@MichaelEd5 жыл бұрын
ERS772 through my experience with starting issues with my Grizzly, if it’s still clicking when trying to start I would check the battery. My grizzly is notorious for not kicking out the start bendex if it’s not getting at least 12v. I’ve also noticed that the cheaper (Walmart/auto parts store) batteries don’t do well either. I’ve had to get the good oem battery which was for me about 120.00 dollars and I haven’t had a battery issue for 3yrs now, unlike the other cheaper batteries which would crap out, or not have enough amps to kick out the starter bendex after maybe one year. Long story short look at your voltage and amperage when trying to start your grizzly. I found anything at or under 12volts will cause the relay to click. Other than that you could take your starter to the auto parts store and have them test it to make sure your not have a start problem, but I’m pretty confident that if your relay is clicking and you bought a good relay that it may be a battery issue. I hope my experience is/was helpful.

DRAPERispeace yes sir! I read all comments posted, and try to responded as timely as possibly. best advise I can think of is to start at the beginning and work through the process of elimination to help find the reason why it isn’t starting. Get you volt meter and check battery for proper volts (anything above 12, like 12.25 is a hot battery) Check to see if the solenoid is working. (Are you getting 12 volts to the starter when trying to crank it?) If not refer back to the solenoid. Check the fuses on the solenoid. Can you up the solenoid to make the starter engage? If those are good, have you tested your starter? Does it work properly? Does your atv make that buzzing sound like in my video?

Hi I have a question and am hoping you can help me out online VS a service. I was out yesterday doing a run. Other bikes were struggling at one area so I shut my 2021 Kodiak EPS off. Once everyone was through the troublesome area, I switched my key on, the display lit up as normal, I pushed the starter and there was a click. The screen went blank. There was no power. I jiggled the key on / off. In the on position - there was no response. Moving to the off position, the screen would light up and cycle through whatever it does and then turn off. This happened several times in about 20 minutes of effort. We checked battery connections and most of the fuses with no luck. We jiggled some wires and connections again and then disconnected / reconnected the battery and everything then worked fine. This is the 3rd outing this has happened. It happens only sometimes - with no rhyme or reason. Do you have any insight as to what I should be looking for to fix this ?
@MichaelEd2 жыл бұрын
With it being that new, I would take it in under warranty. Could just be in the key switch, but if is doesn’t have a warranty you might wanna bring a multi meter with you to help find the bad connection. 🤷♂️ I know isn’t a definite answer but hopefully give you got some direction.

@MichaelEd4 жыл бұрын
Robert Little definitely check out your connections (tight, clean, no corrosion/rust and the same for your grounds [chassis and battery]. From your explanation I can only think it’s an electrical issues. Whether bad cables, connections or components (like starter, relay, battery) I can’t think of anything else that could cause it not to wanna turn off via the Key and start button. It’s really difficult to diagnose the situation from my end. Process of diagnosing/elimination via testing is going to help you find the issue.
@prudencegumdrop95573 жыл бұрын
Just replaced the solenoid damn thing still won't start
@MichaelEd3 жыл бұрын
@@prudencegumdrop9557 could be a list of issues. Battery, battery connections, could be the new solenoid?🤷♂️ Best thing I would do is start by check that your battery is good and can produce enough amperage to start your atv, then test your starter to make sure it’s not hooped. After that it could be a number of connections and or starter switch/button, etc electrical connection between the key switch, starter button, relays, grounds, etc. If your atv is turning over and not starting, then you gotta go back to the basics of fuel, fire, and at the right time, and also compression. Not sure what going on with your atv when all there is to go on is “it won’t start, even though I replaced this part.”
@jagers4xford4713 жыл бұрын
Did you check those fuses? Wouldn't that suck if all it was was a blown fuse?
@MichaelEd3 жыл бұрын
Lucky the fuses are on both sides of the solenoid and easily visible. That would have been an easier fix because you wouldn’t be able to jump the post to start it with a blown fuse.
@Alaska75062 жыл бұрын
You do have 2 fuses, but 1 of them is a spare incase the main fuse blows. So the functioning fuse is the main fuse that powers all of the electrical on the entire machine. It also powers the electro magnet inside the starter relay, which is the clicking noise you hear when pushing the start button. And all it does when pushing the start button is it connects the battery side post of the relay to the starter power wire post, doing the same thing as jumping the 2 posts together like you did in the video, but without the sparks. If the main fuse is blown, the starter will still turn over by jumping the 2 post together, but the machine will not start, nor will anything on the machine have power. Hopefully this post will help save someone some time while trying to diagnose their machine!

The solenoids are crap. Even with a new starter, I am on my third, and it has started acting up. I hammered a piece of copper pipe flat, to use as the bridge between the contacts on the solenoid. I just leave it in the tool box for whenever I have a problem. As soon as I get some time, I am going to figure a way to wire an aftermarket solenoid in to replace the original unit. I am guessing that I have developed a problem with the compression release, because even with a brand new starter, it is having a problem turning the motor over. It starts, but it doesn't sound the same. I have been looking, but have not found anyone else complaining that the compression release is a problem with the Yamaha ATVs. I liked your welding lesson. Yes you can weld with a DC battery for power. That is why I always disconnect the negative lead at the battery..

Someone needs to make a fail video of Getting the grizzly to set the compression relief would be epic to watch. lol
@jjock3239 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelEd I have a good battery, new starter, and solenoid, on the ATV, and just to confirm my problem is the compression release, I put the voltmeter on the battery again before attempting a start. When pressing the start button, the voltage drops to near zero, and the solenoid just buzzes. I put the booster on the battery, and even then it has difficulty turning the motor over. After many tries, it suddenly started normally, the battery voltage barely dropped, and everything worked perfectly. This confirms that my problem is the compression release cams are stuck in the run position. The fix is going to require that I pull the valve cover to expose the cam gear, and replace the springs on the compression release. I am amazed that I have not seen any videos on this problem. At least I know what I have to do now. Hand starting it with this problem, is not possible. Something would break, probably the rope.

Rely, fuses and the your getting proper voltage to it and on the starter cable connection side of it. Starter, if all is good and your getting 12 volts to it, you might need to get it tested. Motor, 🤷♂️ just in case, make sure it isn’t locked-up. If your grizzly just started not cranking over and it was running fine before. I’d mainly check battery, relay, and fuses. *I have experience purchasing bad relays before, even though they were need.

@MichaelEd5 жыл бұрын
Seth Weathers so if your not able to jump the solenoid to engage the starter (example giving in the video) then I would test your battery for proper voltage. In my experience anything under 12volts causes starting issues with my 03 660. That buzzing is a clear sign of low voltage or “bad” connections. *Good connection+Good Ground+Good Battery=starter engagement*. Try using a battery booster/Charger. Something that can boost the cranking amps up just so you can try to start it with the electric start button. I’ve been the cheaper route with off-brand,lower cost batteries and found that they do not last long and won’t hold 12v after using them for a few months. I went back to an OEM ATV battery and haven’t had an issue for several years now.

Paul Govensky definitely check all your connections, relay and even though you replaced the solenoid some have loose connections where the fuses are plugged into the solenoid. If your jumping the solenoid and starting your machine, then somewhere in the system you not making a connection to complete the circuit to engage the starter. Jumping the solenoid just bypasses all the other stuff and sends the current straight to the starter.

Sounds like a lot of diagnosing is about to take place. Time to get your multi meter out a start checking for 12volts to everything, especially when trying to start it. I hope you find the culprit.

J. Chrimany.. Unhook your positive battery post first. You would avoid the danger and burns
@joecorrie15 жыл бұрын
when ever unhooking a battery you take the ground off first and when reconnecting the batt you put the ground on last, if you take the positive off first and your wrench touches any metal it will arc and could short the electrical system out.

Where is the fuse in the starter relay
@MichaelEd6 жыл бұрын
They are on each side of the relay, where you connect the cables. There are two fuses.

That’s not good. I wonder is something is crossed-up, grounding out or connected backwards.

My positive cable gets hot when I try to start it up. Hot where it runs to the starter solinoid New solinoid
@MichaelEd4 жыл бұрын
Are you jumping the solenoid? Check your connections, is the proper gauge battery cable being used? Unless your trying to start it for long periods of time, it’ll get hot after awhile if your trying to start it with out success.
@appelmac14 жыл бұрын
Michael Ed No I am not jumping it yet. Just using the starter button on handle bar. Put new solenoid in and new starter. Still just clicking and hearing starter click

Michael Ed does it have a compression release when starting that may be failing?
@edwinortiz69554 жыл бұрын
What if it just turn over that all
@MichaelEd4 жыл бұрын
Edwin Ortiz if it just turns over and not start? I’d check for spark at your plug and wire. If that’s good, check to make sure your getting fuel.
@edwinortiz69554 жыл бұрын
Michael Ed I tried your method and i leave it there it just turn over
@MichaelEd4 жыл бұрын
Edwin Ortiz so which method did you try? Method in video? Method in the reply to your first comment? There are many variables as to why your machine is not starting. What make/model atv are you working on? If you can spin the motor via the electric start button or jumping the starter relay, you’ve got other issues to solve. Have you check your spark plug? Is it getting spark when your trying to crank it? Are you getting fuel to the cylinder? Do you have compression in the cylinder?
@edwinortiz69554 жыл бұрын
I have a grizzly 660 2002 I tried to jump it like you did in the video but when I do that I want to turn on but it doesn’t turn on it also has a new battery
@MichaelEd4 жыл бұрын
Edwin Ortiz so when you jump the relay, the starter spins the motor , but does not run, just spinning over without cranking. Correct?
