Life with autism | DW Documentary

Markus is autistic. The documentary follows him for a year and shows what it’s like to live with autism. He’ll probably never grow up, nor does he want to.
"Most people don’t understand that, even my parents think it’s bad," says Markus. He spends a lot of his time playing with toys, while also dealing with the struggle for his father’s acceptance, and the question of what he can contribute to society. The documentary follows Markus for a year.
"I don’t want to be normal and part of the herd. I want to live how I want." Markus lives in Duisburg in western Germany. His home is completely cluttered with toys, including noisy motion-activated frogs, a singing Elvis and an angry snowman that tells you to watch it! Markus plays happily with his toys for hours, listening to children’s stories and drinking hot chocolate. Despite his autism, he does allow people to get close. He has an eccentric style, with a Prince Valiant haircut, a laser pointer round his neck and colorful plastic figures clutched in his hand. Markus’s father in particular wants him to grow up. His mother takes good care of him, but she encourages him to go out and meet other people more. She worries he could become lonely. That’s how he discovered his love of people with Down Syndrome, who he calls his Downies. "They take me as I am. They don’t question my ways. That’s a nice feeling." This documentary refers to questions as: what is autism? What are signs and symptoms of autism? How do autistic people behave?

@@sjjdjejdkdkd3716 Naturally, since to "grow up" is to work endless pointless jobs and maybe retire in 40 years. Why wait your whole life to begin living as you wish? His "childishness" is a rejection of the fake rules and regulations which everybody bends themselves to submit to, and collectively enforce. Doesn't everybody understand how we all submit part of our autonomy and desires to be part of society? But we don't have to! Childishness v Adulthood: where do you draw the boundaries? There is no real distinction. Its a fake social construction. The reality is of Freedom/Pleasure v the "moral" responsibilities/toil of adulthood, and wage labour. The "Rat Race," right? So its a natural reaction to society. Growing up is sacrificing the freedom of childhood to "become an adult" and become a "good, responsible" person. Purely a moral judgment (fake) The Adulthood/Childhood thing is just a mask for this. Unfortunately, the sanctions for violating these fake rules, for not living within the standard plan for living, are very real.

As an autistic woman I actually admire Markus a lot because he seems to have mastered something that I lack: self-acceptance and self-confidence. People like Markus remind me that it’s ok to be different. That there is not only one accepted way to exist in society and that you should not live your life on other people’s terms.

@@brianmeen2158 agreed, acceptance has limits, this guy is a literal man-child and acts very infantile ,he needs help to learn to cope, and move forward in a positive and productive manner, sure, hes not really hurting anyone, but he is hurting and limiting himself and that is not healthy, no matter how you spin it. this guy is avoiding being an adult, his life is counter-productive and its not healthy, in the long run he will not be happy. i have known folks like this in my years of working in social services for disabled adults and they at times claim to be happy and love their life, you see them over time deteriorate, lose skills,regress even further, and they do get depressed, they suffer from very low self-esteem, low self confidence and it causes major suffering long term. if he has the toys as a side hobby that would be fine, but its his main activities / hobby and pretty much consumes him.

His happiness is adorable. I love that he lives in a way that makes him happy. Cos that's what life's about, right? To live a happy life! :) As an autistic female, I am actually very similar to this side of the spectrum, so thank you for this video, it has helped me understand myself a little more. I just worry that there will be people that watch this and assume that we are all the same. The spectrum is very broad and there are so many little differences to each autistic person. And I'm sick of people saying that autism immediatly means extremely stupid. We just think differently and see things differently. Just because some of us can be extremely anxious and go mute sometimes and struggle to explain/express feelings doesn't mean there's nothing going on in our brains! Thanks for reading this. It's easier for women who are on the spectrum then it is for men. My odd behaviour may even look cute but a man with similar behaviour would be considered insane. Also, a woman with autism can find a man who will take care of her while a man with autism is left to himself.

@@gacomics5951 There is still a pervasive belief that women can't be autistic and they are still often under- or misdiagnosed. Pair a lack of diagnosis with trying to fit into a world you don't quite fully understand or fit into (but are socially pressured to be socially acceptable and agreeable, perhaps a bit more than men), and it's a recipe for leading a frustrating, unfulfilling life. I'd say the challenges for each gender are unique and neither is better. I know autistic men in relationships and autistic women whose interests/personalities are too intense for them to maintain relationships. Every individual is exactly that, an individual! Most importantly, let's hope society gets more accepting of people's differences.

I'm also a 35 years old autistic guy, and I see things what I recognize problems in my own live. Autistic comes in many kinds, I don't act like a child, i'm try to be "normal" in my own way, but in my apartment I can releax in my own way. My skills are i'm very good at computers,electronics, music and movies. At my ICT work place, I do all the wiring for the pc testing table's. My coworks are very happy what I do with making those better work/testing places. But there is one skill what I own I don't like, is when i'm inside off a builing i'm trying to put the hole place inside my head. If there is to must noise, i'm getting instable and get very tired. But I must say i'm happy with my life. I work for my own money, have nice apartment and married for 7 years. I have great family/friends to support me. So I can say i'm lucky.

@@joogaloo8405 He's in Germany. In theory, there is a possibility for him to find employment. The government will pay part of his salary. At some point he mentions that he and Ramona have less money because they don't go to "the workshop" any more. There are special workshops for special needs people in Germany, usually run by some charities. They will pay some nominal salary and they often make people do very repetitive or dull work, and/or are very structured, so not all people with disabilities are able or willing to work there.

I hold down a job that allows to work alone, so that when not working I can be social. I went to University. I took care of mom for 5 years before she passed. I have a dachshund. I own my own car

I'm glad he seems to be happy at least. Unfortunately I'm 30 and got ASD diagnose this year. I'm in emotional pain, dissociation and anhedony almost everyday. Markus seems to be as we all are .... except he has not got the aggression and intolerance that it appears is prevalent throughout most of the world towards things most people don't want to understand or accept. I hear for special people or those that are on the further part of the spectrum, it's because they often rip their hair out or will choke themselves with it. But they can't have it too short either or they may feel vulnerable and get anxiety attacks. That's why they can't have bangs or yknow anything like that, it's just the safe cut.

If my child were severely autistic, I'd take good care of them and they would not look like they had anything out of the ordinary. I admire Katie Price for how she brings up Harvey, he wears normal trendy and fashionable clothes, he has cool hair and looks good. She takes care of him and he's obviously well brought up. I'd make sure from an early age that normal things such as going to the hairdresser, cutting nails, brushing teeth, choosing good clothes, keeping clean and smart etc were priority. I work with young vulnerable adults with autism, learning disabilities and challenging behaviour. Some of our residents are very resistant to hair cuts and to assistance with personal care. Some parents are brilliant and buy them clothes from Superdry, Nike, Gym King and skinny jeans etc, and we put the radio on, music channels, keep things current.

Is there a version without an English dub? As a German who speaks German, it's really irritating and confusing if I hear the German language voiced over with the English language, my brain can't really decide which language it should listen to and gets confused. Subtitles are way better than dubs because, for people who know both languages, it gets harder to understand because they know both languages and I think I'm not the only one feeling like that 😅😅

I plan on working with kids who have autism. I absolutely adore people who have autism, they're not judgemental, loving, understanding. I use to take kare of a 14 yr old with autism who weighted over 250lbs. love him to death, but DAMN he ate me out of house! I miss him a lot, but his mother robbed me.. it kills me that kids with autism are being treated so poorly..

Don't be too harsh on him, if autistic people are so fond of particular kind of niche interests it's also because it keeps them going. It can be a way to avoid the things they have to do and are source of anxiety but it's also what keeps them alive.

Looking at Markus, he seems to be such a kind soul, meeting everyone with an open heart, caring about his friends, not caring about whether someone is disabled or “different” in some way, just treating others as human beings, something that many “normal”, neurotypical people could learn from. And yet, he is the one that supposedly struggles with empathy, when it is the others who constantly judge and belittle people like him. Is it really the case that autistic people “have less empathy” and “don’t understand others” or is it simply the case that society values social protocol more than actual empathy and authenticity? I really feel that when people talk about autistic people struggling to understand others they mean that we don’t know what the social rules are in a given situation, not that we do not care about or emphasize with another person’s feelings. Neurotypicals likewise struggle to understand autistic people’s reactions and feelings and yet we don’t assume that they are lacking in empathy, they’re just the majority.

Their way of communication is so different and I feel like it's so sad that people don't notice when they try so hard to understand others around them and people don't try in return so the communication is missed... I am on the spectrum...but when you meet one person with autism, you have met ONE person with autism. It manifests itself in many ways! In my little autistic world, I would go NUTS with all that noise!!! I could never live with that. I can't have more than one form of noise going or I can't think and I get agitated. That said, like Markus, I have a mechanical aptitude, and I love to play. I play video games, and build models, and play musical instruments. That is my play. I think Markus is sweet and cool. He'd definitely be on my friends list if I lived close to him.

I knew all my life that I was "different", teachers kept telling my mom to take me to a mental health expert, because I didn't like playing with other kids and was completely happy playing alone, I had huge issues socializing with other people and don't like being touched. Still have problems giving my mom a hug :/ that makes me sad. All my life I always just had one special friend, can't function in groups. I can get overly attached when I feel like I connect with someone on a deeper level and one break up with an ex boyfriend made me suicidal, fortunately I was able to snap out of it. I used to call people in general "the others", in a sense that I was not like everyone else (even though I wished I was) never felt I could belong. Nowadays I know how to and can act normal though. I just would like to find out what my problem is.
