Great to see this SWB Quattro getting the respect it deserves. I spent a weekend in one back in the 80s during a visit to the factory. I was visiting an engineer I met the previous summer during the 5000 Quattro intro at Road America. Hans and I spent time driving the rural roads and a trip to Munich. Absolutely brutal cornering and braking. Hans told me they lost money on everyone they sold due to the tremendous cost to build them. Very special indeed. Cheers all!

Ultra cool. Imagine Audi or someone else doing that in todays softened up versions. Also imagine Audi making the present compact RS as racy as this old one... No, now it's all about the amount of electric infotainment you get combined with all sorts of adjustable disco light all over. What a shame. Btw. to me at least, these old school Recaro seats are just so much nicer than the new present day ones. And they look the part! Anyway, a HUGE thanks to Harry for making all these really great car videos, being that the type locally made like this, or the touring videos like the Testarossa goes Sahara etc. I also like the fact, that Harry's videos are for free to watch, and the commercials in them are kept down to a very low level and discrete - not bothering the video it self. In you own quiet way, you are simply the better out there, a quarter mile in front of the competition, incl. the tv-stations. Your videos Harry, will become as legendary as the cars and motorcycles themselves. Thanks again. Kind regards.

When I was a young man in the early eighties the car that got my juices flowing the most were these cars, it just felt like the future had arrived and a little later I think it was the 100 which had the first truly flush side glass which looked so futuristic, Audi were on fire. Sadly for me the current fair from Audi leaves me cold.

ianmedium, I know exactly what you mean. I always admired Audi engineering in the 80s and early 90s. They were that little bit different, with some proper engineering built in to the design. They also managed to avoid the attention of the red braces and filofax brigade that ruined the image of BMW and Porsche. They were driver's cars, cool only to those in the know. That 10v soundtrack was intoxicating too. But then Gene Hunt came along, and all of a sudden Audi was on the radar of all the wrong sort of people who ruined the brand's image. VW Group haven't helped much either. The S and RS Series cars are still pretty special, but not quite as much as Audi used to be. As for the rest of the range, well, oh dear. I feel like I'm sitting in an expensive Skoda with a lot of them. The Audi distinction has been lost. Which is a crying shame. It's almost criminal.

In 1982-83, while waiting for the school bus every morning, a pearlescent white Ur-Quattro used to drive past. More than once I missed the last bus just to hear and see it growl past. Against the usual Cortinas (occasional Sierra 1.6s) Marinas and Chevettes it looked like it was from another planet. I know that's an over-used cliché, but it was just so different, and so charismatic with that engine note and stance on the road. It is so ironic that on urban roads like those we saw in London, we now need high suspension travel and compliant high profile tyres. But we get exactly the opposite. Built by Audi when engineers ran the place, not stylists, marketing hipsters and mediocre managers, they are still living off this car's image today.

I am so delighted to have found this channel. What TG and Grand Tour could be now if they just went back to the cars, and spared us the guff.

I believe the rake on the windscreen is standard 80, which is steeper than the coupé.

Was looking for this comment, correct it has a regular 80 sedan front not coupé.

You are both correct and it is quite noticeable. Apparently this was done to reduce reflection of the instruments on the screen. I’ve never driven an Audi Coupe or Quattro or that era but I had a KK 80 Quattro for a while. It was a fantastic car and wish I had held onto it.

Such a pleasure watching your videos - thank you! Especially since most of the other content creators only care for modern cars. Who look all alike and only try to outperform the competition by a steeper price tag. Your videos have that authenticity in the passion for the cars that I remember from reading the car magazines.
