It’s time for an awesome RWD DRAG RACE!
We’ve got Mat in a Corvette C8 Stingray, and he’s facing off against a Porsche 911 Carrera and an Audi R8 RWD!
Now all these cars have pretty varied outputs, but we assure you it’s going to be closer than you think! Starting with the Corvette, it’s powered by a 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 that puts down 482hp & 613Nm. It also weighs in at 1,655kg.
As for the Porsche, its 3-litre flat-six twin-turbo engine can ‘only’ put down 385hp and 450Nm. However, it’s easily the lightest car here, weighing in at just 1,509kg!
Then finally we have the Audi. It’s powered by a gorgeous 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10, that’s good for 570hp and 550Nm. It also weighs in at 1,609kg.

Man the 911 never fails to impress. You throw it up against any sports car and it always shows you what German engineering is capable of. Being the least powerful and still keeping up with the Corvette, which is a lot more powerful, is just impressive.

@@mikerobinson7988 More likely the Corvette numbers are accurate and the 911 is downgraded so it doesn't compete against the "Turbo" model, even though it's still a turbo. 11.8 Quarter Mile, seems accurate to me. The 911 is overachieving for it's numbers, though not it's price.

Its the base model Corvette as well. A turbo-charged Z06 model is coming next year which should be good competition for the Porsche 911 turbo. We should see (the Z06 ) competing at Le Mans next month in GTE class against top model Porsche 911 turbos, Lambos and Ferraris (perhaps Aston as well)

Some are missing how efficient Porsches drivetrain is. The rear mounted engine reduces the loss in power you typically see with other setups due to where the engine is placed and how it's directly connected to the transmission. Also, as we all know, they underestimate their figures.

My guess is alsl you need to shortshift that C8 at like 6k instead of revving it. You need to look at the power/torque curve, you re just losing power. Also that Vette is sick being the cheapest of the bunch.

To bypass the soft limiter on most of them, after your vehicle is warmed up, put your drivetrain in neutral (instead of Park), that will usually allow you to rev to full RPM.

Remember power to weight ratio is the key for these tests, the 911 is a bit over 3,100 lbs in that configuration, corvette 3,700 and R8 3,700 to 3,900 lbs makes a difference its like putting 3 adults the car.....

I'm guessing that the Porsche has a higher rev limiter and stays in the power longer than the C8 because of gearing. I could be wrong, but I can't imagine the weight difference between the two affects the performance this much. (also aero, but still.)

Aerodynamics play a role. It's not just about the drag coefficient (which i suppose will be better with the more smooth porsche shape) but also the cross section area. The corvette is pretty wide and for sure has a bigger cross section as the 911. Still, all considered the 100 hp difference schould still have been visible in the races. Also there's an often unexpected reason why cars of Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes occasionally are dynoed with quite more power than they officially should have. -> When the dyno crews are not aware that the engine software already compensates for sea level and temperature, and so they let the dyno software compensate for that. -> double compensation when in actual fact the car only produced what it's supposed to. (Sure the compensation of the engine software has it's limits, so if you live in mexico city, they won't make the power it has on paper...) Read about the issue years ago from a german car magazine which had the same issue at first.

Corvettes were always a cheap, powerful workhorse. It’s why they sell so well. It’s a more affordable performance car that can beat a lot of cars that cost significantly more. Although, I have a feeling that Porsche engineers focus on everything but the engine power, while the Corvette takes an old-fashioned approach with a bigger engine and more gears.

@Michael Charity reply with scientific evidence also, as mentioned, these modern boosted Porsches make way more power than the brochure suggests, hence the 100hp deficit is probably nothing in real terms, also boosted cars lose less/no power the higher the altitude, so whats the track’s altitude above sea level? Probably not a lot considering its in the Uk but still a few percentages. All of these factors attributes to the race being as close as it was. Drag only starts to make a noticeable difference at very high speed, also as you mentioned in the end of the rolling races this also starts to be a factor. A Base 911 in manual must be bliss.

The heroic proportions are just gone on it. Never been a fan of mid engined proportions. Always preferred the long hood short deck proportions of cars like the E type or 250 GTO or older corvettes and Vipers or the 2000GT. The C7 design grew on me after a while but I honestly don't think this one will especially with how much worse the rear end looks compared to the C7

Hi Mat, thanks for the interesting video. My guess is that the Porsche came so close to the Corvette and even beat it twice, because of better aero(Top speed: 308 kph vs 299 kph). Aero is really important at high speeds. The Porsche probably would have won every race against the Corvette if it didn't have to carry two more cameras. I know those cameras are tiny, but in aerodynamics one or two mms can make all the difference, especially the additional front camera. GRIP tested both those cars and the Porsche won by quite a margin. Underpromise, Overdeliver. best regards

495 horsepower on.the Corvette is brakehorsepower it's not horsepower to the wheels. It's modeling 443 horsepower to the wheels actually in America. Add in a convertible which is about a hundred pounds heavier and it is bound to hurt performance a little.

I remember when I was younger and started liking cars I used to think Porsches were boring. I kept saying they all looked similar, were small and weren't all that. Now many years later I think Porsches are at the top of the game. They command respect in the car scene and are a symbol of prestige. They're the single worst car you can go up against in a race. They are at the pinnacle of auto engineering. If you could only name one car that has the whole package and embodies what a sports car is it would be Porsche.

Ivan, you need to get out more. I own both a C8 Stingray due to be replaced upon arrival of the C8 ZO6, and a 992 S. The C8 Stingray is faster than the 992 on timed drag strip. Maybe, if we tune 992 it could beat the C8. I have a problem with youtubers. There revenue is based on clicks. The only Porsche that is fast is our Turbo S. It is a legit 2.5 0-60, 10.00-10.1 1.4 mile drag car. The rest of the Porsche line up are not in that category. Remember this, Ivan. The 992, 992 S and GT4 finished behind the C8 Stingray at the Nurbrugring. The saddest part is the Turbo S at over $270,000 with over 500 hp finshed 1 second ahead of the C7 Grand Sport with 460 HP at the Lightning Lap. I don't know about you but, it would hurt to spend $270K just to finish 1 second ahead of a $66,000 Corvette.
