This one scene easily cements my love for Bertholdt's character. We see him struggle under the sheer weight of his situation in Season 2, with his past actions finally catching up to him, as he was completely torn as to where his allegiances laid. While he was critical of Reiner's friendliness towards the Paradis Inhabitants, he himself still grew bonds with his faux-comrades. He doesn't want to hurt them more than he already has, and regrets it all, wanting to live out a simpler life where he can stand with them. At the same time, he also wants to save Annie, which puts him in opposition with them. Even if he wanted to betray Marley, his ill father would pay the price for it. He was completely and utterly trapped, and cried out for someone to "find him". But after he's had time to reflect on his situation, Bertholdt realizes that even if he wasn't the one to break the wall, other warriors like him would bear the burden instead. In that one scene in Season 3, Bertholdt accepts the futility, tragedy, and pointlessness of his situation, all before transforming one last time. Because the world was *just that cruel*

What I love about this moment is that, we witness the product of a character's resolve being strengthened. When this theme first played, Berthold was unsure of what was to be done. The second time, Berthold not only did what he could to minimize damage to Reiner but, also confronted Armin and Mikasa while verbally stating what he intended to do. If I remember correctly, Berthold was very quiet. It's great to watch an anime character steel themselves and make immense moves that show how much they've grown ("grown" in Reiner and Berthold's case).

Berthold’s a very interesting character in how he is basically the representative of the titans. Probably the first Titan people think of is the Colossal. Yet he was always the most quiet and reserved one. He limited himself as a person, as hinted at by Shadis and his position as number three in the 104th. Now, he has strengthened his will because he has a mission and he is determined to see it through for the people he loves.

I’ve been in this fandom for a minute, and only recently have I taken time to appreciate Bertholdt’s character. I’ve always related myself to Reiner, strong and reliable on the outside, yet with his own struggles on the inside, and while that may be true- I didn't realize how much I also related to Bertholdt. The thing with Bertholdt is that he never hated anyone, he never felt any ill will against any of the island devils. He just wanted to do the best he could for his father, to make sure he got proper health care. At some point, he realized that there was nothing he could do about his position in the world. There was no chance at reasoning or negotiating like Armin hoped for. The world was decided already, and Bertholdt came to terms with it and played his part.

For a character that's overall very docile and goes along with what people tell him, Bertoldt sure is an unexpected badass when it comes down to it, he was in 3rd place when it came to the Regiment Training even ranking above Annie (who was amazing at close quarters) and Eren (who arguably tried harder than him and had more skill with 3DMG). Plus the presentation here is fucking amazing, the remix of XL:TT and YOUSEEBIGGIRL with the added heavy metal strings and drums is amazing with mixed male and female lyrics, him ascending into the middle of the district above all buildings and above the Hange squad, signaling that the staple enemy of the series so far is now on the offensive instead of being in a supportive role, effectively saying that this is the (literal) largest obstacle that has ever stood in humanities way.
