Because many distillers add artificial color, you cannot rely on the color as an indicator of taste. Unless of course the box says natural color. Some very pale whisky like Caol Ila has bags of flavor.

Do distillers list if it is natural colour? We have found the labeling to be very inconsistent.

@@chasingwhisky If they say nothing, it is most likely artificially colored. The reason they add the color is that they think customers will equate darker color with a richer flavor. Of course some casks do add lots of color, for example sherry casks. But if there is a clear statement that it has natural color it is because the distillery is proud of the fact. It will most likely not be chill filtered either.

The American Oak is the worst of the range. Not a fan at all. I often see it discounted because it sells badly. Currently $26 in SA. Try the 12 year old instead.
