If you’re familiar with the Swiss watch industry, you’ll know that when a brand-particularly a big, old traditional one-does something small, it’s a pretty big deal. So when a brand does something big, its positively monumental. At the beginning of 2019, Audemars Piguet did something big by releasing the Code 11.59, with the intention of ending its reliance on the iconic Royal Oak. The response, however, was not quite the one they expected.

Let's be honest here: - movement is top notch - case is among the best we've seen (hi-tech, complicated shaped) - the domed/carved glass is also a thing of beauty The things that ruins it are: - indices and the numbers - the hands are so so plain and boring - AP logo also looks cheap These can be fixed easily, so the next versions might look a lot better.

I agree. The finishing of the movement is on par with ALS. The sapphire crystal is superb. The case is fantastic. However, the watch face is plain boring and generic. And most people mostly only see the dial.

Main reason I don't think anybody is going to buy Code 11.59 is it doesn't look iconic. Royal oak looked so different when it came and anybody can tell its royal oak because of its distinct iconic design. This however looks super mainstream like any other watch. Also I find dial's look cheap

I love this watch. The case in itself is beauty, but in brushed pink gold finish with white dial - it is impeccable. The glass with double curve effect, is like a signature for this watch. It gives it a nautical look. A hint of 19th century ship brass compasses, instrument, but distinguished.

This watch is a beauty, and I'd love to own it. With that said, had I not watched the video on the Grand Seiko Snowflake and the Lange Saxonia Thin, I would probably have thought the AP faultless. But after seeing the beautiful finishing of the Grand Seiko and the Lange, my eye started seeing fine details on the AP that didn't quite reach the same level of finish at the other two. The hands, there were some fine specks along the edges that looked like tiny gouges (which would only show up under magnification, but still). Then reversing the watch, I was seeing the same kind of tiny imperfections on a number of the parts. Part of this results from the brushed surface of many parts, the tiny groves creating a break along the edges. Then there were the gears. Look at the Lange in particular. The teeth of the gears were polished! That tiny attention to detail elevates the Lange to another level. Same with the beveled edges of the movement, no specks or other imperfections of any kind under the magnification of the video. The Audemars is an expensive luxury watch, but the Lange really is on top of its game. Still, a beautiful watch though.

I still think the name is ***** but the watch really seems to deliver up close. The at first glance industrial finish turns out to be an absolute stunner! Also the small design details are really great. If AP would have released such a video during their presentation the public perception would have been much better for sure!

@@marcd7332 from the top down for sure, which is the angle most watches will be viewed from when worn throughout the day. I appreciate the curved crystal, the Octagonal nod to the royal oak in the middle of the case, the skeletonsized lugs, etc...however, you bring up a valid argument, that it all gets lost in the simplistic appearance of its primary viewing angle. Perhaps this is meant for a specific audience that really just want to lose themselves in the details of what they wear as opposed to projecting a very obvious statement on their wrist? Whatever the case may be, I believe there will be buyers here. This video definitely highlights this watch in ways AP themselves did not in their own unveiling.

8.58 in the presentation says it all.... "I'm a firm believer in your opinion being own!" We all reflect our own biases and thoughts. I find the 11.59 to be absolutely stunning. I am reminded of a very wise friend who states "It's sophistication is hidden in its simplicity". I read and respect everyone's opinions on this channel - but should I have the money I would buy this watch to go alongside GS Spring Drive, Omega DV Centre Tourbillon, Kobold LSD. I kinda disagree.. these high end brands have done it before. The Royal Oak is one, but nautilus was unpopular when it launched. So was the aquanaut. Best example might be the Rolex Daytona. @centrallyintelligentagency
@centrallyintelligentagency 4 жыл бұрын
Brad Le Brad Le I see the point about the Neptune - sure. The moonphase version of it is very pretty, however. The Franck Muller started popular as you conceded - so that point is relatively moot. The Hallucination may not be visually appealing, but I doubt that that was the problem. It’s sitting at $55,000,000 which I would be inclined to call prohibitive. An 11.59 is not. Also, it’s the Panerai Brooklyn Bridge - and it was set to be a scandal. Priced lower than a 005 and with a terrible movement, of course it was bound to fail - not a great example. This 11.59 is disregarded for no compelling reason I have yet to hear - it is technically a marvel, and it insanely elegant in the minute repeater & perpetual calendar guise, but my favourite is the standard time-only in black and rose gold. A final counter to any opposition - until you have genuinely handled the piece and can appropriately speak to that experience, you have no business in judging the watch as bad, trash, or bound to be a flop. You haven’t formed an evidence based argument for why the watch is bad. Personally, I thought I would despise the Nautilus, since it was steel (for that price) and I thought it was garbage prior to handling it. Completely contrary to my ignorant opinion, it felt immensely qualitative and had a beautiful shine to its components and a very pleasant heft - not to mention the movement. Case closed.

Well done on finishing this review with the almost subliminal suggestion that the Code 11 is somehow layered and mysterious and will perhaps become the choice of those with subtle minds and refined tastes. I suspect you’ll have quite a few of these pieces second-hand which you’ll need to shift as best you can over the next coup,e of years, so a bit of marketing groundwork now won’t go amiss.

I really like it. AP’s target audience with this is a very affluent customer after a subtle dress watch with a layer of tech and touches that you can only appreciate with ownership. The quality and finishing is incredible and I would love to spend some time with one because you can only take in this level of design and quality with the piece in your hand and on your wrist. Most of the criticism is because it’s the other end of the design spectrum to the Royal Oak which is what AP wanted to achieve. My dream collection would be the newer 41mm Royal Oak and one of these 👍🏼

A lot of people say that the dial is too simple. I disagree, there's a lot going inside of it, and the proportion of the components inside the dial is the main culprit of somewhat disastrous execution. However, looking it at in flesh makes a lot of a difference. This is a 4/5 watch.

The code 11.59 story really started with the perpetual calendar where the internal bezel, dial language came together and is pure beauty. Unfortunately moving down the line to fulfill sale to the selective masses really diluted the dna. Maybe the goal here is to not follow the traditional watch brand approach of launching a lot of variations for one line but rather exercise restraint and allow the line to evolve over several years. Why is there a need to fulfill a different purpose watch for the 11.59 concept? Its a tail of marketing driving the concept rather then the concept driving the marketing. The watch presented here is probably the worst version with the case design being sufficient enough to carry the entire package when in fact as you noted the dial is probably the most important trait. The numerals seem to fit a watch designed by Porsche. In any case keep up the awesome reviews! Ur one of the best

The Code 11.59 is actually great in terms of case design, finishing and the dedicated new movement. All it takes is improving the dial design of some models.

The difference between the Royal Oak when it was presented and this 11.59 is clear. The R.O. was a totally new kind of design (with Zenith Defy family) made by Genta, it was a revolution on its own. This is just a mixture of already existing designs. We can see a bit of Polaris and fashion watches mixed together

I’m not sure anyone else has mentioned it, but this 11:59 is a copy of the Mont Blanc Timewalker line. There details that have been changed on the AP, but the basic design looks too close to not call it out. Thanks for the video, great content as usual.

This watch comes in many variants! Any where from 20k to 200kplus. White gold yellow gold rose gold etc. Automatic. Calander. Chronograph. Tourbillion. Etc. So a person has a good variety to chose from. Fair play to AP. Im looking forward to purchasing one soon.

It is gorgeous to see it in person. Its like a modern interpretation of the most royal design ever, the most posh car you'd ever own would pair perfectly with this watch with class and style.

I actually like the look of the 1159 and think it would be a nice watch in the metal. I think the immense dislike of the watch comes from how they advertised and teased the watch before it's release. With statements like "the most revolutionary watch in the industry since the royal Oak" (I may have paraphrased slightly) . I think if it had purely been released as a new collection to the brand without the bold statements then it would have been received better. The release created a lot of controversy among the collectors and now we are nearly a year since it was launched, we are still talking about it. Looks like AP won.

The 1159's lugs remind me of AP's capital letter **A** The RO was a futuristic take on a tired design in watchmaking. Everyone began designing angular cases, attractive and fresh in design at the time. The 1159 seems more of a throwback, one that I do welcome. It manages to accomplish many aspects of histrorical design, quite busy. Unfortunately, these details aren't as striking from a distance as the RO's were upon its release. In a 38mm case and no date, this would be perfect. As always, Thank you!

I love a lot of things about the watch, nice to have a leather strap, and an absolutely stunning case and movement. That being said, it desperately needs to replace the dial with something better. Once AP produces a better dial, then the watch is gonna be a beast

Great video, but you missed a trick !!! For non-horologists, whilst you were talking about the other watches in the film you should’ve shown them. This is an amazing oversight Hopefully you’ll take this on board and in future productions if hire comparing wristwatches, you might actually show them, to help all the viewers etc

I think this looks great. As someone who is tired of the Royal Oak look, i'll take the relative simplicity. I think the other comments saying this won't be another royal oak or offshore are correct, simply because there isn't really a unique visual style here.

I think this a beautiful piece personally... could do with slightly different numerals but the ones there work for sure. It presents even better with the blue dial in my opinion. The rose gold version is also a looker.

The dial and hands are the main problem areas, but they are also the easiest to re-design and fix with an updated version. It would be nice if they could up the WR to 100m too.

So, this watch is Indeed beautiful. It's finished to a superb level, but it doesn't feel like something new. Definitely something different for AP, but not different for the industry and that might represent a problem.

It’s a lovely watch. I suspect if this was not an AP people would love it more. It has the beautiful simplicity and elegance of the Explorer and the Submariner. It suits casual and formal. The public’s expectations were of something breathtaking and ground breaking. They received something timeless and beautiful. Sounds pretty good to me.

People with more money than sense tend to forget what defines luxury: less is more, elegance. Timeless values IMO. I appreciate it's purity and its message in a messy world of bling, noise and tasteless fashion. Well done AP for once again breaking the mould.
