Attempting to Repair and Restore a Nintendo DS Lite I Purchased on EBAY!

I bought a Nintendo DS Lite off Ebay for £4.20. I wanted to see if we could first of all get it working with my very BASIC knowledge of repairs, and then restore it back to what it once was! I've never dipped into retro brightening before, which could of been useful on the R and L buttons. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to repairing and restoring, so apologies if there's something I didn't do correctly, but we learn :D Thanks for watching!

The ones I've ordered recently are mostly the same to be honest! I think it's where people just forget about them and leave them in bad storage conditions. No idea why there was ear wax in the volume slider though 😂 thanks for watching :)

my ds was really close to this gross grubbyness when i bought it 😭 these ones with the clearish casing are SO bad when it comes to sweat buildup and dead skin. absolutely gross. i cleaned mine and it looked so much better.

I have that same Japanese Ice Blue DS Lite and I picked it up for $70 and it looks almost brand new and the inside is flawless.

It looks very good again. For yellowing plastic there are some solutions. Elliot from TRF makes one of them. I believe it's calles retrobriting.

Did you try to change the two SMD fuses and the filter? If there was water damage there is a highly chance of having a short and getting those fuses blown.

Boy, that was very corroded! However, just asking, have you checked the fuses of the board? I mean, if one of them failed, even if it's crazy, replacing it can make the board boot! Unless(wich is very likely) the liquid got under the cpu (wich is a bga chip under the cart slot) and eat it away, in that case, ofc it's not fixable

I've seen someone use white distilled vinegar instead of iPa to clean corrosion off a gba motherboard, it seemed to get a lot of it off

@mrxpexplorer6318 so clean the motherboard after you use the vinegar... don't let it sit on the board for years. You use the vinegar, Get the corrosion cleaned up, then go over everything with iPa to clean it up.

Joey, i know this is an old video, and i know you've learned a ton since... but pick up some Brasso. Its phenomenal for cleaning motherboards and games. I use it on cartridge games snd handheld consoles. Excellent stuff.

question: my ds lite is 14 years old, i used it last year and it worked just fine, i was trying to use it today, the light came on for about 3 seconds, the bottom screen flashed the white screen for half a second and turned off, not sure if the battery is low or what, someone please explain

answering you in case anyone else wants to know as well. Charge the battery for a couple of hours and try again when the battery light goes green. If it didnt turn green then you'll most likely need a new battery. (I have one that I've never had to replace the battery in and it still charges fine.) If you turn it on after that and the bottom screen flashes and turns off then it's generally a problem with the top screen. Suspect the top screen esp if you've broken the hinges which is really easy to do.

It's called "ultrassonic cleaner" and it often even is enough to actually get the device working again, because it gets the dirt in the tightest of places of a motherboard, where a toothbrush can't reach.

You could try putting the yellowed plastic bits in a hydrogen peroxide bath lite by UV lights to remove the yellowing. Otherwise, great attempt, water damage is terrifying to repair. >.

1) Try a mix of 80% ipa and 20 % water for cleaning . It is something that Paul Danniels uses and works ( i unsubed from him when i realised he was just using people ) but it seems to work where ipa on its own does not "Deoxit for corroded parts like switches

Ewww, that was super filthy inside and out, could be a nice shell to use, if you collect enough bits of shell you could make a multi colour DS with every bit different.
