PS - If you're wondering why my videos will always be in English, the answer is simple: more people in the world speak English than Dutch. I want this channel to be accessible and understandable for as many people as possible.

Good luck with the Au Pair. If she's willing too, I'd love to see a video with her sharing her experiences after she's been here for several month. Perhaps combined with the mutual cultural experiences.

Lately you've really radiated energy and genuine happiness, and just looking really good and healthy in general, and as a long-time viewer it's really nice to see! That's not to say you didn't look good and healthy before, lol, that's not what I mean. It's just that I get the impression that your recent life changes have had a positive impact in general :) As an expat who has made the opposite journey - from Europe to the US - I find your channel very interesting because a lot of the things you talk about I can relate to, but in reverse, lol. Thank you for uploading and letting us take part in your life and all your impressions of The Netherlands.

We had a live-in babysitter (Nancy) from Kentucky who stayed with us for 3 years, the 4th year (2020) was 'interrupted' due to the pandemic and school (John Hopkins University) closures. We had a law firm draw up a contract for us (they probably used some boiler template). However the costs were much higher at our end, totaling around $2000 a month, but that includes benefits like healthcare /w dental and we provided her with a reliable car that she could not only use to go to school, but also to drive the kids around... But technically she was on call 24/7 with the exception of her school/study hours and other scheduled events. After the 3rd pregnancy (2021) my girlfriend decided to become a stay at home mom and only helps out in my company when she has time. We do have a separate housekeeper (since 2014) that visits 4 times a week to tidy up the place. We interviewed about 20 students for the position of a live-in nanny. After a while we had two final applicants and we did a trial weekend with the both of them. Weird thing was that before the trials runs we weren't really sure if Nancy would be a best fit, but it just clicked. Because you are leaving your child(ren) alone with basically a stranger, trust is a important part of the hiring process and was the part that I had the most trouble with. Bringing your kid to daycare is very different from choosing someone to actually come live with you and become part of the family. At some point I became aware that I watch too many horror movies. It's like watching 'Turbulence' just a few days before you're flying ;-)

I've used a bakfiets to pick up my kids from school for a year now and it was rare that it actually rained when I needed to pick up the kids maybe 10 to 15 times in the entire school year.

When was a student in Belgium, my girlfriend was an au pair from South Africa and she originally started with her host family living in the Netherlands and then her host family moved to Belgium, while she was with them.

If Au Pairs would be treated as normal workers and employer- family actually facilitate a cultural experience throughout the period of employment the programs would be nice. Most people today don't do anything for the au pair.

Great video. Would really appreciate more information about child care and support after school for school going kids. Likely that our family will be in NL from November and kids are aged 8 and 12.

Just to give a headstart there are multiple child care options. - BSO it's after school care for children. Mostly it's close by the schools or sometimes even in schools. Someone from the BSO come to pick the kids up after school if it's not there. - a Nanny works the same as in any other country I think - a Guestparents (I don't know the exact english word for it, this is the exact translation gastouder). They are qualified / educated to care for the children. There can be an agency (which also protects you that the caretakers are required to have a certificate for good conduct (which means that they're not convicted criminals etc) and they'll provide the contract. - an Aupair which she explained It of course depends a little bit what your salary, your working schedule is. What activities your children are going to (and what times they have to be tehre) and in what city or town you live. I have to say that BSO are pretty low on staff lately (it's a bit of a problem to find staff in multiple areas in the Netherlands) so it could be that you already have to contact for some information to apply because of waitinglist. Do you already know what school they will attend, if you do it would be smart to maybe ask them for some advice as well. They know the area and the BSO better than most people here probably. I wish you and your family all the best and I hope you feel really welcome here in the Netherlands.

Hi, love the video. I have a question: my iPhone is not blocked. I plan to buy a SIM card and phone number in the NL to keep using the same iPhone. Can one do that? Which store can I go to compare different phone plan prices? TIA.

I just started watching Aupair on NPO3 where 4 Dutch people go abroad as an Aupair. The first season they wen't to LA, the 2nd it's Italy and the current season is in Miami. That had me wondering how things work here regarding aupairs and there is your video. Just finished the first season and I felt so sorry for most girls as they had to do way more and work longer hours then the law permits. But I think that happens everywhere, not saying you will ask that of them though, as it's so easy to go over the maximum hours or for aupairs to do more then they should. Maybe it's a nice watch for you. It's on NPO plus/NPO start.

How do I love this video even though there is zero usefulness for me as I'll never need an au pair? I wonder if we'll ever get to meet the Au Pair, or the husband??? Please make more au pair videos

AuPair program lasts one year: but an AuPair can change status to student status if "they" decide to study in the host country and stay with the host family for many years unless college schedule is a total mismatch...Then again, it's easier with an EU AuPair in the Netherlands: cheap college vs. high prices for non-eu students...(a former AuPair 😁)

Never had an Au pair but have had two Nanny's when the kids were primary school age and I was recently divorced, The first was OK for about a year, until I came home during the day to collect something, I heard noises coming from her room and assuming she was out as the kids were at school, normally she would be watching the TV or eating lunch at that time, the noises must be an intruder. I crept upstairs and burst into her room to find her in bed with her boyfriend. Needless to say she was fired on the spot, if only she had asked me first, I might have consented with conditions. I didn't ask how many times she had done it before.
