Launched in 1980, the quattro is now in its fourth decade. It's no exaggeration to say it changed the world. Dan revisits the rallying icon in Wales. In mid-winter. At dawn...

these cars are the same age as myself, I can still clearly remember sitting watching them on my grannies tv driven by the likes of Walter Rohrl and Michele Mouton through the forest stages with the intriguing and incredible sound of the 5 pot spitting flames. I learnt all I could about them and never knew of anyone who had one, but for my 21st birthday bought myself an 87 ur in graphite black. The most fabulous car ever. A pure joy just to see it outside the house and always a smile upon starting it up. Driving it felt really special. Great times. Nice video well done.

Such a beautifully made video, enjoyed every second. Have to say, doesn’t matter if your a jdm fan, German fan, American fan etc etc the Audi Quattro is one car that deserves respect from every true petrol head. Such an epic car 👌🏻 and I am not the greatest fan of German cars. Thanks for the video folks

alwyn McMath AUTO-DIDACT I have to stop using the word Hate bud , such big statement, the b7 rs4 is my all time favourite German car. Unreal machine, the German cars just don’t interest me mate, the history, what they stand for etc. There are some real beautiful amazing German cars no doubt just not cars I’d have in the garage. Jdm is where the heart is. Love the community, the history and most of all love all the true jdm hero’s 😎 I’m definitely gonna try and stop using the world hate 👌🏻

Thank you Dan for another great video and thank you Jörg Bensinger for the Audi Quattro. When it snowed last year, I took my dog for a walk in the Surrey Hills and drove my Q5 to the Pitch Hill car park. There were loads of cars parked on the road outside but I thought I'd chance the car park itself, forgetting that it was at the bottom of a hill. A now compacted snowy, virtually abandoned hill. I sheepishly parked up my Q5 and went for the walk. When we got back I could hear cars revving and tyres slipping on the compacted icy hill. One stranded car was a Range Rover Evoque. I felt numb at the fact I would be stranded miles from home with our dog if "the best 4x4 by far" was stuck. I gingerly reversed out of the space, selected drive, and gently depressed the accelerator, and to my utter amazement and relief, drove up the hill and out of the car park! It was clearly an incredible system in 1980 and has just got better and better ever since.

Massive Audi fan. I was lucky to take one of these early Quattros around the back country roads of Vermont in every type of weather from hot dry summer roads to picturesque Vermont winter snow. Bought the first Allroad and loved it. Never let me down with multiple cross American road trips for years. The Allroad was so inspiring one didn't care you were in torrential rains, massive white outs or blasting through the Rockys on a perfect summer's day. In all conditions, there was always a smile on my face. Like I said, I am a massive Audi Fan. Great job on the Video and great job in general with all your PistonHead's content.

Love these 5 cylinder Audi's from this period, the engine noise is terrific. Had a 100CS and Coupe both 5 cylinder and drove the UR Quattro quite a few times. One of my most memorable drives was in a UR in the 80's when not so many cars on the road - 25 miles in 26 minutes all country lanes. Have a Quattro A6 now but not even close to the UR or the 5 cylinder cars. They were definitely fun times. Thanks for a great reminder.

One of the worst decisions I ever made was to turn down the offer of a swap of a 10v Quattro for my substantially newer 325i Sport in 1990. It was the first turbo car I'd driven and the lag put me off. I remember being unimpressed with the brakes too. You live and learn, what an icon they are today.

Had my first ride in one (a 20V RR)in 1996, but it was 16 years later before I finally owned one - my 1990 20V (search for “ur quattro crown range”for a video of the car over the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka, New Zealand). I still own it, 111,000 miles, totally rust free, and an absolute joy to drive.

My mother had a bright orange mk2 Passat GL5 with the 2.0 10v. When the back box rotted out I said I had one that would fit..well I made it fit anyway. She was horrified with the sound at first but after a week she loved it. Even without a turbo it was a lovely flexible engine. If the IDI diesel lump in my T4 ever dies I'd be awfully tempted to put a straight five petrol in it.

I can remember its release, back in 1980. Compared to the standard Audi Coupe, the quattro model was considerably more expensive. You had to be quite well heeled to afford one. Then there was that sublime Quattro Sport version, which cost nearly three times the price of a standard Quattro. Only 200 were ever manufactured, and your chances of seeing one on British roads, is as likely as picking up a winning lottery ticket from the pavement.

Thanks for a great video. I feel so privileged that as a young man (completing my engineering qualifications), I worked for Audi back in the early to mid eighties - during the wonder years of rallying and was lucky enough to drive many Ur quattro cars (I even had a short drive in a Sport, which was epic). The standard car was, as you said, a revelation to drive and unlike anything I'd driven before. I spent much of the 80's at rallies, with the sound of the straight 5 ringing through the forests, as the Marshall's blew their whistles to warn spectators to get off the track. Some cars will always be iconic and I'm not at all surprised that the car still drives well by modern standards. Although I now own one of the dream cars from my youth, a quattro or better still a Sport would definitely be part of my ideal collection. Wow, 40 years - hard to believe!!

Good stuff. The thing that most people overlook these days is the room for 4 adults in a Quattro. Not many 2+2s can offer that today. Turbo lag was among the worst I've ever encountered though and it was all done by 5500rpm. Later 20v motors were much better. Quattro offered incredible point to point speed in all weathers an indisputably great car. No Quattro no Integrale, no Escort Cosworth, Carrera 4, Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Evo and the rest. Was it the first car to introduce box wheel arches?
