That's very true about the t-stat and water pump. I'm an audi tech for 10 years now and those are definitely the most common. So are coolant fans, I see alot of mechatronics in the dsg versions and speed sensors which you have to take the whole transmission apart, I've done a few rear sports differentials, carbon in secondary air ports, cam adjusters start making noise at start up. The best one to get is a late 2014+ B8.5 because you get the CREC engine (not in USA though) which has all sorts of improvements to improve reliability, plus you will have the latest revisions of parts that were previously known to fail, including the DSG transmission. The supercharger is revised with an electromagnetic clutch that improves fuel economy and the CREC engine also introduces the essential manifold port injectors in addition to the high pressure injectors. Not only do they improve economy but they also solve the carbon build up on the valves issue. Sill, the B8x is a fantastic car, very reliable and the grip is supernatural even in heavy rain. Great B&O sound system, brake wash system so that you get instant grab with the brakes in rain, the Avant gives you plenty of load capacity and the piped in engine sound can be eliminated simply by pulling a fuse. Loads of tuning options as well, this engine is restricted at the factory, so you have to get the software modified to make any hardware changes work. Another very important design and feature is the deadlocks. One press of the fob deadlocks the car, so it can only be opened with the key and not by smashing a window etc. With this in mind, you can then remove the OBD2 fuse from the fuse panel located at the side of the dashboard and is subsequently protected by the closed door. This makes the car near enough impossible to steal unless they get your key fob (or if you have keyless entry). Easy car to work on as well, so long as you get the variety of niche tools (triple square, torx etc) and lots of pattern parts to choose from. so far mine has been incredibly reliable, more so than the Honda cars I used to own. I'll put that down to the S4 being made in only one factory in Ingolstadt, Germany rather than various factories around the world. They obviously take pride when making them.

dude first off, great vid.. 175k in a 2010 manual and it was like talking to a mirror as far as how I treat and care for it and even shared the same thoughts on the clutch lol, this just makes it more believable that it could be the original. Luckily the PCV was replaced by the dealer around 125k with the pump and Tstat before I got it but I also knew those were a must going into the search. The one time I didn't do a job myself was for a free pad and rotor install with my purchase on all corners and sure enough the "technichan" put the drilled / slotted rear rotors on backwards (like, the only case where rotors are directional too lol) It' s the rears though and I didnt notice for so long as is but now my brakes throw debris in toward the wheel in the back I guess lol. I'm just waiting for warmer weather and i'll be doing the decarbon with plugs , oil, etc and maybe even the pcv too since its right there. Just something to add on for anyone other owners reading this: If you're a DIY person who does this to save some money, are experienced, but don't have ALL the time in the world because this car is your daily/main transport and you happen to need a job done that involves the pinch bolt being removed, take it to a shop if you're on the fence ESPECIALLY if you see snow/ salt on a reg basis.. The only situation where getting the original out isn' t a complete painful battle is if you have a lift and air hammer and the patience of neatly drilling the seized bolt down to pieces without damaging the steering knuckle. Luckily, school being online and my father's gravel driveway pushed me to the right side of the fence and sure enough it took me with a german auto shop I trust 2 days (a day per side) . But on a good note, if looking for an affordable small-step wheel upgrade(only b8, not b8.5), try to see if you can get rims and/or tires off a b8 s5 (et +33 rims). Sits about perfectly flush with no rub at all if ur still at stock ride height, and if lowered you can compensate with 245 tires instead if tire rub might really be an issue. clean aggressive look, OG quality, and no extra stress on bearings from spacers Anyways, Naj seriously spot on advice man with hilarious facts on the b5 haha. I have an 8.5 s4 with similar mileage consuming about 0.4L in 8000km, the main difference between b8 and 8.5 is a revised PCV, they fail around this time too, so i would recommend you talk to a specialist or dealer about it because you can put in a latest revision b8.5 pcv, however i think some coding is involved because they operate at different release pressures. Otherwise all the other maintenance youve done is actually really good and similar to the factory list by now (canada at least). Ive driven manual a lot before this car so my clutch is still pretty good even with a 420hp dyno tune, but dont feel too bad about needing a new clutch at 130k km, i would consider it close to average for a performance and especially heavy 4wd car with heavvvvvy flywheel

I found an s4 prestige with 110k miles but in great condition and all audi dealer on time maintenance records, its listed for $25k but maybe I could get it for $22k, do you think it'd be worth it?

I’ve been looking for a b8.5 s4 recently and I am wondering the same thing. I can’t find any under 100k miles that are in my price range. Is 20-25k a good price for 100,000+ miles?

I’m not sure how the B8 S4 and A4 are considered bulletproof engines. Aren’t they notorious for having a ton of issues? The B8.5 Audi S4’s and A4’s hold that title.

For the most part, the 3.0 V6 supercharged engine is considered bullet proof, not the 2.0T 4 cylinder in the A4.

AUDI. The brand for people not smart enough to buy a Benz or Bimmer with much better reliability and far better Engineering and solidity. It's no wonder my mechanic calls AUDI "a Volkswagen with options." lol

Gotta agree with you on mercedes, top in german engineering, but BMW, doesnt win in engineering or reliability in any way at all.. Id rather have a honda accord over a BMW bc at least i'll get to my destination haha

Your mechanic just can’t afford one 😂 BMW’s and reliability can’t be used in the same sentence
