I'm in the process of doing a 1979 50cc Motobecane restore/modify build. Prior to 1978 they were all 6v, mine is 12v. Super cool variator drive engine. These are the best mopeds out there. If you can find them buy them! With a new 70cc cylinder head and bigger carb it will do 60mph! Good luck, Cheers from Colorado

Well the Mobylette brought back memories and so did the Puch Maxi , the Mobylette was owned by my dad and I drove the neighbours up the wall riding it up and down our drive ,the Puch was my first moped after they put the min age up to 17 , found out by taking the air cleaner off it it would rev and rev down hill instead of " four stroking " great vid good luck with the Moby , quite rare now .

Hi Martin, great vid. Mobylettes are notorious for ignition problems, try replacing the condenser. They tend to crap out first as they overheat due to being attached to an especially hot part of the motor, so people often externally mount replacements. Also the yellow Novi coils are usually pretty suspect, and a lot of mobylette guys use two earth straps to the coil just to be sure. If all that doesn't work replace the points even if they seem ok, as they usually aren't. Nice bike tho, let me know when you want rid, I'm just up the road near Newark. Looking forward to the next episode, and you've inspired me to start powder coating so thank you

Martin, you are a great guy! I have one of these bikes (to go with many other basket case mopeds, motor bikes and quads), similar model, bought dirt cheap as a box of bits but now with the same problem you show here. I'll be delighted to see how you undoubtably will get this one up and running again, many thanks for sharing, from that old Geezer in Ireland.

I also would look at the stator. The generator has a permanent magnet, which might loose magnetic force after years of not being used. You could try to re-magnetise the magnet or eg put a dc current on the coil of the magnet when the engine runs. If the ac output voltage is higher, you know this is the problem ....

Your Puff Puff engine is a Triang Puff Puff train locomotive. With original rubber wheels and Triang labels. Dimensions; 44 l x 22 h x 20 w cm. The front looks to have a round metal eye just a metal rod bent in a circle. The front is black and the stack and cab roof is black too.

This is bringing back some memories, yes tinkering is what we did keeping these machines running, mine were used to get to work on and they served me well,I had them all Cazenave,Mobylette,Raleigh Runabout,Raleigh Wisp, later I had a Puch great machines and easy to maintain, that ignition system was pretty standard under Motorbecane licence, this could be the coil breaking down as 2v seems a bit low, perhaps degraded inside the coil ? points would pit up badly and I used a points file to dress them up every few weeks, biggest problem as these are two strokes by the way is the quality of oil, garage two stroke soon furred the plugs up and a bed would form in the spark plug, answer was Molydeium oil ( remember Molyslip ?) never had any problems after that,I think it was 20 to 1 ratio. Timing should be fairly easy as there is an indent mark when piston is at TDC. Great project I feel as if I am there with you in your workshop ! that will gleam when you are finished.

Great find Martin, after a deep clean , it just needs ' conserving ', far more interesting in ' oily rag ' state as most owners like to find them like that .You can join the National Autocycle Club and there are many social runs for these sort of bikes which are a real laugh and there are ones in your part of the world .Most owners tend to be ' hands on ' people like yourself who can fix them and sort them if you get a break down on the side of the road !.I see it is still registered still with the DVLA as last registered in February 1987 so a replacement log book at a cost of £25 should be no problem to make it road legal and now MOT exempt.A friend had a P6 Rover 2000- ANR 508K which is an old Leicester series.Good luck with it and hope to see it running soon .Love your videos and presentation !.

The 6 volt is only for the light. The ignition is a complete different circuit . It consists of the ignition coil, contact breaker, condenser and the coil near the points where the current is created. If you cleaned the points and check the points will open, useally it will give a spark. Sometimes the condenser is bad in old machines. When you are a little brave you can feel the wire that goes to the ignition coil and turn by hand the magnet (crankshaft)first slowly and little by little quicker. If you feel nothing at all, something inside is not o.k. Once i had a problem, when the engine was cold it runs, when hot it stopped. Reason was the condenser. When trying the ignition, always be shure the lights are off.

You should be getting 6v from the magneto, but there may be an engine on/off switch at the handle bar. Also if the headlight or taillight are blown the engine will not run. There are some good wiring diagrams online, just do a quick search and I'm sure you'll find something. The 6v mopeds can be tricky. Good luck!

Have you had a chance to dig any deeper into the Motobecane? Once I have time I'm going to build myself a powder coat cabinet like you made. Perfect for moped restore/modify builds. I've been keeping an eye out for the right size cabinet, one big enough to hang a moped frame in. Maybe a tall, 4 drawer cabinet? Remove the drawers and fabricate a door, etc. I think that would work quite well.

Great video Martin. I used to have to turn the throttle all the way forward for the decompressor to work, the little handle on the left handlebar is the choke. Check the wire from the coil back into the magneto also clean up the faces of the coils inside the magento (one is for lights the other ignition) I had a raleigh runabout years ago with the same problem. Ii could be the coil in the magneto that's failed had to change mine years ago lol. Also Martin is there a engine shut off on the handlebars ? some were fitted with a kill switch. it may be faulty.
