Perfect. Just fixed mine. Insulation broken on both wires. About 5mm of wire exposed on each. Assembled, screen still black. Quick check revealed 5A fuse blown. Full working order now. Cheap fix and no visit to main dealer. Thanks for the video.

Ryan: I have a 2012 Audi A6. Thanks for the informative video! I followed your directions and rounded up all the components and tools I needed to complete the task. The most informative part of the video was the sequence of panel removal to get the MMI out. After repairing the wires, getting the wires jammed into the dashboard so they didn't interfere with the MMI operation was trickier than I expected upon reassembly. I got it dialed after a few trials. I started at 5 PM and project was completed in just over 2 hours! I had two broken wires, and there was evidence of a previous repair on mine. Works great. The thing I missed the most about the black screen was the backup camera. I found a work around for the radio on the screen between the Tach and the speedo, until I got it repaired. No blown fuses. Thanks so much!

Thank you! This worked for me, mine had intermittent issues it would turn off sometimes then work other times then it got worse to the point it would only work for a second or two once it was opened then turn off.. I pulled back the wiring and there it was brittle wiring which was barely held together, you saved me a bunch of money!

Perfect fix for my issue on my Audi A6 C7 2012. I had the same issue whereby everything worked on the mmi except the screen being black once fully opened. My screen actually worked initially then turned black half way through the opening/popping out cycle. Then was black thereafter. Turns out my cables were both split and needed repairing. Followed the steps and with a new fuse and works perfectly. Thank you for an informative and detailed video.

Thanks so much mate I just got an Audi today and I managed to get $1500 off the price to fix this problem because they had no idea what the problem was I said if it’s not the screen it could be wiring and could cost quite a bit but sounds like a very easy fix. Hello Ryan, question regarding the wires. I’m an American so I won’t lie and say I’m ignorant to some of the measuring. I’m getting very different answers regarding what wire I should use to replace it. You said in the video it should be 1/2 mil wire. Does that translate to 22 or 24 gauge wire? Disregarding that, amazing video

Mine is an Audi A6 2013 SE. I had the same issue. Black screen as soon as it came out. That was the only issue. Everything else working fine such as radio, media and changing stations etc. I followed the same as you have explained. Only extra thing I had to do is the fuse replacement as I may have blown it. So that's done and all good now. Thanks very much for your help. Video is very clear and understandable.

UPDATE During the repair I may have touched the two power leads together blowing the 5amp fuse in the passenger-side fuse holder (RHD model). SO if your screen is still black after the repair, check the fuse, it may just be as simple as that! Thanks again for a really excellent video tutorial. === Hi. My screen flickered on and then stayed off when it opened so I was reasonably sure it was a broken wire. Incredibly good and detailed video makes the doing the repair really simple. I had two broken wires exactly as depicted in the video. BUT … after doing the repair the screen stayed black. Radio works but the screen doesn’t. I took it all to pieces again to check if I had badly soldered joints but all was fine. Plugged and unplugged the cables, dead screen. Can you suggest anything to try? Thanks
@RyansWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you managed to sort it, and that would have been my first answer to check the fuses 👍
@paulallen3081 Жыл бұрын
I’ve done exactly the same. Broken cables in the exact same place, repaired them both but still black. Too much of a coincidence to not be this. Can you let me know which fuse is likely to be blown. I’ve checked all the 5 amp fuses in the boot but all seem in tact.

Subscribed! Great advice - my mmi screen is on for a few seconds (1-2 seconds) once the screen is up but then turns off, do you think this will be a broken wire causing this issue too?
@RyansWorkshop8 ай бұрын
Thank you, yes it does sound like that could be the issue, because that particular open position is likely where the strain is on the wires

Hi, Thanks so much for the walk through. I have 2010 A6 with a fixed in screen but I and am having the exact same problem with a black mmi screen. Is it reasonable to assume the same issue of a dodgy power wire?
@RyansWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
To be honest it could potentially be something else, as the most common reason for the wire breaking is because of the flex in the cable weakening it over time as the screen opens and closes, because your screen doesn't move, it would likely point to something else, maybe a loose plug or a fuse?

Greetings from New Zealand and thanks very much for the video. I have a slightly different problem and would greatly appreciate your help. The MMI screen on my just-purchased 2012 A6 does not pop up. I tried the reset procedure by pressing the Menu, joystick and top right buttons at the same time for a couple of seconds with the ignition on. There is a clicking and whirring sound, but the screen does not pop up. The radio and CD units do not play either. Would you have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
@RyansWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
I would suggest locating the correct fuses for the radio and cd part of the system as that sounds like something may have blown if nothing is working, because they should work even with the screen closed, as for the screen not operating but making a noise, it could potentially be the mechanism on the screen failed in some way.

I have an A7. My screen comes on as the screen is opening, but then goes black once the screen is fully opened. I followed the video to see if there were any loose wires. But everything seemed ok. Any suggestions??
@RyansWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like one of the power wires have broken inside, they don't always completely break like in the video causing the screen to only come on sometimes, I would suggest moving the wires around where they move to see if the screen comes on, if so it would confirm that the moving part or the wire needs replacing like in the video.
