Running cinnamon desk top with LM Edge edition. Stable, fast and smooth. No complaints and good for a Linux newbie like me.

Shouldn't need Edge as of LM 22, it now has the 6.8 Kernel series.

@@pantarei. Not sure what the Debian Edition would have to do with the Edge version of LM 20 or 21. LMDE is at 6, and there is no Edge listed. Though I am sure nVidia probably isn't a good match with LMDE.

Xfce for me. Stable, quick and customizable. But on MX.
I've been using Cinnamon for a number of years now. I dual boot it on my main desktop and use it on my old Celeron laptop.

Linux Mint Cinnamon on Edge. Newer hardware; no sense in not trying it first. Newer Linux kernel. so, as long as it works, no sense in sticking with the older kernel

Its kinda funny when you say Mate is for people with limited system resources meanwhile its taking up 1.1 GB doing nothing...lol Anyone remember a few short years ago when XFCE would use about 300 MB of RAM?

Very good overview. Although, you might have mentioned that the easy way to try all the options before you make your choice is to use live versions booted from USB. When you decide which one you like, you can install from the USB drive. There are a number of good tutorials showing how to make them.

As long as you are not good in terminal and you use nvida gpu, LMDE is not good choice, because it comes without driver manager. Cinnamon is something very basic these days and I would not even try to go for Mate or XFCE as they look very old out of the box. Plasma 6 is something I wish to see in Mint, but that's not going to happen.

@@pantarei. Mate and xfce only look old by default. They follow the classical desktop philosophy and you can customise them to look more modern. I like KDE as well but it's buggy, especially after KDE 6 was released.

I've used and enjoyed Cinnamon for the past couple of years, but if it disappeared tomorrow I would be almost as happy with XFCE, which I've used in the past. Both are sufficiently customizable to create a pleasant and efficient experience.

My only problem with Mint is the old packages. Since it's based on Ubuntu LTS, by the time a new release will come the packages will lag 2 years behind, which is basically almost the same as running Debian stable.

@@Stevos-Corner Yes and no😑 Use it on my Macbook Air 2012 exclusively. Recently i looked at fedora, zorin, ubuntu 24.04 (removed snap) and endeavour, all very interesting, as System76 is working on their own Rust based desktop. Not sure they manage that to become stable soon, so need a fallback. Zorin is very nice, lets see when their update to 24.04 arrives. I would use Mint, but cinnamon is not my cup of tea. I keep my old hardware, so i have dozens of notebooks and desktop pcs to play with.

I used Mint for 6months. It was on 'ok' experience. But I would never recommend it to anyone who is new to Linux... Even to my sworn enemies. Instead I would 100% recommend openSUSE Leap or Tumbleweed with KDE DE. Mint's cinnamon is just a big nope. Zero useful functionalities in it, while on KDE side, its a dreamwalk. Also in Mint's store almost everything is flatpak instead of native package, which is anything but good attitude on their end. Flatpaks use 10x more disk space. How can they just shrug like that over this? A package that natively requires 200megs, will install 2gigs, because of sandbox... With this manner why the hell not just install separate linux instances for each package??!
@matyasmarkkovacs83362 ай бұрын
Opensuse is not meant for new users, especially not tumbleweed. Mint is waay more friendly and easier to use. You can just ignore flatpaks and choose the native packages. Cinnamon is much more reliable and stable than KDE. Zero functionalities?? You should learn how to tweak it, because cinnamon really has a lot of features. KDE is a buggy mess after KDE 6 was released.

@@matyasmarkkovacs8336 yepp I'm already back to Linux Mint since I wrote that. I couldn't bare any longer with all the KDE glitches that you also mentioned here. It seems that I had to experience this on my own bare "skin". Mint is THE best linux, period. I trust Mint so much, and its Cinnamon is better and smoother experience on X11 than KDE on x11 or wayland. Mint team surely knows what they're doing, I really hope they'll keep up this quality. openSUSE is the shittest, after using it for 2months, its unbearably unrealiable and also the support team is very arrogant there. Mint support on the other hand is always answering my questions with warm heart. I should have never left Mint after all. But I'm back home now. Nice cozy safe home, of Mint
