Makes me wish there was an archive online of IR codes. Just like we do for manuals, floppies, CDs, etc. People would just contribute by recording patterns for each button of their OEM remote.

There is an outfit out of Florida that does custom remotes to replace lost or broken OEM units. You just input the make and model of the device the remote is for, and the site finds the appropriate remote for you to order. I believe it's called Electronic Adventures, or something like that.

There is one problem here also - and that is such that many 'House Label brands - and even the more common low cost brands use one of the five TV manufacturers in CHINA - where a particular device - such as a TV will have the same model number and appearance - yet use a different motherboard and a different RC { Remote Control } with totally different CODES. So even when one purchases a replacement RC for a specific model device -- there is no guarantee that the RC will function correctly with that device --- and for those that are not aware of this - it leads them to false assumption that the RC is in some way faulty. Either the RC will not control the device -or- the buttons have functions that do not correspond to the label. ^^ With the lower price devices it is advisable to purchase a RC that has pre-programmed codes of various devices ( though NOT all devices are represented) -or- purchase a ' RC ' that can be user-programmed by reading the codes off of the original RC. I have a few boxes full of Remote Controls - either found by the roadside among dumped household goods placed there for Local Government collection - during clean-up days -or- RC's that were found at Trash-&-Treasure markets and Garage Sales. Useful for technicians -- However cataloging and storing the RC's and then searching for them when needed - is often time-consuming ---- something that common people fail to understand the complexity of it and time-resources that have a value.

@@andrew_koala2974 That's a difficulty, not a problem. That just increases the number of remotes that will need to be recorded. A simple analogy: Think of universal remotes that have you try multiple codes for the same brand until you find one that works. And yes sometimes none works. No database is ever complete and absolutely exhaustive. It takes time to gather data.

I use inexpensive rechargeable NiCd and NiMH solar light AA batteries in my remotes. Less likely to leak, and with the remotes being low drain, the batteries typically last well over a year before they need to be recharged, even factoring self-discharge. The solar light NiCd batteries I'm using are getting old (must be 12-15 years old) and are starting to self-discharge faster, I don't see those in stores much anymore, it's all NiMH now. The rechargeable AAA batteries I'm using are Ikea "LADDA" NiMH's, they last a long time and have very low self-discharge rates.

I regularly work with backing up VHS recordings to digital format, and when looking for a VCR I always try to find one that comes with an original remote, or one that I already have a remote for (perhaps the same model as the one that died but the remote still works). The reason is that many VCRs will go into an auto setup mode when first powered up, where it tries to tune in analog channels and set the clock. Without the remote, there's no way to get out of this screen! I currently have two Sanyo VCRs, only one of which has a remote. The remote WILL operate the second VCR so I can get out of the auto setup mode, but I can't do anything like index search, manual tracking adjustment or resetting the tape counter without the proper remote for that VCR.

Same isn't true here in the states unfortunately. I've tried basically all of the local store brands, and if they don't leak, they have stupid low capacity and don't last long. The price difference isn't all that different either between them and the name brands. I've just stopped buying non-rechargeable batteries entirely where I can, and get rechargeables. They're way more expensive, but pay for themselves in just a few recharge cycles and last years. I have some rechargeable batteries that are 5-10 years old and still hold a useful charge and haven't leaked.

Or maybe selecting 'remaining space' title (as opposed to the 'recorded' title) and then pressing OK. Because selecting 'recorded title' should bring up a sub-menu with options for the titles, going back from that should allow access to the 'Disc Menu', with finalize, unfinalize, format, etc. As 'simple' to use as a calculator they aren't. I found an old Motorola AM radio that took 4 D cells that had leaked. Damn D cells are getting spendy considering they are made for flashlights of old. So I cleaned it up, hooked it to my power-supply and it worked great on 5 volts. So I had some batteries from an old cell phone that broke and I replaced, I added a little charger, just glued it to the battery then hooked a little boost board that boosted the 3.4 volts up to 5 and the radio works pretty good for local stations, however the boost converter puts out some high frequency noise that the antenna picks up very well and sounds horrid on the radio. I am thinking that I will put the converter into an aluminum case that I have about the right size and perhaps that will quiet it down. Alternately I am considering adding another 3.4 volt cell and running it through a 7806 to drop it down to the proper voltage. Could be that the radio might run on 8 volts but I would be afraid of blowing some old part with the over voltage. Perhaps a couple of diodes in line to drop it down would do the job as well.

Ah the need for the right remote to access the functions, yes that is a issue. Most people that have cable TV or a dish and a universal remote will loose or throw out their original remotes or park them in a drawer and then the batteries rot them out, when they need them for some operation, they are dead.. I partly blame our society, a throw it away society, and the universal remote MFG's to do it all, but really it is maybe all but really with many limitations. The CD door/drawer getting stuck is often a old belt that has a stiff loop in it from setting in one position for too long. Replace the door/drawer belt and the problem should be gone. The other problem I have found with the ones with a built in 5 channel sound system is that the cooling is not enough and the sound amp chips burn out. Add another laptop cooling system under the unit and be sure it is open enough to breath and it should not die, or find a better cooling solution for that area inside the unit..

Those USB flash drives, especially the cheap ones, suffer from bit rot if not periodically powered up. The internal controller periodically refreshes the cells. If this is not done regularly, the cells in flash chip lose their charge, corrupting the data. I've had good luck over the years with the Sandisk USB drives. The hold time should be several years but I've seen the cheapies start losing dara in a matter of months.

Simple, no subsidized phones. I get a discount on my phone bill as employee but only my phone otherwise it would be the same as the phone my wife uses. When you supply your own phone and do not fall for the great deal on the latest greatest phone there is room to work with the plan. I did however pay 1200 for my phone 5 years ago and am still using the same phone. Wifes LG died and of course the shop says hey we can get you you a new phone for 80 bucks a month on the "tab" No thanks, whats the cheapest phone you got. Motorola for 240, great I'll take it thanks. Put my sim card in and good to go. What people don't understand is that fancy phone is as much as 2500.00 these days. Even when company is selling it for 500, the balance is paid back over the duration of the term. Used to be 3 years here but people pressured government and they forced companies to reduce the term to 2 years so now phone has to be paid back 1 year sooner, so bills went up. Supply your own phone and there are deals to be had. We both only get 3 gigs a month data which for people that live on their phone is probably not enoough but I have never even gotten close to 3 gigs. Most I ever did in 1 month was 2.1. These are old plans, and grandfathered into the rate plan unless I change plans. Cell stores try like hell to get me to change because they make big commission to sign people up.
