I can't say anything different from the other comments; this was mesmerizing and spectacular. I can't stop rewatching it. I really don't think anime apologists for this scene understood the gravity and profundity of it. We've never seen our protagonist of 3 seasons, Eren Jaeger, murder innocent civilians before. The concept of human life in the AoT universe is consistently given the due weight it deserves. And when Eren gestures his bloodied & lacerated hand to Reiner, it seems to be just a threat & only a threat. The viewer opines that Eren is simply using strongarm tactics, with no intent to voluntarily act on them without provocation. Our protagonist throughout his conversation with Reiner showcases immense maturity, levelheadedness, and empathy. Clearly, he grew up. And when he helps Reiner up, you simply do not expect what comes next; Eren's transformation. He DOES do it. He DOES transform! Within proximity of civilians, children, Reiner, and even Falco (whom he had become fond of). It's so unexpected, it's so momentous, this scene. It blew up forums and KZbin when the chapter (100) was released. For this reason, the entire fanbase expected this to be on the level of the Reiner & Bertholdt reveal, perhaps even SURPASSING it. None of that happened, unfortunately. The pacing of the entire episode wasn't up to par, the animation in certain areas seemed inferior to the manga (e.g., Eren's face), the OST choice was poor (no, it needn't have been YOUSEEBIGGIRL, but something of equivalent "oomph" if you will). They even removed the panel from the manga that indicates, mid-transformation of the Attack Titan, the civilians and children joyfully watching the speech from the window of the complex (right before they're summarily killed via Eren). So on and so forth. A lot of us expect the studio to not only MATCH the manga, but TRANSCEND it, because the manga is ALREADY written and drawn. Alas, MAPPA was given a horrible ~8-month timeline to animate AoT. Yes, yes, I agree what they've produced is a miracle given the time constraints. But the final product has undoubtedly fallen somewhat below expectations, high as they may have been. Here's hoping to the 2nd half of this final season that'll hopefully provide the animators with more time to animate and direct appropriately.

another thing that was missing that when during Willie’s speech, you can see Eren’s face in the manga shift. It was as if he was still trying to make sense of it all, maybe find a way out of it. But when Willie called all of his friends and family demons, Eren closes his eye and you can see that he made his choice.

I really hate Kodansha for doing this. If only they didn't give Wit that shitty deadline they wouldn't dropped aot in the first place. Or even if they did, when Mappa wanted more time to animate they should have agreed and given them atleast 1 and a half year... I just hope the second part of this season can get the time it needs, hopefully around 1.5 or 2 years, but I highly doubt:(

I agree with most of what you have to say, but to say that the episode's pacing wasn't up to par is just BS. The pacing was pitch perfect. Throughout the entire episode, the tension just kept on building, getting stronger and stronger without ever losing it, and it all climaxed at just the right moment.

One of the things I really like in this version is the emphases on Eren hitting down on Willy. That was really hard to make out in the show. The far away shot of the building with lightning is also a very cool addition.

A few thing you definitely did better was when Eren was about to transform, you saw the attack titan flash his face like Bert and Reiner in season 2, the zoom out from Willy to Eren, the different angles of Eren emerging from the building, and the intensity of his high five to Willy. 👌

I see all these comments about how incredible this scene is compared to the anime, but I want to talk about the sound design. It is I N C R E D I B L E. I’m no expert on sound design and how it’s made, but the roars from Eren, the crash as he slams his fist into the stage, it’s amazing. His roars are my personal favorite. They’re a step up from the already cool roars from the anime. They make Eren sound actually scary. The normal roars are loud and mad sounding, but these roars make Eren feel large, imposing, and straight up terrifying. The almost have this echo to them which makes them boom. It’s flawless imo.

However, I strongly believe that if they chose to adapt season 4, this is what the animation direction would have looked like. I can see that this scene is heavily inspired by the direction of Tetsurou Araki (the director of previous seasons + death note) and the animation direction of Masashi Koizuka. This scene is heavily inspired by their direction style. With season 4, the studio has changed, as well as the director, resulting in a change of style.

El problema que veo es que crees que porque wit studios tiene buenos directores y animadores, siguen siendo capaces de brindar productos cuidados y mantener la serie como la tenian antes, pero el mismo wit ya demostro lo contrario en la temporada 3, en la segunda temporada tuvieron 4 años de produccion para 12 capitulos, en la tercera tuvieron al rededor de 2 años y ya se estaban notando los problemas en la produccion, toda su primera parte (sus 12 primeros capitulos) son muy buenos, pero de ahi en adelante hay un tremendo bajon de calidad en todo aspecto, la revancha de reiner y eren fue muy mala, no estuvo a la altura de su primera pelea y los titanes se sentian sumamente toscos y lentos, el cgi del titan colosal de berthold fue el peor cgi de la serie y en general carecia de detalles por todos lados, ahora si ya hubo un gran bajon de calidad en la tercera temporada, imaginate la calidad tan mala que darian si animaran una temporada entera en 7 o 8 meses, por mucho que tengan buenos animadores o directores, tener poco tiempo de produccion tambien implica tener una mala organizacion y tomar decisiones apresuradas, mappa habra tenido si quiera 2 semanas para 1 capitulo, a esto sumale que tienen el doble de trabajadores que wit studios y ademas los sobreexplotan, y aun asi el producto no sale a la altura, que te hace pensar que wit studios daria algo mejor cuando ni mappa pudo llegar a dar algo a la altura? Wit daria un resultado aun peor que el de mappa en sus mismas condiciones, y esto no es ser un fanboy de mappa ni nada, pero esto mas bien prueba que el estudio es irrelevante, cualquier estudio daria un resultado mediocre en las mismas condiciones.

Should the anime been like this, it would have broken the Internet. This scene alone would have made the episode one of the memorable anime episode ever. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Mappa, they did an incredible job with the time constraints they had. But we're talking legacy here. SnK is a classic in the making, it's a show people will still be talking about in 20 years. Unfortunately its potential is being wasted away. The anime is excellent, but it's not as good as it could have been, which is a shame to say about SnK. Wit set the bar really high and never disappointed, in fact they repeatedly exceeded expectations. This scene deserved the same treatment.

Honestly, we were robbed. The limited production time isn't an excuse because I and many others were more than willing to wait longer for the final season if it meant higher quality. Releasing it earlier was MAPPA's decision so the blame still falls on them. Bullying is too far, and I feel as if it's being used as a scapegoat. For some reason MAPPA's poor adaptation can't be discussed because people are being bullied/time constraints or whatever other excuse/outside influence that has nothing to do with the actual quality of the work itself. It's bad, whatever reason for that happening doesn't change the fact that it's still bad. Disappointment is justified regardless of any circumstance, because it's bad. "Well you're just ungrateful/privileged/etc, etc", I hate to use the word, but that's such a cucked way of looking at the world. There's other, masterpiece stories and forms of entertainment in the world, our bars are set high and that's completely fine, Authors should strive to create that kind of work and we should always be asking for more. Experiencing and scouting after more and more quality works is life enriching. Feeling as if you don't deserve to experience those things, or you feel privileged for asking for too much is cuckoldry. AoT will reach masterpiece status regardless (because the majority's bar is set so low) but it could have been way greater, the adaptation that would have gone down in history will never come to be, why? MAPPA wanted to release the anime a year sooner. I've yet to see an argument for MAPPA's adaptation that isn't time constraints, directors bullying, we should be grateful (we're privileged after all), because that's all nonsense, take those away and we're left with a lukewarm adaptation. If you truly like MAPPA's adaptation, people questioning the quality shouldn't get any sort of rise out of you, it just makes you seem like deep down your being let down yourself but don't want to admit it. You feel the need to defend AoT because you don't want to feel disappointment and other people bringing up flaws will ruin it for you, you mustn't like AoT all that much if your love for the show is so fragile. Anyway I think that basically covers everything, except "wall of text, lol" fucking deal with it.

do you really think an animation studio decides when an anime should get released? the client decides this, and the client for this is kodansha, the house who publishes aot manga. they wanted the anime first part to start before 2021 so it would end around the same time as the manga, to maximise the earnings. if you want to blame someone, blame them, not mappa.

@@sirsmoothable If you look closely, these scenes copied the movements of Mappa's "declaration of war" chapter and then in the transformation copy the same flashes from when Eren transformed into season 3 part 2 the first episode. He also copied the animation from when Eren Transforms to fight Annie in the first season. Nothing was really made from scratch by the fan and that's fine, no problem with that, but here people insist on glorifying this and saying "even a fan does a better mappa job." When the only thing it does is copy scenes that already exist and join them, unlike Mappa, which must draw without copying the WIT style, with other camera plans, with other character designs etc. Something that few fan animators do.
