Really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to the follow-up. I'd love to see you repair more CRTs. I have a couple of high-end PC monitors I would have liked to send you for free. Unfortunately, not really feasible to ship across the Atlantic.

The one thing I never worked on and never will, CRT computer monitor. Why? Too much shielding to deal with and monitors were cheap. The amount of time needed to disassemble and reassemble put the price into the not worth repairing catagory. Most people have the standard 14 or 15-in monitors and when you could buy a new one for $199 nobody was going to spend $150 to $200 to fix an old one so into the bin they went. Yes monitors were that cheap here I've got several that I bought brand new for a couple hundred bucks. I've still got a 19 inch I think I paid $350 for and I've got a 21 inch sitting in my storage locker that was given to me that as far as I know it works but hasn't been turned on in well probably 25 years

There's good money in the higher end ones these days, but I can totally understand not wanting to mess with them. The shielding is one of the reasons I haven't tried myself. It just feels bad to throw them out.@@12voltvids

In the UK this is the EVS9000E. Lower display failure is usually the capacitors in the DC-DC converter can. Not too hard to fix as long as they have not rotted out the PCB. Replacing every capacitor on the TBC takes a while but generally fixes that. Some of the PSU capacitors need to be low ESR types so I use them throughout. Spool table failure is a real problem, both sides. I am now getting mass capacitor failure on the main boards of these, common faults include: terrible picture, capstan servo loss, jumping into FM stereo mode with mono tapes causing a horrible noise (had that several times now and I don't know exactly where the fault lies). At the moment, not one of my fleet of five EVS9000E machines is fully working, and I'm afraid they are all at end of life.

I have an EVS9000 which is the Euro/PAL version of this machine, in perfect mechanical working order. There were some picture faults such as a thin line that tracked slowly down the screen, but in different places every time the same tape was played, and sometimes even in Stop mode. So I resoldered the capacitor joints in the power supply (after checking for any leaked liquid around them) and that fault went away. Note that the PSU block design is different to the EVS1000 where the whole PSU metal case comes out in one piece after undoing a couple of screws. With the EVS7000 & EVS9000 you just take the lid off the metal case and pull the PCB out leaving the metal case behind. But I still have some picture faults at high contrast points, where there are black streaks as if the heads have worn. Do you think it may be possible to turn down the head preamp gain (and raise the output gain if necessary) to reduce this problem? Or, can you suggest anything else to check? Thanks!

capacitor capstan/drum squeal ~ what a classic btw , the reel gears seem to match either ccd-f or ccd-tr or ccd-fx cameras , you can interchange them. i recommend looking into that. fixed my ccd-vx3 that way

The reels on these are completely different from any other model. They are magnetic. Every other model used a felt pad for the torque limiting. Cameras used optical rotation sensors. This one magnetic as well. The reel tables are 2 part assemblies. Top has a magnet and the gear base has a thin steel plate that is held a few microns from the magnet on the top part of the hub. The magnetic field passing through is what sets the tape tension and is also picked up by the hall effect device under it for rotation detection. Believe me I've looked at every real table off of every scrap camera and every one is different. This was used on evs5000 and 7000 only. The 2000 and 3000 used different gears. These machines were an over priced piece if shit when they came our and my dhr1000 DV deck is looking like it's a piece of shit too because something broke in it. It won't load tapes anymore. It will be a work in progress to get that one going again.

Hey Dave, Do you think the older decks were better quality? I have a Sony EV-S700PAL looks and work like new. Has the wrap around U mechanism like Beta. Also have an NTSC EV-S500 that too is working great. Enjoying recording digital music to Video 8 too plus I have a heap or original video 8 movies.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 7 ай бұрын
Yes the older umech was more reliable. I have one. Video 8 with the PCM adapter. As far as high 8 goes the evs3000 is the one to have. It has PCM audio and tbc but the tbc needs the same work. All the caps fail. The evo9800 industrial hi8 was a good one used the u loading like beta and Umatic. M loading became the standard as it allowed a more compact mechanism

squeal from drum or capstan usually (not in this case?) indicates that the 33uf or other caps around the brushless driver ic's are bad .. guess u got lucky on this one lack of loading action usually means the filtercaps of the servo controll ic are messed up

on aecond thought if its not loading and its not the caps , i HAS to be the mode switch .. seen it so many times on ccd-f seried tape chassis's

This one uses pin switches. Completely different mechanism than any other VCR or camera. One of these days I'll do a year down of my old 5000 as it's a parts wrecker these days. It's in my locker.

Well look at it this way. Not making any money on this one but the machine is donated in leiu or diagnostic fee so now it's mine and I will spend as much time as needed to get this up and running as my 7000 has been issues that i will have to deal with on yet another video. I am doing multiple parts on these as opposed to al long video as that translates into more views and more views means more ad revenue. Since the average view time is 12 to 15 minutes that's the target to try to hit. Most of my videos are 30 min but people skip ahead and only watch 12 on average or less so making a long one doesn't help me out. But making 2 or 3 short videos on a device covering specific faults with a part 2 covering additional problems translates into longer overall viewing of a specific repair. Anyone that has ever slept through one of carlsons 2 hour marithon videos will know what I am talking about. I know where this comment I'm going to hear people replying to this saying how they like the long format and how they want to see every little thing that's done but those people are in the minority because the stats show completely different the stats show 10 to 15 minutes is what people are looking for so I'm going to try to keep them a little shorter maybe going to 20 minutes or so but definitely well under 30 minutes. if I see a video starting to get a little bit long in the tooth rather than continue on I will just end it and pick it up with a second part.
