The Smoking Tire takes Audi's fastest four-seat convertible for a run through the hills. Though it loses rigidity and gains weight compared to its coupe sibling, could it still be worthy of Audi's RS moniker?

"ONLY" 317 lb-ft of torque. There are plenty of cars, GOOD cars, that would kill for that much torque. :) That exhaust note gives me a boner though.

317lb-ft of torque isn't that much. Especially for a V8. And just like what Dylan said, for that price, it's slow. 380-400 would be a more reasonable number.

317 isn't the problem. It's 317 at 4000 rpm. That's extremely high up in the rev band. It's making mid 200s around 1500-3000 rpm.

As an Audi guy, the real problem with that figure is the S5 with 3.0T (SC'd) you get 325 lb ft of Tq. Which costs significantly less and then there is the fact if you mod the SC'd V6, it's WAAAY out in front of the RS5 on the bang for buck scale and outright acceleration. Audi should have ditched the RS 4.2 NA after the B7RS4 IMHO.

"Everyone loves the color"? What? I'm sorry, but IMO that "Nardo Grey" is the worst color I think I've ever seen. It's literally looks like shiny primer. I imagine the guys in the Audi factory sprayed the car with grey primer and thought "Okay, what color should we paint this one?", but then they thought "Aww fuck it, we'll just spray the clear right over the primer and give it some fancy name.".

ewt415 Even if it wasn't the color of primer, I still wouldn't like it. Metallic gray can look pretty good, but IMO solid grey looks pretty bad. It doesn't have the deep/shiny look of black, or the contour highlights of white, or the eye catching pop of red or blue, or the glittery look of metallics/pearls. It's just so _bland_.

RS's are great... But they need to lose weight.. For the extra you pay - Audi should use more exotic materials.. Carbon Fiber - plastics - aluminum. The S8 (not really an RS) is all aluminum - and the R8 is an aluminum spaceframe - so those two are fine. The other RS's though need a diet - and then they will be top of the class.

@senorgato70
@senorgato70 10 жыл бұрын
Fugedibobo Of course. The point being, for the high-performance RS5 model, why not use a version of the turbo 8's that are in the S6/S7 to increase torque. The 8's in the S6/S7 allow those cars to essentially match the acceleration of the RS5, despite both being 400-500 lbs heavier.
@Fugedibobo
@Fugedibobo 10 жыл бұрын
The next generation RS5 will probably come with a turbo. They just had to find another use for this engine other than the R8 V8 and the RS4. It's a really good engine though, sounds good also naturally aspirated. Also if they put the same V8 into it that the bigger S and RS models have they risk overpowering the car. I mean a turbo V8 RS5 would be just a 10 second ECU upgrade away from having 560hp. What Audi screwed up here that for a high revving naturally aspirated V8 it's smarter to have a light chassis that makes the car more agile and pair heavier cars like the bigger S models with the turbo engines that have more torque especially in the lower rev range.

It's not "down" on torque for a naturally aspirated engine. The relevant question is the power to weight ratio. See Matt's video on the coupe, it's plenty fast and handles just fine. It's not a Porsche Cayman GTS or Turbo, but those are completely different cars altogether.

Easily the Worst Generation of Audi RS yet compared to it's competition. They needed to have a decent HP advantage over their competition if they where going to go with such a High reving Low Torque Engine to make up for it, considering it has Less HP then the C63 it wasn't going to end well.
@jimmyhoffa9
@jimmyhoffa9 10 жыл бұрын
Different age/generation of engines though. The problem Audi has-as do many manufacturers, it's not a question of can they build a beast of a car, but rather should they. No-one is gonna buy an R8 convertible if the next gen RS5 can rape it in a race.
@ScottZ370
@ScottZ370 10 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah but whose going to buy the RS5 if the TTRS can outrun it? It's not all about performance, it's about the price tag if you can afford a r8 you get the r8 even though the v8 is slower to 60mph than the RS4
@jimmyhoffa9
@jimmyhoffa9 10 жыл бұрын
S Miller In the performance sector, performance is a big issue. An RS4 will hold it's own against a V8 R8, but that's because they use the same engine. In V8 guise the R8 is typically seen as a powerful sports car, much like 911's are. In V10 form, it's a supercar.
@ScottZ370
@ScottZ370 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah but that's the thing, the RS4 is cheaper than the R8 and probably abit faster in its current 444 bhp guise but because image and perceived wealth is important in expensive cars, people will buy the R8 over the RS4 in most cases if they have the money. Hence it's not all about performance. But I am not saying performance is not a big factor, just that it is not the only factor.
@jimmyhoffa9
@jimmyhoffa9 10 жыл бұрын
S Miller Well no, I'd ball that bullshit to be honest. Whether you have an RS5 or an R8 people will think you have dollah, and you'll look boss parking up. The R8 is a mid engine, and when released was described as one of the best cars to ever drive. The RS5 in comparison is a front heavy car with Audi's trademark understeer at the limit.

Uh... why does ANYONE EVER buy a convertible??? For the FUN of it of course. There's nothing like the wind in your hair on a beautiful day with the music blaring and a nice twisty / country / mountain / desert / ocean road fading behind you in the rear view. That's fun enough in a base model V6 Mustang convertible that you rent in Hawaii... or along the Oregon coast. But FVCK man... the RS5 sounds AMAZING... and a 5 second 0-60 is REALLY fast in the grand scheme of things. Maybe not fast by modern supercar standards. A Porsche 930 Turbo did 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. And it was one of the fastest production cars of it's day. A Ferrari 456 GT does 0-60 in about 5 seconds... as did a Ferrari 512... and a Ferrari Testarossa. A newer Mercedes SL55--another convertible--will do 0-60 closer to 4 seconds... but it's also $140,000 new. The Audi RS5 retailed for about HALF that price. So... get realistic. And you can buy a RS5 today for under $20k. That's a lot of bang for the buck.

"that supercharged V6 is nothing to write home about"? I mean that's kind of a dumb statement. especially considering you were just saying the V8 sounds better and has character etc. the 3.0T is amazing engine, reliable, plus it sounds amazing. with an exhaust you get a nice sound plus the best part is you get that Supercharger whine for days. it comes down to personal preference but i'm probably in the minority who loves the SC whines. you wanna talk about character? when the car is coming at you the SC is screaming, and as it passes you then you only hear the exhaust rumbling. that's quite the character if you ask me. but it's just personal taste at the end of the day.

$85,000 for something that entirely mediocre is just a bad joke. I'm sure some people will buy it, but nobody who knows anything about cars ever will. For that much money an F-Type is definitely preferable. For much less money I have a CTS-V wagon with a 6-speed manual, and it SMOKES RS5s all god damn day long.

I agree that the convertible isn't a good buy. I have an RS5, and wish I had 100 hp more, or wish it weighed 500 lbs less. However, it's by no means a track car, nor was it meant to be. The interior, fit and finish is nicer than Merc and BMW though, IMO.

Most still prefer 4.2 rs5 versus new 2.9, everyone is to much into numbers, what about the actual enjoyment car gives, with tune and light exhaust mods 480hp with unbeatable sound, sound is simply infectious. Dont worry about the numbers, nowadays electric cars family saloons killing super cars, so now you buying electric over v10? Or v8? I dont think so, drive one see how it drives and what feel it gives and then decide, numbers dont matter so much, unless you think you can race on roads with no potential consequences

Audis are shit. They're dolled up Volkswagens with plastic internal engine components. I don't get it. Buy a Mercedes and be happy.

Nope your right. It's a horrible car..... Keep reviewing the riced out modified piles of shit you love so much... it's where your best material seems to be. Flogging a luxury convertible down a canyon road does this businessman's sports convertible no justice.

this Audi is elegant, luxurious and high class people, but about the engine and sound... it sucks sorry... I had a 2015 A5 gas cabriolet with SLine body and is a really luxurious car I love this car, but with sound.. no, and about the price of the RS.. there are many many other better options

Looks like it'd be a boss power cruiser, it just lacks the torque like AMG's have. Sounds fucking awesome though, and for some reason in the UK RS Audi's gain alot more attention than M cars.

This car makes 0 sense! Heavy, sloppy, slow and ugly. And in a RS model? "4 wheel drive for any weather conditions"? For what whit a soft top is it particularly good?

I want to paint my stage 3, slammed b5 Passat with 19" rotor wheels that nardo gray so badly. Do I dare drop another 3 grand into a car that I am 300% financially upside down in already. Lol. Probably, because that's what us car guys do. Nothings too good for my baby.

I'm not hating on this car and I'd definitely buy this car if I had the money but 4.9 seconds for a V8 AWD is awfully slow. I think M4 cabriolet performs better.

You want subaru like awd? Convertible like a miata? V8 like a muscle car? Minimalist german styling? But cant own 4 cars at once? Seems like a good bargain to tick many boxes at once!

You don't know how to drive German cars ! you can't press the brakes to hard to do the launch control. I like your videos but you always have to say something negative about German (European) cars just because you don't understand it. You're like every jdm guys closed minded.

I love convertibles and accept the lack of rigidity, as I accept the stiffness felt by having a sports orientated car as much I accept that fuel economy is not what you buy one of those cars for either, so I never understand why motoring journalists always bring the same stupid things up? And there isn't an American car that can touch that Audi on so many levels either! Completely flawed upload

It's an exstraordinary machine, but I can't help it, to me it's ugly as hell! Al Audis are. I really think they should reconsider the styling, i mean, the front is ok, but when you come to the back, those backlights really look like some sad sad eyes to me.

When the rs5 appear, it was fair against the m3 or the c63. But now, the m4 is a lot better and the c63 will just smoke it. I think it's time to audi to do a better new rs5 (without audi's understeer pleease)

Am i the only one who thinks this car is complete bullshit? The paint, the rims, the interior, seriously nothing looks appealing to me. I actually didn't even want to mention the way it sounds, because it is hilarious even though Matt tells us it is very good. But the worst part is that its quality will be unsurprisingly good, so people will end up buying this thing ...
