I'm getting ready to turn 60 years old. I've always been a much bigger fan of racing on turf than I am of racing on conventional dirt or synthetic surfaces, which is the reason I've followed the sport on a world wide basis for more than 30 years now, and I can't remember a more prolific sire in my lifetime than Galileo, at least as an influence for turf. He ran his last race ironically on dirt at Belmont in the 2001 Breeders Cup Classic and was sent off to Coolmore Stud in Ireland about as soon as he returned to Ireland from the states. So with 2002 as your reference point to start looking for his offspring, it won't take anyone long to see how incredible the overall number is of major stakes races all over the world that the sons and daughters of Galileo have dominated year after year.

I never had a clue about horses .I was working for farm relief service ...they said to us you have to be at ballydoyle in morning ..that was in 1998 we were there till 2003 ...we did see the best horses in the world at that time gallieo was there he was just a pure champion..every people have there own animals and the love for them .....at my time I fell in love with giantscauseway .I mucked him out and he was my favourite. .r.I.p. ....to just go into ballydoyle and to even watch it is unreal ..best in the businesses. .

Had a wonderful visit here with the father. They took Galileo, One Cool Cat and the Rock out for us ... but Sadler's (R.I.P) only stuck his head out of the box, so I kissed him on the cheek. Very quiet place, serene. The boardroom features a framed cartoon on the wall of Sir Alex claiming Rock of Gibraltar was his.

I love horses and admire horse racing, love our little Australian mare Winx who’s just claimed her 30th consecutive win (I think). But.....I wish there was no such thing as yearling and 2 year old racing, they’re just too young

Frances Craft unfortunately they do race them as two year olds and the damage can be catastrophic. I’ve seen cannon bones explode out as they are pushed too hard too early. I’ve even seen one year olds saddled and tested. Just because they might not enter them in cash races doesn’t mean they aren’t racing them at dawn practice.

I meant to state that 1 year olds(yearlings) are not raced. Year-long spend the year learning and building muscle and stamina. Not sure how I feel about racing at 2 other than the fact that their ability at that age is a good gauge of how they pass on that ability to their offspring at least that is what breeders believe. I don't feel they should be racing in grade 1 races though. I think grade 1 races should be restricted to 3 and older.

Horses don't physically mature until age 5-7, depending on the horse. I'm sure to mature mentally takes just as long. Perhaps that's why we see so many racehorses who are hard to handle on a track-they are still too young, they are kids being told to do an adult's job, and they rebel against that. I've been told that its ok to race a two year old, as it aids in physical development (???) but I don't like it. How can it be good for a horse, whose bones and growth plates and soft tissues aren't done growing, to be racing, or even being asked to go full out in training? Horses this age should be in the pasture with other colts and fillies their own age, playing, learning herd manners, and being trained by humans to just behave around people, in the barn, for the farrier and vet. If horses were not raced until, at the very least, age 4, there would be fewer racehorses. Why? Because only the rich can afford racing-think of feed and vet costs, barn costs, training costs, travel expenses and more. Only the rich could afford to keep a horse in the pasture, until it was at least 4, before it begins to earn its keep. That would mean, fewer horses racing with unhealed injuries masked by painkillers, dropping in class until they are running over and over again in claiming races. Racing until they either break down and are euthanized, or are unable to race, and are sold to a kill pen, bound for a slaughterhouse in Canada or Mexico. Fewer racehorses, would mean fewer inbred animals. All racehorses are inbred, and dangerously so. Northern Dancer, for example, had weak ankles, and passed that to his progeny, simply because so many of his progeny had him as a grandfather on BOTH sides. Ruffian, who had Northern Dancer in her pedigree, had weak ankles, and look how she ended. All this inbreeding allows less dominant genes to come out, and unfortunately, those genes are often not good for the health of the horse-or any animal. Thoroughbreds inherit a tendency to not carry pregnancies to full term, resulting in weak foals or stillbirths. They inherit a tendency to weak joints. Or inherited diseases. Thoroughbred horses have not had an influx of fresh genetic material since the mid 1700's, wth the Byerly Turk and Godolphin Arabian. Maybe its time to reintroduce more Arab blood. Arabians have the reputation for good health, physical and mental toughness, and this is what the breed needs.

They have to race them young, as a colt gets older and he becomes sexually mature they’re not as effective on the race course. They’re are exceptions of course but in general this is the thinking. The lower graded horses are gelded and can race for years on the flat and over jumps. Yearlings don’t race.

From what I saw in this video I have to disagree with you. First off they are using bridles not chains over the top gums like they do in the states so that is a big improvement. Have you ever handled horses? Especially stallions on a cool day? I also truly hate to see horses yanked around for no good reason but what I saw in this video is people just intelligently handling some quiet but also some hot horses. Thoroughbreds can be nuts and stallions can be very tricky so you need to know what you are talking about.

His FIRST crop of only 21 foals nevertheless produced a Canadian Horse of the Year, and nine others also became stakes winners, 47% of his crop. O’Brien had nothing to do with that. His second crop included Nijinsky, but also a filly who was Canadian Horse of the Year and co-champion three yearold filly in both Canada AND the USA. O’Brien had nothing to do with her, either. He was moved from Taylor’s stud farm in Canada to Maryland in 1968, not because of Nijinsky’s success ( he didn’t win the English Triple Crown until 1970) but because American breeders were already clamouring to use him. O’Brien helped, but he certainly didn’t need him.

Dorothy Buie The bit(in this case) isn't the problem. It is the jerking on the lead that is the problem. The bits are pain free and as some call "Place holders" because they are pretty much just a place holder. If the horse is upset by it I'm sure they would go bitless. Less stress = better breeding = more foals Less stres also = happy horse = happy visisters

I get its a industry at the end of the day (so there's a certain language used) and its clearly a very well run business but I don't get how these people can be so generalised in how they talk about the horses. There's no feeling of individuality or personality in the horses, they work with them all day is there not more affection / knowledge of little unique traits? @ Megham Draws - if you spent time with these people at the studs you'd realise that there are amazing bonds between the animals and the humans. It's just very hard to convey that in a small time window like this video. If someone came to your town with a video camera and said you have a few minutes to summarize the type of people who live in the area, it would be very hard for you to convey much about single individuals wouldn't it.

Stallions are powerful animals and can bite in a split second. The handlers need to be safe and walking a horse of this calibre in a natural horsemanship rope halter would be down right dangerous. These horses aren't children's ponies and although l don't agree with the yanking on the bit l do agree with having a bit in the horses mouth.

I can tell only a select few know what they are talking about. #1. Whether you like the Shiek or not, he has great horses. Mainly because he realized Nearco, N.D's sire was the best and for generations to come. Besides for a select few like Roberto, Intentional, Princequillo and just a few more. No matter how much they “love” these horses, money and profit is always the bottom line. Who knows how many blood horses end up abused, broken and sent to slaughter each year. Thousands and thousands. Overbreeding world wide for greed is horrendous.

I can ensure you that slaughter is frowned upon and its always the owners and trainers interest in giving the horses the best treatment. Whether jts to give them more time, sell them due to them not coping with training or retirement. Of course, the BBC did find that horse slaughter was continuing last year in 2021 but legislations came in to stop that. Too many racehorses exist. The ones who are successful, often have wonderful retirements, siring more racehorses, or bearing the next generation. After their reproductive years are done, they spend their time in paddocks, with other retried mares and geldings. But the ones who don't deliver the goods on the track, may, if they are lucky, end up in 2nd careers, as jumpers, trail horses, pleasure riding horses, or even just regarded as pets, and rarely ridden again. Those who aren't lucky, go through owner after owner, first on the track, where they go down in class for a few years, until they run in claiming races. Then, when they are truly played out, they get sold, for mere dollars, to a kill shelter, and end up on someone's plate. The majority of racehorses do not get cushy retirements. They get cruelty, and a shockingly cruel end.

Yea I'm sure those two horses have been elated to have been Broken by you go on have great racing careers to come back to see the guy who broke them with his rough hand chucking on that stallion chain with a bit in there mouth, things have changed we don't have to lead any horse with a bit & there's a different way natural horsemanship, if urgent chucking that chain that much to get his head up, my stallion tb walks with me everywhere without a lead he is doing liberty (look it up) he raced placed 1st in his first race on the curragh & 2nd in naas but was sold intire to a guy who had no clue he was a 2 year old, I got him for under 500 quid the guy was so scared of him, saddles Wells is his great grandfather he is stunning... Stop the old ways of breaking & controling horses try have a partnership, & he doesn't have to live in a stable hardly ever.... Stop the cruelty of race horses. All horses

It's not a halter. It's an in-hand show bridle. My wife has one for our mini stallion, but she rarely uses it. She opts for a show halter.

These stallions are encouraged for being aggressive and are highly resistant to their handlers. The bit is for the handlers and for the horses safety so they decide not to drag their handler, especially if there’s a mare in heat nearby.
