"Au 31 du mois d'août" - French sailor's song

"Au 31 du mois d’août" (On the 31st of August) is a French sailors song and a drinking song. It was written in the 19th century and is inspired by the capture of the "Kent" (a British Three-Masters) by the famous privateer Robert Surcouf and his crew aboard "La Confiance" (corvette). The exploit lies in the difference of the forces in presence, the English being more numerous, with more guns of better manufacture.

Kent was only a merchantman, not a fighting ship, and the crew were not very well equipped with weaponry; but despite that it was still a very impressive boarding and capture given the size and cannon differences.

"Capture of the Kent" is the name of the painting made by Ambroise Louis Garneray. It depict the capture of the "Kent" by Surcouf.

These lyrics are not meant to be interpreted literally, the King refers to France, not really the regime in power. Moreover, the song was written during the 19th century, the event of the song took place in 1800 (under Republic and Empire), and its painting is from 1836 (under July Monarchy). I guess there may have been adaptation in the song and the representation.

The French navy is still called "La Royale", because it stayed royalist even under the Revolution, Directoire and Empire. The Revolutionnaries in Paris didn't dare to remove them from their offices because they were heavily needed against the Royal Navy in those troubled times. But they remained loyals to France even under all those governments.
