Attack on a HUGE convoy. Silent Hunter 5 - The Wolves of Steel Campaign Gameplay Part 1

Please excuse the black borders on the sides. I´m playing this in a 16:10 resolution and the editing adds the black borders to make it fit a 16:9 full screen.
This is an random encounter with a transatlantic convoy during my career, which I then proceed to attack.
The game is played with the amazing Wolves of Steel Mod that fixes most of the issues this game had and adds a ton of realistic features.

I just found this playlist a week ago. These videos are highly entertaining. Very good job. I could watch these all day, if I wouldn't have to work. It's so cool when the used techniques bear fruit. I know, that you have abandoned your SH 5 series, because you've lost your savegame... that's a pity, but if you would get back to it at some point - or maybe another title of the series, it would be christmas for some people. Well done, thanks for creating these videos.

Thank you, also have a look at my Cold Waters series! I will return to SH in the next few months (If I get everything to work well). But I´ll play a campaign in SH3 instead of SH5. Even though SH5 was much improved by TWOS, it is still full of bugs, glitches and bad AI. SH3 with Mods looks almost as nice and has better AI on Top of more features.

@@taucher1205 There are some things wrong with it. The destroyers can bug out and will stick to you like glue. Convois will sail on a straight course, even if they have been attacked by a submarine just an hour earlier. Planes are useless and will not engange once you are below the surface, etc.

Great video and thanks for keeping the sim alive. -SH IV trick I use - Since all the ships in a convoy move at the same speed you can gauge speed off of any of them, not just your target. Good luck and Good Hunting!

Yeah, I am already doing that. The Microphone produces a lot of background noise so I can not turn it up too much. I'll be testing some better Hardware soon

Love your vids, i just got to happy times in my first playthrough and was wondering something about patrols. Do you mainly wait to find convoys or do you ever bother checking out lone ship contacts you come across. So far ive been ignoring them hoping to find big tonnage if im lucky to intercept a convoy

I think so, but I didn't want to test that theory with all those destroyers around :D

Yess...you...can. But you can't go deep (less than 100m) as the sonar operator can then differentiate. It's a great tactic if you want a close engagement (under 1500m) as destroyers can't depth charge you while avoiding merchants. Once inside and done with shooting torps, I just run silent, dive below the thermal plane and let the convoy roll over and past. Then, reengage further up the line.

​@@mathewm7136i need to test this, I've been trying to silent run at slow speed thru the convoy and I always get found and attacked by 3 or 4 destroyers. I pulled it off once before but now I'm in 1941 and finding attacking convoys much more difficult.

ever thought of killing the destroyers 1 by 1 slowly and then deck-gunning ALL the freighter down? its really really rewarding, i did that once a long time ago when i was really into this game. had a smaller convoy and in the end i ran out of all ammunition, only 1 freighter survived. bloody rampage. i was using manual targeting then. ps: it was sh3 +some mods, not sh5 though.

Targeting the destroyers is usually a waste of Torpedoes. Also most of the merchants are armed. You are not going to win a gunfight

@@Tonci87 can be done at the early stage of the war, when barely any of the freighter are armed. its not really a waste if it means u can make use of all your deck gun shells. and erm.. be more aggressive :D

One time I blew the ballast tanks and took a destroyer out that was about start depth charging me. It was ballsy and so lucky with the stern torpedo. It was really close too. I was so pissed off I then used my deck gun on the remaining convoy when I realised the destroyer I took out was the only ship protecting the convoy. I felt like a God when I was done. I could have used my torpedos, but you know those are expensive.

You should check out uboat on steam. it’s early access but it’s really good and there’s some nice mods for it too. I absolutely loved your three parter on the convoy attack. Her kerloin du hast ein grosse svanze to go in to that 3 times I felt like I watching das boot!

@@MajorHyman I did not try UBoat yet. From What I have seen it still needs a lot of patches to be finished. It also still looks to be a bit on the casual side. However, I believe that UBoat has great potential. It will be very interesting to see if there are any major realism overhaul mods, after the game has been released.

Awesome video sir. Thank you. however I did not undertand at 22:47 you are saying that they are presenting 12 and a half on the scale regarding to finding their AOB. Does not the ship presenting on linear scope element 18,5. so aob is not like 30s but more like 48degree? Can you please clearify this. I watched most of your videos and whole others regarding usign RAOBF and Attackdisk but that part confused me. Thank in advance dear Sir

Something is unclear to to me here . Why didnt you calulcate bearing and speed for target no 2 and no 3, ? How did you know range to targets? and finally how did you know when exactly fire torpedoes to targets?

Since the ships are sailing in convoy their speed and course will be the same, I therefore didn't need to calculate those for targets 2 and 3. I messed up the attack a little bit because I dindn't manage to turn into a 90° position on time. So I decided to fire while I still had their broadsides to shoot at. The range to target was estimated

@@Tonci87 Got it. One more thing because Im not sure if I understood whole "process" correctly. How did you know when to shoot? Firing to early will lead to torpedo miss bow of target and to late will also miss the ship. ( this maybe obvious to you but I think I missing something here) .

@@pawe4917 When I am at a 90° angle to my targets course (AOB 90° at 0° scope bearing), and I know the speed, then I will turn my periscope until the Gyroangle (the two big dials at the buttom of the TDC) is 0°. When the target passes through the crosshair, I fire.

@@pawe4917 I had the same problem and it took me 2 whole days to figure it out (although it is super obvious once you know it). The gyro angle tells you when you need too shoot your torpedo. Basically a gyro angle of 0 means your torpedo can travel straight ahead (at 0 degrees bearing) and it will hit your target (if you calculated everything right). A gyro angle of 5 means your torpedo needs to do a 5 degree turn to hit your target. So lets say your target is at 40 degree bearing, you calculate everything you need and then you check at which degree bearing your gyro angle is 0, lets just say its at 10 degrees bearing. This means if you shoot once your target passes 10 degrees bearing, your torpedo can fly straight on and will hit your target. So if your target is traveling from left to right you want always turn your boat so its on your left side (and vice versa), otherwhise you wont be able to aim in front of it. The perfekt solution is of course to turn exactly to a 90 degree angle to your targets course, because this way you will have the full broadside to hit. But it also works with other angles, you just need to calculate more precisely:).

The TDC mod is included in the Wolves of Steel Mod. You do not need to install it

Thats why i dont like G7e torpedo. Its very unreliable. Not mk14 level, but close enough.

The T3 is of course much better, but even in the early years of the war, the G7e not producing a bubble trail is a huge deal.
