and the Koch Brothers, we cannot enforce any change. We need nitrogen to grow corn. We need P and K for all of our crops. Those companies control it all. Nutrien owns 60% of the world’s entire supply of mineable potash after Agrium merged with Potash Corp.
