Liam Ngatuere, who lives with Down syndrome, and his carer Shane Te Hamua, who lives with depression, have a special bond. They share a love of singing, whanau, Maoridom, food and Elvis. Great...fantastic story...tears & a snotty nose!! I have terminal liver cancer..im from Wellington nz & have lived in Melbourne 20years. Time to come home..covid & quarantine at the moment. Have to be with family for my last years...when he said depression like a dripping bath...ive never heard that..its describes my depression. This documentary was awesome 😎 I tell you what if I wasn’t happily married I could fall in love with Shane. The qualities he has are so attractive and wonderful in every way!!!! Anyone would be lucky to loved by him like he loves Liam!!!! He and Liam have such a special relationship and if he is around by the time Liam’s mom can’t take care of him, I guarantee Shane will have a big part of taking care of him!!! I’m in awe of their friendship. I have depression myself and my aunt has an intellectual disability. She has taught me that it’s OK to feel and think in so many different ways. Maybe that’s why I can talk so openly about my feelings. I love her to bits!

Actually, I felt like replying to my own comment. When writing this, I wasn’t diagnosed with anything else than depression, but now I know that I also have autism, ADHD and panic disorder, so I’m more neurodiverse then I could officially tell when I wrote the original comment. I guess I’m not so different from my aunt. She likely has autism too, but it wasn’t diagnosed back when she was diagnosed with her intellectual disability. This was in the 70s.

Personally, I think his Liam language is freaking hilarious and adorable lol. And Shane… what can I say… the kindest heart, absolutely hilarious, had me in freaking stitches !! Putting on that Elvis costume for Liam was absolute gold. When they were watching some of his FB lives and Liam gave him that little love pat under his chin, I melted. I’m a single mom, my little boy is 2 y/o; he’s the greatest love of my life, I would give him the world if I could. I feel like I failure though bc the one thing he needs so much, is a dad; and I can’t be that and I can’t give him that … I can only dream he’d one day have someone like you- guiding him, teaching him, and loving him as you do Liam; unconditionally.

This is gorgeous. I know personally my support worked t school whose worked with me for 10 years has been such a key stone in my life and made me who I am. She’s been there through my hardest times and allowed me to heal so much. Forget bout just supporting me as a blind chick she’s been so much more than just someone who adapts my work. She is a guardian angel for me. These people often spend more time with us than our parents do, and it’s such a interesting dynamic because it’s not just teacher student. It’s like you take your aunt to school and they are trained in how to help you. Encouraging but also suooortive.

I love every episode that you produce and this one especially touched my heart. I had an older brother who was born with Down Syndrome and a multitude of other health issues. He died a year before i was born when he was 9 so I never got to meet him. I didn't find out about him until I was 16. My family did not take care of him so he was in the custody of the state his whole life. I really hope he had some beautiful angels in his life too that helped support him along his way.

I'm a 65yrs old woman w/ 6 kids, 10 Grandkids & 1 Great-Grandson who just turned 1yr. Two of them have disabilities. [1]is 4 & has health problems & the other is 20, with learning disabilities & will never be able to live on his own. But he has a job at the Bird Sanctuary 3 days aweek.
