Keeping up with Chris: Excelling with Down Syndrome

When Chris Bunton was born with Down Syndrome his parents wondered if he’d ever achieve the independence they dreamed of… but he has exceeded all their expectations. At just 22 years old, Chris combines part-time work with university study as well as a demanding gymnastics training programme.
Chris invites us into his busy life in Sydney, while his parents share insights they have gained from raising an independent son.

There is a misconception that because they speak funny (now there is a tongye surgery to help them with that) and have some learning difficulties and tend to be over weight and not to have much coordination (if they are not properly feed and taught how to exercise) they can not have wonderfull lives (friends, family, education, job, independence, hobbies, healthy life style, values, self discipline, self worth, etc). They can, now we fully know.

@@peaceandlove544 - their "college graduation" isn't what a normal college degree is obviously. DS people have very low IQ, so as the woman said, college for DS is not about academics, but more about increasing possible independence and possibly being more able to speak up for themselves. They definitely won't have any friends. As you could see, even chris has no actual friends. The ONE normal friend they pretended Chris had was a very kind man who knew Chris from the age of 5. But it was very clear that they couldn't have any normal conversation. It's more about the normal boy being very kind and spending time with a disabled boy. But they literally had NOTHING real to talk about. Because everything that is a challenge for Chris and is a major part of his life is super easy for the normal boy.

Honestly, that is one thing I have noticed while being around disabled people of all kinds. Because of my mother, we would often have contact to a local support group for people with a certain walking disability (it is called multiple sclerose and does not only affect walking but can manifest in a variety of ways) and everyone there was nicer than I would have imagined. And after also meeting people with cognitive and speaking disabilities, paired with my own experience with my listening disability I think it is safe to say that disabled people are nicer because they know how shitty life is and try to be the most pleasant person they can be to make it better for everyone. At least that is my opinion based on personal experience.

Because he's very lucky to be so functional. I love this guy and his positivity. He is amazing. But as a person with DS he is extremely lucky to be so cognitively functional that he can live a mostly normal life. Most people with the same condition are unfortunately unable to survive without help. They need our help and we should unreservedly give it. Don't pretend that this person's success is representative of everyone with the same unfortunate condition. Help them! Help us all.

My brother had Down Syndrome. He wasn't as high functioning but I wonder how different things might have been for him with all of the help people with Down Syndrome now get. My brother was born in the late 1930s when most kids were institutionalized. My mother refused to do that for which we are all grateful.

Chris is amazing! It is so great to be able to see an example of how EVERY child can learn and evolve if they are given the adequate support. I hate to see so many children and adults with down syndrome in my country, who were never given the opportunity to be the best they can, because they were born into a family that was either ignorant or unwilling to help them get there. I hate that! I know some that were never even taught to talk properly, which means that after their parents die, those people will not even be able to communicate their basic needs to the people that will care for them later on. I am sure that all of them, given that they are not autistic, are perfectly able to learn to speak! I really hate those negative examples, so it is so amazing to see Chris enjoying his life and doing things that even the "normal" people would struggle with! :)

I think what they have achieved as parents is outstanding and Chris has absolutely thrived with the Support he’s given, it truly is an amazing eye opener of what people with Down syndrome can actually achieve and the independence they can develop. Although I did notice that at some times in the video, people were actually quick to shut him down for doing things that actually made sense, like for example when Chris and his Mother were shopping and he tried to grab the beans through the bag, which is actually a really aware thing to do, and she stops him and gets him to do it the normal way. I think Chris’ parents and mentors etc. should give Chris a bit more trust, he actually seems to think things through better than those around him. I cried tears of joy watching this video, best of luck in your future endeavours Chris.

He goes to uni, is employed, he does groceries,travels on his own, can drive, cooks, is an athlete at the friggin Olympics, and we wonder how he'll do when really he's doing way better than most of us Not to mention he's well mannered , no drama, and he's fit and ...charming ...I wouldn't be surprised if he got an amazing gf

The National association for Down syndrome recommends all Down people have cervical spine films before participating in competitive sports as 20% have cervical spine abnormalities that can result in severe injury (like quadriplegia) hope this sweet man was screened

Wow if I would met the guy I would think that he has a minor speech impairment but never that he has DS. He is handsome short men with a cute face. I wish him the best. And big props to the dad!

“We have some issues... driving” lol! His little giggles talking about learning to drive were too cute. His parents are so amazing and have done an amazing job teaching, helping, and supporting him. There is no stopping him! His dad was funny when they asked them if they they he will be and can independent one day and he said the only obstacles is his mom letting go ❤️

I’m proud of Chris and his parents. I have a teenager daughter with downsyndrome and I’m so proud of her. Each day she amazes me. I don’t know what the future holds for her,but we’ll take it each day at a time.
