Have you shown this to Fortum/Kempower @Kris? Or Audi? I’ve never seen such behavior before in any e-tron.. (green light/no charge). Actually, I did experience something similar with my Tesla once, at low state of charge. Had to borrow a Chademo adapter from a random guy at Nebbenes SuC back in 2017/2018, before CCS, and charge a little bit at a 50 kW fast charger, before it would take any juice from the Supercharger.

Teslas have issues, but the charging network is not one of them - it works. You just plug in: no credit card, no gizmo - the car chats to California, registers and in comes the juice. Your account is debited, your credit account pays it and you, the driver, isn’t involved.

Strange.. 🤔 I’ve have been driving the e-tron 55 quattro for nearly two years, and only recall having problems charging once. (At stall #8 at Ionity Ringdalsskogen, where I had to reconnect two- or three times before it worked. All other stalls were busy.) NOTE! I always use RDIF and connect the car to the charger _before_ I authenticate and start the charging session.

Current chargers need to be more reliable with more stations(specifically here in Canada). Every time I take my classic Ioniq on a road trip I’m scared that the charger is broken or the car fails to handshake especially when there are only 2 chargers within 70km and one is already down for “maintenance” or is in use by a rapidgating Leaf.
@KrisRifa3 жыл бұрын
So true! I suspect that these are software issues that can easy be resolved by resetting the ECU/CU. I’m pretty sure if the car or charger had a soft reset switch this would resolve 99% of the issues. I’m having the same problem with my iPhone 12 Pro where it fails to charge with a wireless charging pad, but once reset it works.

@@markfitzpatrick6692 I never have these problems with my e-tron. 🤷🏼♂️ I suspect that the session often times out before the somewhat slow handshake completes. Especially when using an app. I believe it’s a good idea to connect to the charger before you authenticate- and start the session. And always use RFID.

I've never had any problems in The Netherlands and Germany. I noticed in the video that you connect the car after authorization. I do it the other way round; connect first and then authorize. Maybe that makes a difference?
@KrisRifa3 жыл бұрын
Doesn't what you do first, when the car actually does the handshake and approves connection which is what happened here. And as I said, this is the second time in two weeks at the specific charger. Watch my last video where I don't get more that 95KW speed with my E-Tron 55 and I talked to others who also aren't able to charge at Tvedestrand. Kempower has also been in contact with me so we can do some testing after new years.

It's a bit annoying that E-Trons often have problems with fastchargers. Sometimes mine also refuses to start charging eventhough i hold the plug always tight to the car. Most of the times it helps to give it a second try but unfortunately this doesnt work everytime. Made a "real highspeed run" yesterday (160km/h on german Autobahn) with my E55 resulting in 2 charging stops and averaging 34,6kWh for 390kms.

I worked 3 for automotive companies as software engineer. Partly in EV projects. When buying a EV, Tesla was a no brainer. They are 6-8 years ahead. These problems wont be solved in the near. Crappy protocols, lack of software engineering competence and no spirit for EVs in OEMs will hurt e-mobility for years.

Hi Kris, when calculating for the range, do you think the car is also considering battery pre-heat when you put a charger as destination ? accordingly considers some energy loss???
@omelvold3 жыл бұрын
I’ve monitored the battery temperature with an OBD device on my e-tron 55, and it doesn’t seem to warm up the battery neither on-route nor when preheating at home. Luckily, you still get decent speed, even if the battery is very cold, and speed picks up quite fast all the way to 150 kW, as shown by Kris many times. (According to the documentation, it will warm up actively only in “extreme” temperatures.)
