I work on a lot of VAG models and regarding the "sevice" light it depends on how long it has been on for and also if it has been set for long life servicing. Sometimes you can be lucky so it's worth a try. A VAG scanner isn't actually necessary as any "decent" scanner will do it.

Thank you..... & If people don't know why that SERVICE light comes on, it's to replace the "Cam Follower.".... VERY IMPORTANT, if you don't replace it, it can shatter into little metal fragments & get into your Pistons! Then an engine overhaul $3500+ Dollars!

Hi ,my trip computer (one above the odometer) just reset itself to 0 from 1987 miles,is this normal?( I might have not realised while driving if it reset at 2000 miles)

It's because you are using the trip but if you don't follow the procedure it will reset you trip try it again it will put the light out and your mileage trip will just start clocking up again.

On newer Audis, probably other VAG cars too, you need to reset via VAG-COM or similar. I tried a generic OBD computer and had to change a bit in some hex address. Can't remember which, though... But with VAG-COM, it should be straight forward I guess.

Hi Anthony - I followed your instructions but the Service is due light is still coming on and the Spanner symbol in the right hand lower display is still there. The number of kilometres and time to the next oil change shows but the Service is due light still keeps coming on. What can I do???? Thanks Dave

Dave B hi Dave is it a 2.0tdi or petrol etc if you had the engine code that would be great a few of them can only be rest using the diag tool. problem with vag group is they change it all the time heres a few others you can try. It uses the 2 buttons on the instrument cluster (the speedo/clock/tacho), they are numbered as under 1. Clock adjustment button 2. Trip odometer reset button 3. Trip odometer display The routine is as under: 1. Switch ignition off 2. Press and hold down reset button for trip odometer (2) in instrument cluster 3. Switch ignition on while button is pressed down. "Service OIL" appears in the display of the trip odometer (3) 4. Release button 5. Pull setting knob for time (1) in instrument cluster until "Service OIL" indication is reset. "- - -" appears in display (3). 6. Press reset button for trip odometer (2) again, to advance to next service event. 7. Release button. 8. "Service INSP" appears in display (3). 9. Pull setting knob for time -1- until "Service INSP" indication is reset. 10. "- - -" appears in display (3). 11. Switch ignition off. This should work. If it doesnt, try the other way around (press clock button and release after turning key and then pull trip reset button. It normally depends upon your car being a LHD or a RHD car. If your problem is sorted, let me know by dropping a note on here. Hopefully others will see it and save themselves a few quid. Last but not the least - Regularly servicing your vehicle is good for maintaining its life AND its resale value. This procedure on Audi 2000 model year onwards is now reset through the dashboard. Turn the ignition off. Press and hold reset button (Right hand one) Turn ignition on. Release button. Display shows "Service in ???? km" or "Service!" Press and hold setting knob (left hand one) Display shows " Service in 15,000 km" Release setting knob. Service reset now complete. Please remember car will show miles and not km.

Hi Anthony Thanks for all your instructions. Unfortunately nothing worked. I then phoned Audi and was advised me that " unfortunately the vehicle will have to go to a dealership for that light to be turned off and they might want to check the service has been done correctly”. I was furious as I believe Audi has gone against the Fair Trading Act and Trade Practises Act here in Australia. I had two choices - go to Audi and pay them to turn off the "Service Due" light every time the car service is due OR sell the car. My new NO AUDI vehicle arrives next week. After having Audis for more than thirty years I have decided to give them the BOOT!!! I will not tolerate being told that "Audi might want to check I have done the service correctly". I have serviced cars from the day I could pick up a 3/8" spanner correctly for my Dad when we worked on cars. I was 5 or 6 at the time and I have serviced more Audis than I care to remember, once they were out of Warranty. Audi can get STUFFED!! Regards Dave

Dave B thanks for letting me know Dave the problem is it must be set to long life services and the computer must be put on them you can adjust it to short service intervals then one of the above will work. but you are right cars are getting that way now if you dont have the software it makes it difficult for anyone to turn lights off. im an independent garage and i find it difficult at times inless i spend thousands of pounds on computers. but fair play changing the car hope you enjoy the new one good luck. I have a similar A3 in today and it can only be rest by using a diagnostic machine unfortunately some vehicles work and some do not that's the manufacturers settings from factory sorry it didn't work but you will need a garage to put it out. Tony from AK autos

Spanner light is for a fault like brake pads etc thats a video to reset service due. You may need a code reader for that
