I have been very interested in catch cans for my new DI vehicle. I finally found a video that went into great detail on how, beyond the obvious collection of oil/gas blow by, a catch can effects the engine system. To summarize, a catch can with a baffle only, increased crankcase pressure by a factor of 2. And a catch can with a baffle and the sintered bronze filter found in most catch cans, increases crankcase pressure by a factor of more than 4. The test was done with new catch cans. Anything that restricts the intake manifold vacuum connection to the crankcase would be expected to do this and this video proved it. I also found a video that showed oil spitting out of the oil fill cap (with cap removed) only when when a catch can was installed. I would expect that debris that collect on the baffle or brass filter would only make this worst as time goes on. This would at least increase the likelihood that any crankcase seals (main bearing, main crank, valve covers, etc.) would leak. All manufacturers void the warranty if you install one. All these videos show what a catch can collects but very few examined what damage they can cause. I will not be installing one anytime soon.

Thanks for sharing your findings - I'm glad this video helped you to make an informed decision about your setup. i have examined the engine since installing and only have good to say about it, no leaks and runs much smoother, it also has removed a ton of water vapor which overtime will ruin a lot of aspects of your engine.

@@MDBUILDS Without any doubt, catch cans do what they are designed to do. However, they do restrict the path from the crankcase to the intake and increase crankcase pressure which will reduce the amount of oil vapor and moisture that is removed from the crankcase as well as put excess pressure on the lower seals. Those are long term issues that won't show up for some time. My option would be to take that chance with a catch can or just plan on intake valve cleaning around 150k miles. To each his own but I chose the latter. BTW, while it may delay intake valve cleaning, the catch can will not collect everything and it only delays that cleaning.

What are the benefits of installing an oil catch can, and how does it help improve engine performance and longevity?

catch cans work by removing water vapor from your engine that will increase friction increasing engine longevity, im not sure about performance but overall can help the engine run better in my experience.

My audi got a bit sluggish/high idle because of cam tray vacuum leak. Does this pcv adapter plate and catch can fix problem of idle issue?

I definitely noticed a difference in idle smoothness after the install, those pcv’s go bad after time and can most definitely cause issues with how the vehicle runs.

How do u empty the catch can?

You have to unclamp it and unscrew 4 5mm allen key bolts on the catch can

Should just design unscrew it by hand turn much easier...by the way i used syringe suck it up 😅​@@MDBUILDS
