As a very mid sewist myself I would like offer some advice if you're open to it feel free to read on. I love chaos but unfortunately chaos and sewing doesn't always mix :( when they say you should make mock ups they are right. But my tip as a chaotic sewist is to make wearable mock ups. So start with fabric that's not as special and a make a mock up you could even wear before using nice fabric. Another tip, scraps are worth their weight in gold. My mom gave me scraps and I use them all the time for things like: trying out the stitches I'm about to use on my project, trying a new technique, or covering other fabric to iron it. Don't be afraid of seam ripping and trying again if it's something that will bother you, I find so many time I'm like eh it's fine and then 3 steps later I'm like "whyyyyyy didn't I just fix that in the first place!!!!!" so always be willing to rip it out and try again. My last tip is binging sew alongs of people who draft their own patterns, or modify patterns. I have learn so much information passively through this (thanks closet historian). Good luck on your sewing journey, your pieces look great for your skill level! Oh one last thing, don't sew when you're tired. Unless you want to fix all the mistakes the next day.

ughh! Yeh, when I started sewing, I was like "I don't need to do all this stupid fiddly BS!".....now look at her, she pre-washes fabric, she irons like she's being paid, and spends time working on being fiddly. >_

I loved this video! Eventually you’ll find that cotton made for clothes is a bit different than quilting cotton & has better drape but I wish the pattern selection for those at Joann was more fun like the QC

i JUST found and finished watching your puppet video and immediately saw that you posted this! i’ve been sewing for 9 years (mainly backpacks and plush), and i think you are doing an awesome job!! there’s so many different aspects to sewing (garments, costuming, plush, backpacks, upholstery, etc.) that it can really keep you busy and there’s always something new to learn. kudos to you for being so enthusiastic about getting back into it and just Doing it, those shorts are AWESOME. and the dress is beautiful, is the problem that the elastic is fraying and detaching?? :0 also i use bias tape All The Time and i never think to measure the edge i’m working with, i just buy more than i think i need and end up with excess because i don’t want to keep showing up at joanns just for bias tape 😭 (also that sponsorship. so glad you’ve found out about Puppet Nerd. i can’t wait to see where you go in your puppet journey)

THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT!!! yes the elastic is fraying i think :( any suggestions??

@@mrsmoonheaven one thing you could try for a strong connection with straps is to sew a little box with an “X” in the middle from corner-to-corner, it makes it much more sturdy and less likely to fray since it’s able to hold more of the fibers in place! If you’re using 1 line of a straight stitch, it might also be because stretchy fabrics do better with a zig-zag stitch (for simple attachment, the “x” box is probably better for something you intend to hold up to some wear). also, if you haven’t done so already, you should open up your machine manual (or find it online or whatever) and just go through what all the default stitches do on some scraps or test pieces! You never know what cool or helpful stitch is literally Right there unless you try them :)

Just a tip that I just figured out…use heavy weight packing tape for putting patterns together….get at grocery store…cheaper and much easier to stick on and overs faster…

If I remember correctly what prompted this urge was during the making of Lil Ms J. There was something you were supposed to sew that you reluctantly did even though it was a pretty messy job. 😊 👏 You are doing fantastic girl! Isn't it fun to be able to have clothes that no one else has because you made them yourself?!?

I think a cute video idea is if you went to thrift stores to look for fabric! I like look through the curtains and sometimes the sheets, and bedding have good fabric :) and if you see an item of clothes you like, you could take it apart to use as a pattern. Prob better to get a size up and take measurements
