I have always felt it's a good self preservation plan to have an old sledge hammer handle with me because you can hit a cow as hard as you want and as long as it isn't their eye, ear, nose or mouth they are just going to look at you wondering if that's all you got but it usually makes them back off. It isn't worth getting kicked or stomped over.

She was 99% bluff, but we did sell her. She calved last summer (about 6 weeks later than the rest of our cows). She was part of an entire small herd that we bought and they left the bull in year round.

@@geedavia1785 we like to get them tagged as soon as we can. If they are more than a couple of days old, we generally can’t get our hands on them out in the pasture. We also don’t like to gather them in pens unless we have to (stressful and little ones can get trampled). This mama provided a much more dramatic response than we typically get (which is why the video made it to the internet!). Identification for each animal is critical for or record keeping.

Why don't you just put collars on them with the tag on it. You don't have to put a hole in their ears at all. Hell, a microchip would be less invasive.

Good question. That would be a hazard as the stick their heads in all sorts of places that they shouldn’t. A collar that would be tough enough not to break away or tight enough not to slip off would create a real hazard for them getting hung and/or choked. A microchip still wouldn’t allow for quick identification (current technology would mean having to have a scanner within a few inches of the chip) from a distance and costs would be an issue. This is a very quick and humane process. The cow was simply being protective as she doesn’t know what our intentions are.
