Another great video, I would hate to think how much you have to keep spending on timing tools. I have a few myself, but only cheapos off ebay. The VAG group are a pain for the amount of different tools you need. At least Audi are not like BMW and using torque to yield bolts, I have a good collection of those. I am of the old school, if you haven't used it for five years put it one side.

Good video but I’m confused about how the cam gear location works when you have the gear bolts loose and are turning them back and fourth before locating the belt on the teeth. I would have thought the tooth location on the belt was critical? Did I miss a step in your video? 29:44
@diydaly3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, its maybe hard to see on the video but the timing pin holds the cam in place. when the 3 bolts are loose just the outer pulley is 'floating' so I doesn't effect the timing, you can do the job without slackening them bolts its just that its helps get a nice even tension all the way round..obs once the tension is on you can nip the 4 bolts up and lock the pulley to the camshaft again
@garethrees1003 жыл бұрын
Nice job , it’s always a difficult decision whether to change the small pulley and tensioner studs. I didn’t change mine when I did my A5 tdi. But as the studs were in the kit I think I should have. What’s your view ?
@diydaly3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments , much appreciated 👌 some say you should always change the studs but I don’t like to disturb them , I always have a check to see if they look ok and personally I’m happy to leave them in as long as I’m torquing the nuts to the correct settings.. I believe the issues are caused by over torquing and stressing the studs.. if over tight they vibrate and crack so I’m led to believe.. Personally I’ve done around 30-40 belts with the setup and probably only renewed 1 or 2 studs .. I’ve never had an issue yet 👌

Alright mate, new engine is on 75/76k miles and im changing belt etc Do you recommend changing the studs for tensioner and small idler?
@diydaly3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t bother with the idler stud but you need to have a good check of the tensioner stud , check the threads look good at that the new new runs on the nicely if if does I’d happily reuse it , just make sure it’s torqued correct , this main reason the studs fail is when they are over tightened.. If you need to replace the stud there’s also a torquing procedure

@diydaly3 жыл бұрын
Should be 0 +-5 when the engine is warm. You shouldn’t need to change the cam belt if it’s not due, mark the cam position with the centre bolt and slacken the 3 cam bolts. Then adjust accordingly. To retard timing turn centre bolt counter clockwise (ensuring not to loosen the bolt) or advance it clockwise. Then torque 3 bolts down and turn engine over by hand. Start engine and check reading. Repeat if still out of spec. I believe if the reading is positive it is too far advanced 👌
