The s1 probably has a quicker gear change than your average manual too and that video really does show the advantage that those dsg type boxes give when you're trying to get down the road in a hurry. I have heard though that the likes of the golf r with a manual box has a totally different feel to it and is a lot more enjoyable than the dsg boxed golf r when getting thrown down a twisty back road.

@@lknowledge yip, they found variable stacks in some of the the 6r4 airboxes about 10yr after GroupB was over. They claimed 6R4 was 370-420bhp depending on air restrictor but the reality is even they N/A V6s were pushing 500bhp with the variable inlet stacks and all that. Listen to some of the 6R4 footage, you can hear the thing sounding chunky as F-ck around the 3200rpm which wasn't when the cam profile went nuts so clearly that was variable inlet stacks giving that visible boost of power. When cameras were mounted inside the 6r4 would shake like a mofo and go blurry at 3200rpm which again is a trait of variable inlet stacks. Toyota got caught later in normal WRC with a variable inlet on the turbo cold side it would suck open an outer vairable stack on the turbo inlet hose under heavy boost and give the thing loads more torque and a chunk of bhp.. they were all doing that in GroupB and keeping it quiet, that's where they learned it.

As someone that was 16 when S1's, T16's, RS200's, 6R4's and S4's were flying past my house in South Wales on an RAC Rally special stage, and what got me in to cars in the first place, that turbo flutter brought back awesome memories of these beasts at full chat. Living a KM from the RAC service stop in South Wales and meeting Markku Alen, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Michele Mouton, Tony Pond, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomquist, Ari Vatanen and many more Group B drivers from that era and many others from Group A onwards was an absolute privilege as you had to be a sandwich short of a picnic to drive these turbo nutter b@stards over forest and gravel roads.

0:48 to clarify the PDK thing: that was back in the S1‘s racing time. Audi thought of ways to optimise the S1 and back then Porsche used a 5 speed double clutch system in their top tier lemans prototypes. So Audi went to Porsche Consulting and had them adapt that system for the S1. It took really long to get that thing perfected to Audis standards but once it was perfect the rally drivers and co-pilots actually didn’t like it much because it made the car too fast and they missed the speed/course reference a manual gearshift gives you. And then on the first rally where they used it Walter Röhl crashed the car so then they terminated the project and went back to manual for the next rally

@@lasskinn474 Well, that's the point - top power is down on newer cars. I follow rally so I am familiar with typical power & torque figures for each of these categories. Newer cars have much more efficient drivetrains with less mechanical losses and sequential gearboxes. And I have no doubt that even S2000 car would be quicker on actual courses than Quattro S1, the handling is that much better nowadays, it is quite frankly amazing. But my guess is that properly launched Quattro would be quicker at the 1/4 mile than anything all the way up to 2017-2021 1,6 litre WRC with about 380 HP. 2022 1,6l hybrids have 500+ HP.
