Attic Vent Turbine Repair

On windy nights our roof gets as loud as a drawer full of silverware getting thrown down a stairway. Fixing broken attic turbine vents is unbelievably quick and easy. Be careful on the roof friends!

Using power tools on those fasteners is a sure way to strip them out. Hand tools is the way to go, even if it does take an extra 1 min.

This must be another one of those lamictos. Mine doesn't have the straps on the side I don't know what brand it is it was here before I got the house. Mine has a 9/16 hex head on the inside bottom And rattle's like hell in the wind don't see much play but shaft inside is rusted.

I think it is Lamco. There are several brands at the local home centers, you might just get lucky.

Are most of those turbines the same size?

As I recall there were 2-3 sizes. I measured it and took a tape measure with me to the store to double check.

Thanks AZ DIY Guy------- You just reminded me to replace my old squeaky fan, with a brand new fan, instead of trying to lube the thing. Easier to just get a new one like you showed, and trash the parts in a new kit. Only thing I need to do is spray paint the new turbine, while it is on ground level. Beige spray paint at the hardware store.

Could rain water come in through those holes on the vent?

No, they are a very common rooftop design. Far smarter people than I crafted them to work just right. I've never seen evidence of water intrusion in this nearly 45 year old house.

So how does water and insects , Like bee's that make nests and hives not get in you attic . you would think they go in between the louvers when the wind is calm. or do i not see a screen to at least to keep the bugs out anywhere.

Water gets deflected by the design I suppose, but good question on insects.

@@AZDIYGuy I called Lomanco (the manufacturer of WhirlyBird) They stated the standard part number for the full assembly is BEB-12-(whichever color you want). The head replacement is TEB-12-(color) and is only a couple dollars cheaper and usually has to be specially ordered which causes freight charges that actually make it more expensive than the full assembly. Oh well, I tried.

Are turbines better for our phx "flat roofs", like your on, or just gable vents are better?

I'm not really sure. Ours is primarily a sloped roof. We do have gable vents and soffit vents as well. It still gets blistering hot up there. I like these turbines because they not only vent, but they move the air. I did have a powered gable vent in a previous home that did really well too.

We didn't get any in when they broke because all the pieces were still in place. We had a neighbor completely lose one in high winds, rain sure got in that gaping hole.

Don’t throw the rest of the kit away, you can use the base to cover a leak or hole in the roof temporarily in an emergency until you can fix it correctly.

Good idea to keep some stuff on hand. I'd been a pack-rat for years, but at some point I stopped keeping most leftover material. The clutter just got overwhelming versus the minor cost of buying something when/if I need it. I still have a ton of random stuff I have not touched in many years to clear out.

why is the title mention repair when you are simply replacing them?

My video, my choice. Because I didn't do an invasive full shingle lift, nail-pull, and replace the flange and all operation. A top swap repair is well within the skillet of an average homeowner with a screwdriver to repair, whereas an actual full replacement is significantly more challenging. A bearing repair / replacement would also be a challenging diy for most. Sorry for the confusion.
