What a kind and thoughtful gift. Somebody remembered how heartbroken you were when the old one failed for such a minor component. My faith in humanity just went up by 1 point. (and this week it's nearly reached negative numbers.. so absolutely required to keep me from swearing at next door's cat for no reason)

Kudos to whoever sent you it, obviously greatly appreciated. Reminds me of my Dick Smith iron I bought in 1978 while at college. It was on the bargain table as faulty. I ended up replacing the barrel, op amp, and two zeners as the thermocouple had shorted to the heating element sending 22V AC into the op amp. Still much cheaper than a new one and still going today.

The iron you had in you had at 9:36 that the tips can't get tight. You could try using a flaring tool on that tip holder on the flared end carefully, or add a tiny lock washer to the tip ridge. Also whenever working with plastic and screws, turn the screw backwards till you feel or hear it click into the right groove, then screw it in. Else you will jam it or cut another thread into that plastic eventually making it a useless plastic that will not get tight or crack off the plastic stud column.

The joys of children. Last summer i watched my autistic son (non verbal 7 year old) stop on his kick scooter behind a neighbors older mini cooper and try to push the rear window wiper up. Something snapped inside followed by the plastic housing also cracking. I was a few feet behind and even though i yelled "stop, dont touch" it was too late. That was a hundred dollar part and i supplied the labor. Thank you for the video going over that weller. Ill keep my eye out for one.

I have the Weller WCPN iron wth the magnetic tips you mention. This has been a workhorse for me for over 40 years. Tips and heating elements are still available from DigiKey. Temperature is marked on the magnet (6 or 7) for 600 or 700 F. Like you had said in an earlier video the iron holder for these older irons works great. It’s a simple but reliable setup that I hope keeps going for many more years.
@12voltvids2 жыл бұрын
Yeah we had a couple of the magnetic tip irons at the shop. I think there was two of them and then mine that I brought in. In the last couple years when I was at the shop by myself and there was no other text working with me I just used the stuff that was at the shop because my cheap ass boss would make me pay for the replacement tips for my iron. once he started deducting the cost of the tips for my iron that I would order from my paycheck I took my iron home and let him supply them. Again I could write a book on some of the shenanigans that went on at that place for 20 years that I was there even down to the straw that broke the camel's back when I walked out in 2003 but I won't. At least not yet someday maybe I'll open up on some of the ongoings. I'm not only because the former owner it's still around his ex-wife is still around and one of his sons still around his other son passed away couple years ago of a brain tumor unfortunately.

The soldering iron being one of your most important tools, I've often wondered why you have never purchased a used "Ferrari" rather than use a "Corvette". I've used various Weller, Hakko, and other units over the years, but none have even come close to the Metcal system I used when I was at Texas Instruments. I currently have a Metcal PS-2E power supply using an MX-RM3E wand, with a selection of tips. This setup cost several thousand dollars when it was new, but a whole setup is currently on eBay for $125 including several tips! It heats up within a few seconds, has excellent thermal mass(depending on the tip you use), and most importantly, the end of my tips is only about two inches from the end of my hand, offering very precise control...

That’s a wicked package to show up randomly at your door. In the future, can’t recommend the Hakko 951 enough. Like your sequre, every tip has its own element and thermocouple. Takes T12 tips like the sequre as well but with a proper transformer as opposed to a smps
@12voltvids2 жыл бұрын
The sequre can run on anything. Battery, transformer, smps. All it cares is it gets 12-24v.

@@12voltvids I can’t disagree, I use a ts100 for mobile work and I love it, I got it so I could bring my 951 tips with me, also obviously the input flexibility. Not quite as modern as the sequre but you can definitely tell where sequre got their inspiration.

Nice gift! You're a lucky guy... These old Weller irons were top quality and technology then, and they costed a lot. But when you choose such tool, you expect they last forever... I still use daily my Weller EC2002, basically the same with a black controller and reinforced antistatic protection . Also bought in 1986, I've only replaced 2 tips and sponge. However, I think you should replace the iron cord, wich seems in pretty bad shape. If you still have your original iron, a swap could be possible, if not too short!

Yotec 936P is a Clone of Hakko 936-12 (1990s).. which was improvement of Hakko 926 (1980s) - a Japanese copy of Weller’s EC-1000 Analog Dial station (1977-2003). Weller used Resistive Heaters; Ungar (Weller acquired 1996) used Ceramic heaters. Hakko used CERAMIC Heaters (Japanese gov’t and auto industry spent $1 billion on Ceramic Research in 1990s for ICE and Heating appliances.) CHINA can NOT build Handpiece heaters as good as the Japanese. No Research, Have not yet stolen skill set. Many Hakko 936 CLONES, actually buy Hakko Heaters in their Product !! Weller’s EC-1002 revision 3 station was last model (1996-2003) - great control board (No ceramic, Non illuminated Carling power rocker).

Cool!! My first “good” soldering iron was one of the Magnestat Wellers. I retired it as it was old when I got it; one day I looked down at it and the tip was glowing red. I used the power supply with a new iron from Weller and that after a few months stopped damn heating up. I changed to a digitally controlled Hakko as it was what was in stock at our now defunct local electronics part shop in my home town in England UK (Maplin). I learnt proper technique with my Wellers and would happily change to one of theirs again if I needed to replace the Hakko. So glad to see you have your preferred tool back on the bench. It’s surprising how much different tools can change how we approach a job, even if the existing ones do actually work right. To reiterate again, though, Magnestat sucks.

The EC200x is a Weller EC series (1977-2003) station. That is the early EC-1201 soldering iron (hand piece), 1977-early 1980s. IT IS REPAIRABLE.
@12voltvids2 жыл бұрын
When my original iron broke I went to the local parts shop where I bought all my tips from in the past and they told me that the heater was no longer available. This was inaccurate it was just that they were no longer a well or dealer and didn't bother to tell me that instead they sold me a new iron. So by 1200 sat for years and years never could find a replacement iron for it wasn't so much the iron 80 that was just the heater that plugs into the end of the iron. When I completely left the business in 2003 I just put it away and forgot about it and I didn't do any electronic repair work for about 10 years. I did build my workbench, I built that workbench the year I left the shop as I figured I would go in business and start working out of my house but I never did and it was more just a tinker with stuff and pile a bunch of crap on. It wasn't until I started doing the KZbin videos that I realized I needed a good iron and I bought that cheapo hakko knock off which has been okay over the years had to be calibrated as it was way off temperature wise but once I got it set up it actually worked out quite well. Always wanted my ec1200 fixed and tried to find a replacement not just the heater this point but the entire iron as the handle was missing. It's probably around here somewhere and at some point I will probably find it but now I have another complete unit so I'm happy. Just have to find some more tips. Perhaps a trip to the parts store today is an order to get a few different tips for it.

Well this one was in use every day all day long for close to 20 years. I remember bringing it home in the last couple years that I was at the shop because my cheap ass boss refused to buy tips for it. I could use his iron in order a new tip every week if I wanted no problem but if I ordered a tip for my iron he would take it out of my paycheck. Same goes for batteries if I put a battery in his fluke meter the store paid for it if I put a battery in my fluke meter that was sitting on my bench at the shop I had to pay for the battery. Just a way that my old boss was just being a cheap ass didn't matter that he was making 60% or more on the repair. It was so bad that if I needed a new blank VHS tape for testing equipment in the back I was expected to pay for the tape even though it was a tape being used by the shop to repair customers machines. I could tell stories about that hell hole that I worked at but I won't. the guy that owned the shop even though it's long gone it's still around. Maybe someday after I read his name in the obits we can have that discussion about how difficult the place that I worked at for 20 years was to work there.
