Very good Test and an awesome Video :) It made me clear once again, that Electro Cars are still not ready for everyday use, especially when it comes to long range travelling, the Time what you loose is immense and also when you charge up which takes 50 minutes!! If you compeare it with the new Mercedes E300de wich is a PlugIn Hybrid Diesel, you can travel up to 1100km also with the new S-Class S500 or the new C-Class C300e. I don´t know how is at your place but if you buy a new electro car you receive a Year Free charging (but not every charging station) and after that you need to pay and if you compare it with a Diesel or Gasoline, the charging is more expensive. (here in Europe)

Please don‘t judge electric cars on an Audi e-tron S. It has one of the highest consumptions of all EVs. There are much more efficient vehicles out there. Litke the newer Q4 e-tron or Tesla Model Y. They have similar space, cost less and have better range. So 300km between charging stops of about 20 minutes are no problem. Don‘t you have to stop on your 1100km range for biological reasons? The thing is, that you have to get a free charger when you need it. Regarding costs: I live in Europe (in Germany with very high cost for electricity) and driving an EV is cheaper. I pay about 6,50€ per 100km.

Audi e-Tron S looks so menacing! Yeah, it is quite thirsty, but its super fast charging will take care of this. Kris, what do you think of e-Tron S beside its consumption rate?

Another great video Kris! I think something is wrong with CCS and Kempower chargers. Yesterday I went to Hamar and stopped in ESPA ( Kempower chargers 62kw) to charge my 62kwh Leaf. An E-tron and the new Ioniq arrived at the same time as me. They couldn't charge their cars even if everything went well (green light in the chargers and the same screen you had with 0% charging speed and the SOC). The owners were trying with both app and RFID. I went inside and and bought some kanelboller :) . After 15 minutes my car was ready to go with 81% SOC (from 59). The other guys were still trying to charge... Those chargers were in use when we arrived (e-Golf and I- Pace). I was quite surprised because in 3 years I never had any issue with CHAdeMO... For what I saw in your videos, Bjørn's and other people E-tron has some sort of issues outside IONITY world (at leat in Norway). It could be interesting if you test more cars with CCS on Kempower chargers to see if this is a "real thing" or just isolated cases... Thanks for your videos!

Great video, and quite a scoop this S. 👍 The wheel dimensions are insane though. No other EV has such wide front tires, for good reasons.. Hope to see more tests with this car. Maybe Digital Matrix (if it has it) and some inspired driving on winding roads? 🙂

Driving on winter tires will reduce mileage with a combustion (gasoline/diesel) engine somewhere around 15% or more, even more on wet track. So an ordinary car would get less performance compared to summer tires.

Great video 👏 and even more important: now I have a good indication what my e-tron S will consume when it arrives here next year. Under those conditions, this is most probably the worst case scenario - except for significantly higher average speed. Did this one have the Digital Matrix LEDs? Hope to see an overall comparison video between your 55 and the S 👍
@omelvold4 жыл бұрын
Agree, these conditions- and kind of driving is close to worst case. It’s actually better if it’s colder, because then it’s usually dryer roads and less wind. Still, this consumption not a huge problem as long as you have access to HPC’s. Which is usually the case along motorways and main roads. And you don’t drive even faster than 121 mph (75 mph) for long stretches,. Then the charging stops becomes quite frequent in these conditions. Like every two hours, or even more often..
@audivisual4 жыл бұрын
@@omelvold Here in Austria we have got HPCs almost every 100 Km along the highways. And it seems the S consumption is not that far of the 55s I have driven. And the S just looks so good ...
@omelvold4 жыл бұрын
@@audivisual Agree, no problem at all. 👍 As you se in this unscientific test, it’s still as fast or faster than eg. the I-Pace on long’ish distances. Would be cool to race it against the TMX Performance on a 1000 km+ trip. I think Audi should have offered the e-tron S with a bit narrower wheels though. 265’s square setup. Or staggered, like 245/285 R20 which is standard on the Taycan Turbo. At least on the winter wheels. I’m a little concerned if 285’s will “float” easily on snow/slush/wet winter conditions and cause problems on bad roads in general. As well as cause more road noise. I know, it’s S line, not comfort line, still.. 🙂
@audivisual4 жыл бұрын
@@omelvold you can get the 20“ winter wheels with 255/50 tires. They look lost in those wheel arches, but you at least have the choice

Damn this E-Tron is so thirsty! Its nearly double the consumption of my classic Ioniq but I would still take it in a heart beat if it was available in Canada.
@bavariancarenthusiast27224 жыл бұрын
yes efficiency is very important - but how important is luxury? I know it´s heavy :) So comparing let's say a frugal ICE maybe from Audi too - with a luxury SUV from Audi . Q2 is 5.2 l/100km, or the Q8 R is 12.1 l/100km. Nobody is complaining. There is a lot of more weight for sound insulation, size..you pay upfront and with more consumption. The frugal cousin ID4 is very efficient in comparison.
@audivisual4 жыл бұрын
It only consumed 2 kWh/100 Km on average more than the iPace (31 to 29). In worse conditions. And you cannot really compare these 2 in my opinion
@bavariancarenthusiast27224 жыл бұрын
@@audivisual yes the iPace is "thirsty" too so to speak, but way smaller and sportier - slots one category lower / the Etron is a category larger

Every Delta charger sharing the power unit and up to 150 kW is make sense if 2 car can pull 150 kW will the speed be half. But If one charging on 50 kW will you only get 100 kW.
@omelvold4 жыл бұрын
You can even subtract a few minutes where you chose the wrong (shared) charger. 😉 Wonder why it failed at the cool Kempower chargers though. Maybe you should tip the manufacturer, or Fortum.. or even Audi, if you could get through 1st line support and generic answers.
@RoteLars4 жыл бұрын
@@omelvold I know why Kempower charger dosen't work with Audi e-tron. Need to hold the contact and press it to the inlet until its handshake is completed. And some models dosen't support Kempower charger becouse Audi need new software for it. Audi need CCS2 Rev 1 protocols.
@omelvold4 жыл бұрын
@@RoteLars Not sure if it’s the “hold gate” issue here.. 🙂 The connector/cable seems lighter and it’s being lifted up by the spring arm thingie. Could be something with the protocol/software though. In either end. I’ve never seen this behavior before. 🤷🏼♂️ Not in any video, or in soon to be two years driving the e-tron.

Question: Is an etron S always a 2021 version? I'm asking this because I want a 2021 etron S because the 2021 version has a slightly higher range and I'd hate to get the wrong one. I *THINK* the backseat USB-C ports are indicative of a 2021 version, but I am not certain. Anybody know for sure?

The issues with charging are unbelievable. Pretty much every non-Tesla is plagued with issues on these third party CCS chargers. I don’t know if it’s the chargers themselves, the CCS connectors OR the cars themselves. It’s just strange in a Tesla you pretty much never have these types of issues. Also, the >30kwh/100km is terrible considering you were only averaging 97km/h. That means this car is only really able to do about 165 miles (265km) on a full charge. A Model X Performance would likely be able to do over 400km on the same amount of energy.
