Great Television comes from great characters, and as proven by both Breaking Bad‘s Walter White and Better Call Saul‘s Saul Goodman (aka Slippin’ Jimmy), Vince Gilligan is nothing short of a genius when it comes to creating the unlikely hero. Coupled with an acute sense of tone and timing, it’s no wonder that the rise and demise of these characters lend themselves to some of television’s greatest success. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Breaking Bad and the highly anticipated season four premiere of Better Call Saul, TV Camp revisits the episode that sparked the spin-off prequel - Breaking Bad season two’s “Better Call Saul” - followed by a conversation with executive producer Vince Gilligan and star Bob Odenkirk as they discuss collaboration, character inception, and their creative journey across the two series.
Panelists: Vince Gilligan & Bob Odenkirk
Moderator: Sarah Rodman (Entertainment Weekly)

the 1st half of BCS, has been a different show than Breaking Bad. But imo just as good. Now that the timeline is getting closer to the Walter White era, the intensity is increasing. So all you adrenaline junkies should be more pleased with BCS seasons 4 and 5. Cinematically speaking BCS has been better since day 1. I loved the tension between Jimmy and Chuck. But now we'll see more of the Albuquerque drug trade, and all of those characters. I've never been bored with this show. But I understood early on that Vince and Peter would take there time and build the backstory for every important piece of the total tale. Just like they did in the 1st couple of seasons with Breaking Bad. People forget how painful the suspense building was on BB. But the writers always made sure to payoff the viewers patience and attention. Just like they've done on BCS.

How do you feel about BCS now that it's over? Some of the best storytelling ever.

I was already wondering when we were going to see one of Jimmy's three ex wives, but it sounds like the writers haven't come up with any stories for them yet.

Saul has a flare for the dramatic, is it so hard to assume he made those wives up for a story with a lesson?

It seemed a bit jarring how relatively quickly they got rid of the Chuck character. He was such a strong addition to the story. And now I worry that Kim will get the boot soon, too. That will be a huge loss. If the show becomes all about the crime stories, I'm out.

see i thought they took their time with chuck. He could've been around for 1 more season at most

He was there three entire seasons + flashbacks in S4. That's well over half the run of the show, and him dying is the primary catalyst for Saul's true turn to darkness.

Haha Kim most certainly did NOT get the boot. One of the best characters ever.
