The Corvette - Has its own charm. It checks all the boxes I need in a car. I've own that car for 3 years now (Which seems to drive better with age - I know that doesn't make sense - but something now exists with the car that it didn't have when I 1st bought it. 2 ай бұрын
These parts are always availble and will be for a long long time.
@JETZcorp2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't be too worried about the parts availability, either. The engine is mostly common with a ton of Audi cars, as well as commonality with the V10 cars (same engine family). The car itself is mostly a rebodied Gallardo, from which a lot of things were carried forward into the newer Huracan and R8. While it's never going to be as effortless as maintaining a base Corvette over at Bill Smith's Chevy/GMC, I should expect an R8 to be far more maintainable than a non-VW exotic like a Ferrari or McLaren. It seems much more akin to owning a 911 GTS or similar. But God Rest the Soul of whoever has to touch the timing chains on this engine.

I love your channel. First, I enjoy seeing you drive cars that I will never own or probably drive. HOWEVER more important you guys teach us to think. In March my Nissan Xterra was totaled. Fortunately, I have recovered. So how do I replace it? Being immobile for 3 months I had a lot of time for research. One thing I learned is most KZbin reviews are "rinse and repeat." Watching you guys, has taught me to think! The real question is, "What do I want for my Everyday Driver?" I think you will be surprised where I finally landed. I had to set a budget. Do I go used or new? I chose to buy new if at all possible. I'd say 90% of my driving is from home to work. I don't want to write a book, but listening to you two banter for years has taught me that there is no "one size fits all." One of my needs is I do hunt and fish in the mountains, but I really don't need a "rock crawler." Comfort and visibility out the front and side are important to me. I wanted some pep. I wanted some handling on the mountain roads that are paved. So following your thinking and do some test driving I ended up with a Heritage Edition of the Ford Bronco Sport. Is it perfect? No. I'm going to upgrade the tires. I bought the 3 cylinder because many respected reviewers said it improves cornering having a lighter engine up front. Looks matter. Robin's Egg Blue is one of my favorite colors, so that is what I got. With the all wheel drive it is very fun on the winding roads. Sport mode could end up with me seeing flashing lights in the rear view mirror. I've had my share of sport cars, a BMW and a Camaro were two of my favorite. I would call my Bronco Sport, Miata like. So for now, I have an "Everyday Driver." that I look forward to jumping into whether I am going to work, heading in the mountains to go fishing or hunting, or just enjoying the winding paved roads. Thanks guys for teaching us how to think.

Should have compared it to the V10.... Just saying. And in 15 years the R8 will be worth more than an everyday C8. Gen 1 R8 V10 With a DCT or 6 speed manual any day over a boring C8.

Still remember the concept car in 2003 and then the very simmilar looking "future interpreatation car" in the "I Robot" movie for the first time. I prayed so hard that Audi builds this as soon as possible. Sadly i never won in the lottery to buy one new. Funny enough, i bought a used Corvette C6 4 years ago. And now safe money to find a well priced R8 from around 2012-2015.. Keep on the great works, guys! Greets from Munich:)

Great review. at first wasn't sure if it made sense ,but taking a closer look it did. New vs used for similar $$ is an eternal question for enthusiasts that need to consider a price point For me, a manual is mandatory(see Todd's comments about the gated manual). I'm sure todays auto/pdk/dcts are great but for me driver engagement/experience is paramount. Also, new isn't always better Especially when looking at how antiseptic most new sports cars are becoming. Sports cars . Sports cars used to require commitment and were uncompromising in what they asked of you. Just ask Paul and Todd how they feel about their "old " Cayman and Elise.

Great comparison. Sounds like the C8 is similar to what you all say about the Golf R/GTI. In other words, it sounds like a great all-arounder… perhaps, a master of none, except maybe performance.

I went from a 370Z to a C8. First thing I noticed was the weight in a turn. There is a turn on the way to work that I took at 60mph in the 370Z. I am getting use to holding the same turn at 60mph in the C8 and learning to trust the car. I am getting use to the weight pushing me from behind down the road into the turn.

It should really be emphasized that this is NOT for equivalent mileage. You are not going to get a zero miles R8 for zero miles corvette money, and that is important.

This whole comparison bothers me. Even if depreciation brings one car down to the other, same year seems like it matters more than price, to be fair to the manufacturers.

I owners a 2012 low mile V8 R8 4 years ago, then a FBO GTR last year and now a 3LT C8. There’s no comparison. The C8 destroys everything about the R8. The only thing the c8 doesn’t compete against my old GTR is the power. That thing was a blast but sitting inside was like being in a Nissan Sentra.
@davepaturno42902 ай бұрын
How about the gen 2 NSX. It is most likely the most reliable exotic car. Now if you were to be not concerned about reliability, I'd take a used McLaren 570 Spider. It is much faster than the C8 in the 1/4 mile.

I love the idea of the C8. While I haven't driven one (I'd like to), I just do not like the large size, heavy weight, and the very odd appearance it can have at certain angles because of the rear. I had a similar choice to make recently when I bought a sports car and I did not chose the C8. It's all just personal preference to me. I think that a lot of cars can be better than another for a particular buyer - it depends on what they prioritize. I prioritize lower weight and a smaller size (I'd love a Miata with a V6/V8). I don't begrudge anyone for prioritizing other traits.

You can make the argument about depreciating assets, but the R8 has held its value well. The corvette(standard) is a production car and has been hit hard with depreciation. For looks, high rpm, manual, I'd go R8. But I'd want it with proper suspension - either rebuilt factory items or some quality aftermarket stuff with little to no lowering. Very interesting comparison, and I love how far apart Todd and Paul's commentary is!
@spinnetti2 ай бұрын
I know what I did. That R8 is over-lowered. The vette is a great car, but its brash like a kid drew it, but by far the best Vette interior ever. The Audi is far more elegant and restrained - pick your poison. I find myself hitting the rev limiter on the R8 as it sings so effortlessly. An aftermarket exhaust is a must though for the Audi to release the aural experience it is meant to have. Can't lose either way really but in the US, you can't wring out either one so its all about the engagement and the R8 has a manual and hydro steering, so it was a must for me. Doesn't the vette still have huge markups? I'm not rich enough to abuse either one on track, so strictly a street car for me either way. (The original Mag ride on the Audi was GM's system ;)

@timothycoyne58742 ай бұрын
I'll probably never be able to afford either of these wonderful cars, but if I applied my usual car buying logic, I'd probably buy the C8 Corvette. Reliable, cheaper to service, new car warranty (or some kind of warranty if you buy a CPO), modern tech, and more usable for a daily driver. Plus, my parents had a yellow C3 when I was a little kid, so I'll always have a soft spot for the Vette. That being said, I love the R8. The looks, the sound, the uniqueness, the rarity, and a gated manual V8. The C8 - while now kind of common, even here in northern Ohio - still turns my head. But seeing an R8 in person is an event. They're just special in a way most C8s will never be. But being a more pragmatic enthusiast, I'd buy the C8.

Yeah, but those early R8 unibodies fatigue and stress crack the car into two pieces through normal driving. Always be sure to check under the plastic cover that covers the wiper arms and motor. There will be stress marks right behind the strut towers. Those cars total themselves over time.

@deesan71332 ай бұрын
@@wstlndiesel what? The R8 doesn't look dated at all. Interior tech is dated but that's about it, the exterior is timeless, especially 2014+ facelift tail and headlights or with 2010+ headlights even. The vette is chimera based off multiple other sports cars, might look striking at first sight from afar but when you actually take time to observe it, it's quite ugly. It's also incredibly boring to drive and they are everywhere, basically regular traffic at this point. The R8 has a refined silhouette that did and always will look unique and different than any other car on the market. The vette is just a cheap trendy exotic look-alike mass production car that everyone will forget once gm comes out with the next gen.
