It occurred to me watching this: It was probably a lot easier to digest via the manga, because you can read and re-read at your own pace. On TV, you get a massive exposition dump within the span of a few minutes, and if you were watching it live, depending on your circumstances, you might not have been able to pause and rewind, or even rewatch the episode afterwards. ''That Day'' was an episode that totally changed how I see this show. I don't know why, but for me, THIS was THE episode. All the confusion of yours this episode brought is making me smile like oh boy, the real show starts now ''Are we watching the same show?'' - Yes but actually no I guess?
@thesyndrome432 жыл бұрын
that's intentional I think, because from this point forward the genre of the show basically changes, the information that was gained has completely recontextualised EVERYTHING we thought we knew: the titans are not some horrible monster, they are Eldians trapped in a state they cannot control, so all the titans we have been killing until now have been PEOPLE that maybe could have been turned back to normal in some way, and all the "fuck yeah!" moments we had of titan deaths in earlier seasons is suddenly extremely grim in hindsight because we cheered for innocent people to suffer horrible deaths for things they couldn't control. On top of this, we are all Eldians and have been all along, we ARE the titans because of some strange hereditary trait that we don't fully understand humanity is not dead, they exist on a mainland in a much more scientifically advanced society while we have actually been on an island for the entire time without knowing, and not only that but the rest of humanity HATES your people for things that your ancestors did and you had no input in and are gearing up to fully invade you for resources Nothing could ever be the same after learning all of that, the world just got bigger and brought a whole bunch of new problems with it

Hahahaha, I like Anna's question at the end, because I remember that the first time I watched these episodes, I was annoyed that Eren suddenly got these memories, because it seemed like it made acquriring the basement journals -- the show's most notorious McGuffin -- completely redundant and pointless; like if they had just waited long enough, Eren would have just gained this knowledge on his own through Grisha's memories. Of course now I realize that it was probably Eren touching and/or reading the journals that triggered the memories in the first place.

@masrfaker2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no, that was one big BS. They didn't try to analyze in detail the Smiling Titan and here out of the blue Ben says "is Eren's mom gonna eat Eren's mom?" I'm not buying it. FilmBuff was able to predict it only because he analysed creepy sequence of 03x12. It is the biggest reach you can say, that Dina was the one who ate Carla, when you never even considered Smiling Titan to be someone important. (I just re-watched their reactions of 02x12 and 02x01, they are as clueless and always miss the point as I remember them to be). Same with how they 'figured out' the thing with elf ears. They didn't even notice it when Zeke was walking around in S2, but then they immediately 'drew connection' between ears in S3P2. Yeah, they surely remembered this little detail that was briefly shown in S1, primarily in S1P1. I'm totally convinced. And it sounded soo fake. Ben really tried to act, but ultimately failed. Seems to me that at certain point of time they got spoiled some things of the show and now they are trying to act cool, like they are seeing it for the first time.

Non-spoiler clarifications 1. The S2 outro scene of titans emerging from the sea and attacking a walled city is the Eldian Empire during its historical peak conquering rival nations by weaponizing titans, which only their race had the ability to do. 2. The entirety of this Japanese anime as you've known it up to this episode occurred on the island of Paradis, where the descendants of the Eldians that the King who lost the Great Titan War "80 years go" (from child Grisha's timeline) took his people and erected three walls to both keep Eldians in and Marleyans out. For a fresh new beginning, the king used his titan powers to erase these wall refugees' memories and gaslighted them that all human race perished except those now inside the walls. A century of ignorant living followed, leading up to child Eren's timeline. 3. But some Eldians did not journey with that king and were left stranded on the continent, to be revenge-persecuted by the victorious Marleyans. Dina Fritz descended from a royal relative to stayed behind, as did Grisha (descended from Eldian commoners). These stranded Eldians live in impoverished walled ghettos on the continent, despised by today's Marleyans. 4. The details don't matter now, but Marley won the great war by taking possession of 7 of 9 titans formerly owned by Eldia. And you guys are right; only Eldian blood can become a smart 9 titan, so Marley needs the help of Eldian "traitors" like Zeke to keep ownership of the 7. 5. Doing the math, the two titans not in Marley's control are 1) founding titan, since it's passed on from wall king to wall king to Frieda Reiss to Grisha who stole it to give to Eren. 2. The "buff" titan as owned by the Owl who gave it to Grisha who gave it to Eren. So Eren possesses all titans not currently under Marley influence. Oh, sorry, Armin has colossal and lesbian Ymir temporarily possessed that ugly gremlin titan of her's (but she gave it back to Marley). Reiner, Annie, et al. are present day "Eldian traitors" and owners of some of the 7/9 who fight for Marley. 6. Now we can look back on previous seasons and understand why inside-the-walls adult Grisha was after the Founder as well as Reiner's crew, the latter who like to refer to the Founder as "the coordinate." 7. The wall by the beach where Dina was titanized is the shoreline of Paradis island. Marley takes their Eldian prisoners on a boat there to titanize them and make them a nuisance for the Eldians inside the walls. It's cruel trolling but also makes it so that wall Eldians don't venture out and think about returning to the continent again. When owl tells child Grisha that rule breakers are "taken to Paradise", that's what he meant.

Anna & Ben, idk if you brought this up but does it now make more sense in S2 when Ymir & Reiner were holed up at that abandoned castle and Ymir found some old tinned herring where the can was written in a weird language but her knowing it was herring meant she could read it, which shocked Reiner because he could secretly read it too but was surprised Ymir also could (wall Eldians shouldn't be able to as it was written in Ancient Eldian) and knew then that Ymir must've come from the mainland just like him. Ancient Eldian is a writing system spread throughout the mainland during the centuries that Eldia dominated other nations, so it became a defacto system adopted by Marley as well. Mainlanders; both Eldian and Marleyan, are able to read it but the Eldians of Paradis island can't. Also, realize herring comes from the ocean, not freshwater rivers or lakes. There are no oceans inside the walls. Those cans were abandoned there by a people from off the island.

Glad to see you guys have made it this far. This channel is definitely one of my favorite reactor channels just by how analytical and clever you all are. Its been a great ride but the tutorial stage of AOT is now over. Get ready for the REAL show :p

I don’t remember whether or not the map is shown again so I don’t know if this is a SPOILER or not but… Attack on Titan’s world is ours but flipped upside down. Paradis is Madagascar.

If I'm correct, I believe the map of AOT is a map of earth, upside down. With the island of Paradise being Madagascar and the mainland being africa

The titan that eats the marleyan guy at the end is the same titan that eats the girl name "Mina" in episode 5 from Eren's crew after he pulls her gear's wire.

Here’s a summary of the key points, no spoilers so feel free to read all of it! - 1820 years ago, a girl named Ymir Fritz made a contract with the devil to receive the power of the Titans. When she died, her soul split into 9 separate Titans who built the Eldian Empire. - They used that power to conquer a nation called Marley & other countries. The Eldians almost drove other races to extinction. This lasted for 1700 years until the Great Titan War. - The war began when 145th king of Eldians, King Fritz inherited the Founding Titan & failed to use its power to maintain peace. During this period, Marley somehow captured 7 of the 9 Titan powers 80 years ago, ensuring their victory. - Most of the remaining Eldians retreated to the island of Paradis, led by King Fritz. There they built *3 surrounding walls for protection*. As you can guess this is where Eren and the gang have been the entire time. That's why the Titans outside of the walls couldn't "wipe out" humanity since they're all stuck on an island, and Marley and the rest are safe because of that. -When the King Fled to the island, A group of Eldians were left behind in Marley & lived as second-class citizens due to their ancestors, these second-class citizens are people such as Grisha and his parents. - The ‘Eldian Restoration Movement’ has an informant in the Marley government called ‘The Owl’, who has been leading the group from the shadows. - He supplies documents that supposedly refute Marley’s version of history. According to Grisha, Ymir Fritz used the power of the Titans to cultivate the land & bring wealth to the people of the world, not genocide & enslavement. - The Owl also sends a woman named Dina Fritz, who is the last remaining descendant of the royal family. She eventually marries Grisha & *they have a son named Zeke*, whom Grisha believes is the chosen one due to his royal blood. - The Marley government claims that King Fritz will soon declare war & they plan to recruit select Eldian children to inherit the 7 Titan powers that they possess to become "Warriors". Since only Eldians can turn into Titans, no other race can turn into Titans including Marleyans so they have no choice but to recruit Eldian children(Childrens tend to be more obedient). The recruits will also be considered ‘honorary Marleyans’. The Owl informs the Eldian restorationists that this is a cover for Marley to attack Paradis for its resources. - They also learn that Marley has not attacked Paradis in the past because King Fritz had threatened to release millions of Titans from the walls if provoked. - The Founding Titan that was taken to Paradis is crucial to the revivial of Eldia & since their goals line up with Marley i.e. infiltrate the walls & capture the Founding Titan, Grisha enlists his son as a Marley soldier. - Zeke eventually betrays his parents & the Eldian Restorationists to the Marley government & they’re all sent to "Paradise" to roam the island of Paradis as mindless Titans forever. These same Mindless Titans also became a problem later for people within the walls since The Colossal and Armored Titan breached it. Everything else is pretty self-explanatory. Some of these points might be obvious as well but there are others who might be overwhelmed by this massive infodump (like myself in the past). I hope this summary simplifies the exposition & answers any questions that you may have. Not only is this a lot to process, it’s also extremely important as it now changes the entire scope of the story.

After the Great Titan War there was seven titans on Marleys control and the two that were not on Marleys side were the founding titan (which was inside the King on paradis island) and the one that was in Kruger, then Grisha and end in Eren

The titan that ate the evil Marley Officer at the end shows up in S1E05, and S1E08. First he pulls on the ziplines of the black haired girl from Eren and Armin's squad before Eren loses his leg and arm. Later on he shows up in the refueling room when they needed to kill the 7 small titans around the elevator; Sasha fails to kill him and then Mikasa saves her by killing him. @AutoSave

Grisha’s comrades ate Eren’s squad in episode 5. The one that is currently preying on the evil Marleyan officer is the one that ate Mina Carolina (the girl who’s grapple line gets pulled by the titan).
