Astonishing? By what metric? In the US, It costs less than either my RS7 or R8. And if you want a Tesla, go for it. You’ll get good range specs, but hardly the fit and finish even befitting a 50k car.

I was expecting more range, but to be honest, I don't get anymore than 250 miles out of my Audi B8 S4. I find myself filling it up every week which gets annoying. If this e-Tron GT was in my price bracket, I would be ok with its 220ish mile range as I would charge it at home 99% of the time. Can't put fuel in my S4 at home!

I have a Taycan 4S with Michelin tires and I love it. It gets ~285 miles on a full charge at 75 and is very quiet and comfortable. Charging is VERY dependent on battery and ambient temperature, but even in the dead of winter with a navigation system that was broken and therefore not able to pre-heat the battery, it beat Tesla Model 3 (during the summer) cannonball EV record by 45 minutes.

I love the styling of the Audi e-tron GT RS, but for the same money I would have the much more practical Porsche Taycan Sports Tourismo 4S. It is a few tenths slower to 100 km/hr has more useable luggage area. Both are out of my price range. I've ordered a 2022 Tesla Model S Long Range which where I live in NZ is over $100,000 cheaper.

Ambient temperature of those Ionity chargers does appear to be a limiting factor. TeslaBjorn mentioned a thermometer is located in the plug or cable and letting it rest inside your car for a few minutes can trick it into thinking its warm outside and delivering more charge. Not tried it personally. But the Leeds Ionitys are flakey throughout the colder months and deliver slower speeds despite a warm etron 50 battery (confirmed with OBD11 plugged in). Liked the video, don't worry about it being 'rushed' its good content even when rough around the edges. Excellent info and sense of adventure/travel. Drop the Audi stock content 😉👍
@pepstein
@pepstein 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting stuff. I suspect the inconsistent charging curves are down to battery temperature. Does the car preheat the pack while you drive to a DC charger? It looks like the charging curve is more aggressive than Tesla's, somewhat compensating for its low efficiency. A good metric minutes required to add 100 and 200 miles of real world 70 MPH highway range. I'd get a Taycan over the Audi equivalent. I like the looks much better. And I'd go with the slowest RWD variant with more sensible wheels and tires to improve range.

I get 260-270mi range on Taycan 4S with the 20” wheels which are 285 in the rear. May I ask what drive mode you were using on the motorway? Also I assume you can display the battery temp like the Taycan, this tells you why it charged slower. I charged from 1% to 81% in 23min.

@@davidshipp623 I would (and did) choose the Taycan over the MS if you enjoy driving on B Roads where handling is more of a concern and if build quality is more of an issue. @@ronb4633 Nice! I chose the MS but that was back at the end of 2014 RWD 85, upgraded to a P90DL in 2016 (midlife crisis). I can’t justify changing it at the moment as my mileage has plummeted during lockdown. They are different beasts and we still had children at home back then…. But now…. I am slightly scared to try the Taycan in case I love it too much and can’t justify a switch😂. I am assuming you haven’t had a chance to drive in the highlands or the Alps as yet? It’s amazing in an MS, in a Taycan it would be insanely good fun. (There are chargers all over in Scotland)

Temperature of battery most likely cause of different charging. No conditioning like Tesla's. Recent Model 3 US road trip in 70+ F temps had conditioning as much as 40 minutes before supercharger arrival. The Audi is essentially a car with 100 miles less range for a lot more money than a Tesla S.

Hi Richard, thanks for the video. It would be interesting to see, if you're able to run the E-Tron GT again, whether the charging speeds really are so variable. From your running of the E-Tron SUV, consistent high power charging speeds was one of the key themes that I took out of the those reviews/videos (up to and even beyond 80%), so I would have thought Audi would continue the trend with the charging technology, batteries, etc. on the E-Tron GT. Keen to get your thoughts and experience if you get to try the GT again in future! Thanks

its a great looking car, but it doesnt look like an electric car ... i mean there is a huge opportunity for car makers to change design direction, but audi has not taken it.... others have. Both the taycan and the audi are perhaps 8/10 for design, in different ways. I've got my cross tourismo on the way, base model so as to not loose "so" much over time, but I intend to keep it for the long haul, not a company car, a dog car for me. Wonder how these batteries will take these charges after 2 3 years use....
@riesa85
@riesa85 3 жыл бұрын
The difference between Audi/Porsche and Tesla is that Tesla is a new make without a brand heritage and customers that have sometimes been driving the same brand for decades. So what Audi (and most other "premium" makes) are doing is not alienating their existing base with new bold designs off the bat, but instead make them feel like Audis, but EV. I'd say it's a brilliant way to make the transition a bit softer for their buyers. One good example is the interior of the Q4 e-tron VS the interiors of Skoda Enyaq and VW id.4...
@garymurraya
@garymurraya 3 жыл бұрын
@@riesa85 could be, and its certainly what they say, but I think if/when apple make an electric car, it will sweep the board and then the other more "stable" companies playing to the previous audience may regret their approach, but who knows. An interesting 5 years to come, after the next 2 or 3 which wont change much. Im getting a Honda E as its the best looking design and then a Cross Tourismo as its the best for that size.... design counts for me as much as range, maybe more so. :)

Very impressed with the charging capability (so long as, as you say, the infrastructure nearby allows you to get the most out of it). Who knows, maybe an ex demo example in the future may make things more justifiable. Wonder if the GT Quattro (non-RS) has similar charge characteristics, presumable so if the same architecture). Keep up the great work!

I feel like I am there with you and as Im in the market for a new ev this is really important to me. I noticed some comments say that there's too much audi stock footage which I agree with but only because yours is much better. Your charging rate tests and real world range estimates are all things I need to know that other reviewers skim over or just quote from the manufacturer. Basically Ionity chargers are over priced and unreliable!. Ironic that Audi/VAG are co-founders of this charge network. Very very impressed with the new GridServe/Ecotricity fast chargers and a real hint of the future for EV long distance UK travelling. Waiting patiently for GridServe on the M4 and other motorways. Then no need for cars to carry very heavy batteries around. Heaviness affects efficiency. The Audi is impressive but after a year or two will be a massive depreciator as will be so many EVs that go further ,charger even faster or just as fast and will be lighter and much more efficient. EV Technology is moving rapidly.

Hi, those 305 tyres makes no sense to me, I think the Taycan uses less rubber, but they change the stance of the car. BTW, did the car knew every time that you were driving to a charging station? I mean, at constant 60 mph the used power should be about 25 kW, maybe 30 but not much more, and at 750V it means only about 40Amps max, not much heat at that speed, and you say in Scotland was quite cold, so maybe the battery was freezing cold, and without preheating you can’t get the higher charging power.

@johnharvey1786
@johnharvey1786 3 жыл бұрын
This is something that is not often mentioned. All charging stations have power regulators that adjust the power output depending on various criteria. This can be the available power from the local grid and any solar top up and its battery back up. If they have a solar top up this will not be available at all times if the battery back up is not large enough. The other obvious reason is if all or most of the units are being used at the same time as there will probably be an overall maximum load available at the location that is not the same as the stated maximum of each unit times the number of units. This is similar to the dual Tesla superchargers dropping to half charge when two car plug in. As most of the time not all units will be in use it’s better to have more units and ramp down so at least everyone can get a charge even if it means waiting a little bit longer.

@@kbe2176 For £135k I would expect well over 400 miles in most conditions and at the motorway speed limit of 70mph.Of course the Audi has better build quality than Tesla my current petrol Audi (not an R8!!!!!) has great Build Quality and is a joy to drive.

@@classicraceruk1337 Think you've missed my point though £135 k for the RS Vorsprung carbon black is the wrong one to look at. Etron GT Comfort and sound pack plus at £93k is much more a comparison to the Model S LR, the plaid + is £140k and is all about the numbers. I always thing wrong versions of cars are compared, and at the lesser points in the range the overall package is far more compelling.

I wasn't aware that Xpeng offers a GT car. And where's the Plaid+? Wait, I know, only feasible with new battery technology. LOL.

@@davidshipp623 Congrats to your car, must be awesome. But Audi plays in a different league when it comes to quality and handling.

@@simondelorean thanks it is, but I would love to try something different and was looking forward to this coming out. But I think Audi missed the mark with this one, the quality is obviously there but I watched the car wow review and it’s lacking on the performance and handling front which is a shame. Still it’s good to see these cars coming through. I’ve had 2 MS and driven 125,000 plus miles without problems, but that European refinement/quality is definitely absent. Does go like a stabbed rat though, as a certain youtuber would say😂.

Those brake vents are just an idiotic waste of time, $, material and efficiency for an EV.. these cars are not going to live on a track.. RS or not.. just a dumb waste.. just shows audi still doesn’t know what they’re doing with EVs.. they still have their heads in the past while trying to design these new machines.. seen again with idiotic fake grille still being used 🙄 And wtf is with 3 different 350kw chargers charging in all completely different profiles in one day? Bizarre.. was the battery temps that wildly varied over the day? Strange.. curious to know if its temps.. the different chargers.. or the battery management system. Taycan is way better looking, personally. Idiot grilles make me wanna puke

You need to not make videos when you’re miserable. You have the privilege of driving a car like the Audi and you are struggling to say anything positive. Even your summary sounds like you were complimenting the car through gritted teeth. It’s a stunning car but not on the same level as a Taycan.
