I have used Linux Mint and I have found that you can remove Flatpak. The only thing that doesn't work is the Software Manager but you can install Gnome Software Center or Plasma Discover instead. You still have Synaptic Package Manager as well if you want to use that. So you don't loose any other features because everything else works. On Linux Mint 21.3 the Ubuntu based version of Mint removing Flatpak doesn't stop the Mint Software Manager from working. It still works but it just has the Deb packages which is what I want. I now use Debian because it has more choice of desktop environments and doesn't come bloated with Snaps or Flatpaks which I don't use. Also in Debian if I were to change my mind I could install Snap, Flatpaks or both if I want to. It's easy to do and I like that Debian gives you the choice and doesn't come bundled with Snaps as Ubuntu does.

I advise having a working OS on one drive, and another drive to test other distros. The user retains a functional OS, and can test others when there is spare time.

From what I know there is a good choice of fine Linux distros available today. I have a pwrsonal preference for KDE and stability so I am very comfortable with openSUSE Leap. I think that similar would apply to Tumbleweed. It is crucial, IMO, to install a distro and really get to know it first. After this one can decide upon whether to stay with it orchange to another distro more suitable to your needs and one that is more comfortable in your use. I have to say that I have great respect for openSUSE in this case.

The correct answer is Arch. Really though, whatever you find that works best for you and what you want to do. Until you find something better, of course. I'm always looking and improving. I hope you are too. Though anything operating system related and how to make my computer do what I want it to do (and nothing extra, please!) is one of my main hobbies, so I understand most people just want it to work and not mess with things so much.

I’m a new Linux user of just over 2 months, using Debian 12 Stable at the moment. In the first week of knowing Linux I started with Kubuntu 24.04 because I like KDE, then tried Linux Mint because it is recommended to starters, before jumping to Debian because at the time it seemed to be more straightforward if I wanted to both avoid snap, and to install multiple DEs. At the moment I’m not quite sure whether I should continue to use Debian. It serves me well at the moment, but oftentimes when I have to try to do something more involved, I find myself out of depth to deal with guides and tutorials for Debian. I like the idea of using Debian and also like really using it, but I do wonder if I’m a try-hard stubbornly using it while being not capable enough. Like, “if I have difficulty follow the guides for Debian, should I be using it now? Perhaps I should go ‘git gud’ with Linux through Linux Mint first, then transition to Debian later when I’m ready for it.” I’m still using Debian out of comfort right now, but I’m really not sure if it’s the right way…

Debian is by far the 'easiest' of the downstream distros. If it feels slightly unmanagagable but you're still doing it, I would stick with it. It will become more comfortable through usage, and you've already demonstrated that you are capable by installing and using it daily. I think a good indicator of when it is time to switch distros is when you run into something your current distro can't do, or does worse than others. I had been running debian 12 for the last year, but just recently moved over to picaOS (debian sid based distro w/ a bunch of custom kernel patches) because I wanted more recent packages and more focus on gaming than vanilla debian delivered.

The method I would use is an external SSD, but currently, I am using Mega Sync. I have all my files stored there. Mega Sync offers 50 GB of free storage, and you can pay for additional space if needed. However, if you do need more than 50Gb, I would suggest an external SSD.

I run all my applications in VBox VMs. My Host OS is a minimal install of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on OpenZFS. The VMs I use daily or a few times per week are: 1. Xubuntu 24.04 LTS, the only one with open ports (email, (a)social media, kde-connect and transmission); 2. Ubuntu 16.04 ESM (encrypted by VBox; bookkeeping); 3. Windows XP Home (jukebox); Not very much used during the last weeks: 4. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, because 24.04 LTS is crap in a VBox VM (experiments and trying out new stuff). 5. Ubuntu Budgie 24.04 LTS (multimedia). 6. Windows 11 Pro. Windows XP is my oldest VM, installed and activated in March 2010. It survived 2 VBox owners; 3 desktops and 4 CPUs. It plays the wma copies of my CDs and LPs with WoW and TrueBass effects in Windows Media Player 11.

Some become almost religious in distros and territorial for anyone to say anything against it. For me, it is simple. Try them, find what works for you and your style. I have been working with Linux since the very first year it was created. Used many of the OGs like SLS->Slackware, Debian, RHL(Fedora), SUSE that are still going today. Arch came a bit later, but brings a different take on it. I will occasionally move to different distros because I love the world of Linux and love to see what the different styles are doing.

why use mint? CONVENIENCE. there are 3 reasons I use mint. 1. nemo file manager -> open as root, open in terminal (you can do this with other FMs, but you need to install addons some extras, nemo does it out of the box. 2 Driver manager - I have not found a distro that handles nvidia driver and other driver issues better. sure fedora will install, but upgrades and others always give me problems. if you use blender, installing the developer pack or whatever extras can cause alot of frustration. once I had to compile some package just to get the driver so to show in blender. i have better things to do. dumped fedora and installed mint. sure it is not as snappy, but so much easier. speed is measured in productivity, not the milliseconds it takes to open a window. 3.removing old kernels - the mint upgrade manager window makes this so easy, see what kernel is installed and get rid of what you dont need. fast, simple, convenient. you should mention these when doing reviews. one thing I dont understand is when you are doing an install review, why not show how to custom partition the HDD and go through the installer. this is the most important part for people using a distro for the first time. I want to make sure my data on home is not lost. go through the settings. show how much space to leave for swap, home, file system, UEFI, etc. this is the stuff people want to know. not the talk about the same features all other distros have. do a full install and review, not just auto install

I don't like any *ubuntu flavors, sorry about that. I don't like Fedora anymore. I had been an Arch user for a while, and that improved my skills a lot. Gentoo had also been a good workout. In the last few years I went for distros in which I can find vanilla desktop to customize by myself and trustworthy software. My favorite is Opensuse KDE although it is not targeted to rooky users. It seems more power user oriented to me. I also like distro supplying good manuals cause it bothers me to read tons of threads wasting time. Debian is one of my favorites primarily in lack of beefy hardware.

If you want a distro to actually use and get work done its Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin, Manjaro ect. If you don't care about stability and only want to play with your distro its arch. It really is that simple. There are hundreds of distros out there. about 5-6 of them are good enough to use daily.

I have used Linux for 30+ years and distro hop once a month. I have tried dozens of distros and put them thru their paces. Everyone has something wrong with them but Linux Mint does the best job for me. I also have Debian 12 on a second drive and have found that to be very usable! Most don't even install on my old Fujitsu laptop and some of those that did either did not support the hardware or didn't have needed apps in the repositories. At this moment I'm re-installing mint on the laptop because it had Mint 19.3 which is no longer supported. I installed IVentoy on my home server and away it went installing over the network! It's too early to say if this is going to work but Linux is getting better thanks to Ubuntu & Mint!

30+ years and still distro hopping? Damn. My prime distro hopping days were the first two to four, maybe six years. These days, hopping has been replaced with testing new distros in VMs, or Ventoy for those distros that don't play well with virtualization. I no longer want to take the risks of constantly changing my main and only machine, and want at least some semblance of stability in terms of the way my system functions. No more funny stuff like mismatching/different umasks causing different ownership and permissions for different files. That said, a bit of hopping won't hurt here and there when wanting to try something new and feeling adventurous, and just tired of using the same old distro.

My work computer is a Windows machine. I'm allowed the freedom to distro hop on my personal laptop. I landed on Fedora KDE. The most difficult switch for me wasn't from Ubuntu-based to Red Hat based, but from Gnome to KDE. Now I could easily use both. The truth is you have to try out a few different distributions and desktop environments before you find something you like.

Well you can waste a lot of time reinstalling the OS frequently while you could do other things. I got a laptop with popos and the main PC with arch in it. When there is something wromg with arch im like "oh pop is going to be better", when pop is having a problem "well how about arch?". It usually isnt the distros fault and the problem is either fixable by me or the devs. All my problems were nvidia related but are fixed now. They just run. I also have a small 2in1 with arch on it with arch, never considered hopping on there because it doesnt have an nvidia and so everything just worked ever since. Maybe ill go opensuse tumbleweed but I dunno, no need currently. Back then when nvidia wayland support was complete crap ive distrohopped a lot to find one with non-shitty multimonitor support under x11 but couldnt find any.
