Hi folks, here's some detail about e-tron's more flat charging rate that a few people have correctly brought up. The devil is in the details. Video doesn't do details well unless it gets long and boring and in my attempt to streamline the charging information for mainstream viewers, the fine print was left out. I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor) and that rate stays fairly consistent up to around 70-80% of pack fill. My real world experience with Taycan using using a 350kW station was just under 20 minutes with the battery at 4% with temps around 50 degrees with a fairly warm battery. It started at 260kW at first, dropped gradually to 180kW around 50%, slowed steadily to 110kW while it made its way to 80% and then 85kW after 80% (I charged to 85% for grins to see what the rate was) . Ultimately, that gave me 200 miles of range (I found the real-world range was closer to 250-260 than the 203 EPA estimate). So while the Porsche system is better (especially to get a quick 75 miles to get someone home), Taycan easily costs 35K and for the few times that many people would charge it on the road (assuming the 80-85% home charging figure is true), I'm not sure the extra range and higher charging rate is worth the money. It just depends on the individual. I'd be happy to wait an extra 20 minutes (and possibly charge more frequently on a trip) or so to save all that money and get a similar luxury experience. And yes, we can go into the Tesla charging profile which is also pretty fast but if I understand correctly, it uses a curve similar to Porsche with a slightly overall slower rate. And I'll let the internet argue abut the interior experience but I think Audi and Porsche clearly win. My opinion.

Great review Tom. I just wanted to make a point about the e-tron's charging performance. Although the max rate of 150 kW is lower than Taycan and Tesla, the e-tron charges at that rate all the way to near 80%. The e-tron is still charging at >50 kW when you hit 100%. Peak rate can be deceptive as Taycan and Tesla have more traditional charge curves that fall off dramatically at about 40% and don't allow charging to 100% in a reasonable amount of time.

Yup, and thanks for pointing that out. I have no need for an EV, but if I lived in CA where gas is almost 3x what it costs me in OK and the State throws $1500 on the hood of this (to go with the $7500 Federal money), the Audi is the only one I'd buy today. That is $9,000 off and even through a 2-D monitor I can see a level of quality in the Audi that no Tesla will reach until around 2047. The updated 2021 Jag I-Pace is nice too; I'd have to drive that along with the Audi to make the final choice. Great review!

I replayed the part when you opened the charge port door (1:14) a few times, as I was impressed with the detail of the design and operation of this small part of the car. From certain angles the e-tron Sportback resembles the Mustang Mach-E but, as you mentioned in your review, Audi is serious about quality of materials and assembly. Still glad my EV (i3) has a range extender petrol engine. Despite its "meager" 120-mile electric range, we've only used 10 gallons of gas to cover 10,000 miles in 6months. Zero range anxiety with an ICE onboard! (GM was right about Voltec but marketed it poorly). Still too many public charger issues now to go full EV imho. YMMV.
@marcbungener1877
@marcbungener1877 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree with your comment on charging speed, it is actually faster to charge than a Tesla because it manage to keep the 150 rate up to 80%, and even after that it is still quite fast (partly thanks to a battery buffer and of course excellent cooling tech).You can check Bjorn Nyland videos if you have any doubt.
@bartwaggoner2000

But will the battery last as long? Tesla aims for 10+ year battery life, and charge/discharge rate greatly affects this.
@marcbungener1877

@@bartwaggoner2000 Audi keeps a buffer because it fears owners might charge to 100% too often while Tesla leave you the choice. It might also be because they think their client base are no geeks. This doesn’t answer your question and I guess so far there’s limited data because the car has only been in the hand of consumers since 2019. Amusing to think than when it comes to EV, VW group is the newcomer with limited track record and Tesla almost the incumbent. Quite an achievement ! Still I have serious doubt that Tesla will reach Toyota/Lexus reliability levels, time will tell.
@bartwaggoner2000
@bartwaggoner2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcbungener1877 I am sure Audi is better screwed-together than Tesla (at almost 6K pounds weight I would hope so!), but EVs are already so much more reliable than ICE vehicles it may not matter much. I do know my friend's Audi Q7 was constantly in the shop, and he switched to Tesla. My diesel Porsche Cayenne was quite reliable, but the maintenance costs were astronomical!

Very nice 👍 review.. just one thing that may confuse some people that don’t know better .. Note on the last red-light command in the video for better understanding.. Peak charging speed does not matter! when the charging curve is very poor .. The Audi eTron at 150kW charging speed charges FASTER THAN ALL Tesla from 0 to 80-100% on V3 Supercharger.. that is because the Audi etron has a flat charging curve up to 80% flat out @ 150kW making it faster than Tesla v3, Tesla v3 charging at 250kW drops off after only 23% then drops well below 150kW.. well before 80% making its overall charging rate slower than the eTron.. Charging curve matters more than just peak charging speed for a few minutes during charging .. so adding a faster charger with poor charging curve can end up being slower than a slower charger with a perfect charging curve... anyways..Soon I think we will need every manufacturer to report their average charging speed to 80% vs just possible peak charging speed ..
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post. I did not go into details on charging, only the basics, that 80% takes a half hour, which is pretty good. But here's the thing, if I'm only at a charging station to get that 40 miles needed to get home, the Tesla and Porsche systems do it faster. That's been a common scenario for me, because EA and EVGo are expensive. Charging at home is MUCH cheaper. I've only charged to 80 percent simply to find out how quickly it happens for the reviews. I've had people stand and watch the Taycan charge and marvel at the speed down below 50%. People need to look at their usage and lifestyle.
@fullyelectric
@fullyelectric 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenCarReviews I see your point, however that edge case would need to be stated, adding 40miles on a V3 @ 250kW vs 150kW that small amount of range works out to 5min on a 250kW and 7min on a 150kW 2min difference is truly nothing major I would rather stay at the charger a few more min to have loads more range after getting home .. Tesla current 250kW charging curve is simply no match to the eTron at only 150kW overall .. yes the Taycan is the best however truly a different class base on price, and the Taycan does not have a flat curve to 80% it peaks at 270kW and stay in the curve longer than Tesla 250kW peak .. but still does not have a flat 270kW curve to 80% base on testing the Taycan and eTron still ends up at 80% close to the same time 5min difference.. This is why knowing charging curve and or average charging speed to a given percentage is so important .. not just peak speeds, point I am trying to make is Audi could have put in support for 250kW DC charging that could end up being slower than its current 150kW flat charging speed curve to 80% SoC, so it’s hard to say faster charging speeds are better without knowing the charging curve .. this is the key information most people don’t know having a higher charging peak rate does not really mean you are charging faster overall .. Note: I updated my first post .. it seem a bit strong and that was not the intention...

Very few people only own an EV, and those people live almost exclusively in major cities (stats from actual dealers). Most of the range anxiety concern comes from people not buying EV's anyways. Why would you need 500 miles to a charge since you charge it overnight. The average miles driven per day is 29.5, so say we even triple that to 90.5, and even in the worst of conditions you lose 40% range to say cold weather. You'd still only need a 150 mile range EV and a 200 mile range EV would give you some comfort, the rest is just auto makers overbuilding stuff so people "consider" actually buying the cars. My 2008 jeep grand cherokee has an average 240 miles of range with a 21 gallon fuel tank and roughly 12mpg, and I have never had range anxiety. On a full tank (like you'd have leaving your house with a fully charged ev), that 240 miles is roughly 4 hours of driving on a highway, which isn't a bad time for a break anyways. Now I know there are some very specific use cases where the extra range is needed, but for the most part its just people fearing what they don't understand.

Great review, awesome production quality as usual. The eTron seems lacking in range but it would be good enough for someone who has access to another ICE/hybrid car for longer rides thus using it for shores, errands. I am considering it (I work from home and only use my car to go the gym, my wife has a pick up car that we use for longer trips), but likely I will wait to see what the Q4 eTron will look like: a luxury id4 with more range for sure to use than the regular eTron but if it doesn't have that refinement that the regular eTron has (THAT suspension for example, I test-drove it and it was like a cloud), then I'll pick and eTron sportsback. I totally agree when it comes to "one physical button=one function". Screens have their limits... Very much so! So, you keep the red Sshirt of your Evil twin ONLY for your the days you shoot or you have several? Please tell us! I knew Audi was called Auto Union before being called Audi. I think Tom was minimizing the need for higher range or charging infrastructure a bit. A lot of people can't charge at home, whether because they live in apartments or because they have street parking. EVs are still toys for wealthy people until the charging infrastructure is built out.

The only thing that keeps me from buying an electric car is range. I do a fair amount of day trips, for instance skiing, where I need at least a 350 mile range(in cold weather - and no I don't want to have to stop for 30 minutes to top up). 450-500 miles is what I want and I want to be able to charge at at least 100mile/5min. Let's face it my current car can give me 400+ miles in five minutes.

Yes, there are others but they are not you. Maybe Tesla is afraid of your no nonsense approach. Everyone is talking about the acceleration and uneven seams. You talk practical stuff. If one of my body panels has a 2mm gap and the other a 3 mm gap, it will not make the ride smoother, the car handle better or the battery life 10% less. Yes if I walk around the car for 10 min and examine EVERYTHING, it could be annoying but short of a few of us OCD folk, I don’t see many of my Neighbors eyeing their car in the driveway for 30 min. ;-). Keep it real! Looking forward to next video.

the "only" 150kW charging power is rather misleading. It has one of the best charging curves out there, even compared to Tesla. Indeed, Teslabjorn covered 1000km in about the same time as a model X raven, despite having a shorter range
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to cut and paste my reply to J Vincent here- Some detail (that is hard to present in a video clearly) that may benefit others- I wasn't able to charge the e-tron using 150kW from a low charge state (I used Level 2) but Audi claims a 0-80% fill takes 30 minutes with 150kW (obviously temp is a factor). Be well!

I've been in one and there's some cool things about it. I'll point out it's around 4,400 pounds to the 5,760 for the larger e-tron. And from what I can glean, the real-world range seems to be closer to 240 miles to the average of 200 I saw with the Audi. Just trying to keep it real here.

I've owned 5 Audis. Starting with the 90 thru A4s and an A2. Excellent cars, but with the A series someone in Audi land figured they could increase prices and sell even more by suckering people to think they have better thanMercedes or BMW. Thankfully electric cars need little servicing otherwise with that nice cup of 'free' expresso, the repair invoice is like buying another car!! Check out the profit of Audi division..
