Great video. I have a row of grey dogwood. I keep up with the suckers to control them. When is the best time of year to prune them? I have let them grow over the years but they will need a proper pruning. Thanks

Mid to late winter is the best time to prune trees and shrubs.

Western Montana- love & keep planting them but deer eat them as fast.

Deer browse on newly planted shrubs is a problem across the US. I try to cage or otherwise protect (planting them in thick treetops left over from logging) planted shrubs.

Yes!! ID video! I’m mid-Atlantic all of these could be in my area! Please add any info you can about winter Identification. It’s hard to get into swampy thicket areas in summer but I hike and explore them in winter.

How do I make the most suckers if I want them to spread
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 16 күн бұрын
They will sucker fairly quickly with out any help, but disturbance tends to really get them going - cutting the shrubs back and prescribed fire tend to get a string sucker response.

Can they be controlled by keeping grass cut around the thicket
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 10 ай бұрын
Absolutely! If you are mowing around the thicket that will take care of any root sprouts that are popping up.

Would these thicket dogwoods crowd out the invasive honeysuckle we have in Northern KY?
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology Жыл бұрын
Not without controlling the bush honeysuckle first and keeping them controlled while allowing the thicket dogwoods time to establish. Also, you would want other native shrubs in the mix along with the dogwoods. A mono culture of natives is better than a monoculture of invasives, but it is still a monoculture and not great as far as pollinator and critter habitat goes. There is more info about the invasive bush honeysuckles in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZyufmeamppsnrc

Is Swida a new taxon? I've always known them as Cornus...
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology Жыл бұрын
Cornus has been split in several new genera. Cornus is now for the cornelian cherries. Swida includes the dogwoods with white and blue drupes, and the large bracted dogwoods like the flowering dogwood are in yet another genus, Benthamidia. The dwarf dogwoods such as bunchberry are now in the genus Chamaepericlymenum.
