Audi SQ2 - From HATE to LOVE in 1500 miles !

On paper the Audi SQ2 is a practical compact SUV with 300 horsepower and four wheel drive so it should be a car the is right up my street. However, my time with this pocket rocket from Audi didn't start well !
In this video I fill the SQ2 with stuff and take it on a mega drive to put it through its paces.

I've got a "normal" Q2 sline 35 tfsi and agree about the practicality, actually like the sticky up screen better than looking down at a dash one, I came out of a much more powerful Allroad but enjoying the refresh

Interesting review the fuel consumption makes this a no for me as I use my car for work and it just would be too expensive to run, must admit the interior looks underwhelming and I don't get the small crossover but having driven a couple of them I am considering buying one.

Very interesting , especially as this has so much in common with my Ateca. Despite being a cheaper member of the VAG group I prefer the interior of the Ateca , agreeing with you that a dash mounted touch screen is preferable. Also many other Cupra owners find they get better mpg in sport mode , yet it holds the revs more , doesn`t make sense. I`m about to make my way back from Penryn , stop off in Bath , its bright so hoping for some driving fun. Thanks for another great video.

The mini still knocks spots off that SQ2, more stylish, better interior, probably not as much luggage room, but as a gigging musician I can get my bass gear, the PA, small lighting rig in and still have room for a passenger, room enough I say!! And like you dear boy I absolutely hate those 'stick on ipads'

Just got an immaculate 2020 Q2 1.0 sport second hand with daft low mileage, the drive is great and feels more like a 1.4 with a fair bit of poke. We didn't want to spend loads and got a good deal with a nice 5 year warranty fro an authorised Audi dealer so we're laughing. Out of all the similar SUV type cars we test drove (Seat/VW/Renault/Nissan) the Audi was by far the nicest to drive, felt more stable and rock solid, steering and suspension were tight but fun, it feels well engineered so it looks like this nice drive translates up the range. Sure the interior isn't high end but we weren't bothered about that for the money and it does what it needs to without any fuss. It's also cheaper to run than our old ten year 1.3 Corsa! With the masses of inside space we can cart kids around safely and carry lots of stuff if we need, it's congestion charge exempt and cheap to insure. What's not to love? We love it and with the warranty will probably go for a more expensive model in 5 years or so, although I would never buy one of these brand new, I like having a decent holiday each year.... :)

Pete. It seems you, like Joe Achilles with the new RS Q3, has turned from a fast SUV sceptic, to a tentative admirer. Take yourself forward around 20 years to my age, when you have a back like mine with a petrol head mindset of around 20 years ago, and you'll see why these quick SUVs make sense........you can actually get in and out of the damn things and still enjoy a bit of fun. That's why my RS Q3 is a keeper!....Even the Pup seemed happy.

So being of a certain age (55) practicality counts for a lot. So that’s why I’m on my second small SUV / crossover, a Honda HRV 1.5 Sport. The magic seats are simple but clever, especially for shopping as the boot is taken up by the dogs crate. Still feels fast enough when you need it though!

Kevin Cross You’ve made a good choice with the Honda. I had a 2016 EX, before I was rear ended at approx. 55/60mph by a van (driver didn’t see traffic slowing on motorway, somehow) then flung into the path of a lorry which sideswiped me and sent me head on into a concrete barrier. Car was obviously a write off, but I walked away without a scratch - I only sprained my knee due to the impact against the dashboard. I honestly believe that if I was driving a small car, I’d be underground now.

Jacob Thompson I had a 1.6 diesel top spec one, that was great, wasn’t looking to change it, but diesel market etc etc. The 1.5 Sport is more fun though, and I like the body mods. Still think it’s one of the best looking “SUV’s” out there. Horses for courses of course!

My own experience in a diesel Golf dsg is that “eco” mode is a waste of time. Economy is no better and yet the driving feel is less enjoyable at the same time. My conclusion has been that it is mainly a marketing tool that costs nothing for the manufacturer to incorporate, to make it look good on an eco-credentials spec sheet. The best eco device is a sensitive right foot. This right foot device also costs nothing, is infinitely variable, and its mode can be changed in nano-seconds without having to go through any menus 😊

As a downsizing replacement for our amazing SQ5 plus diesel, (350bhp, 700Nm) this looks to be one my Mrs S wants. Got to get Vorsprung variant though to get all bells and whistles. But ex demo or 10k runners proving rather elusive..You should have driven to St.Mawes from Meva for the real B road experience..

I am going to try one of these. I told the Audi showroom I would probably swap the A6 for a Clubman or Countryman Cooper S and they suggested having a go in an SQ2 if I wanted a fun car with decent practicality. It's worth a look, it's not a car I had ever thought about but the performance does look impressive and the dealer is wafting tempting figures under my nose.

What's your view on the request for people not going down to Cornwall on holiday at this time? Certainly the local Facebook group are strongly against visitors coming down due to the risk of passing the virus on to the locals, many of whom are in the at risk groups. I normally visit Meva in November, if not several times before, and am really hoping that it is a return to at least some semblance of normality by then.

We have family down there as my wife is from St Austell. We go down to visit them and that is why we bought another home down there. I think if you practice good hand-washing and take appropriate distancing measures it should be fine. I ma sure you will be fine by November and believe me people will be wanting visitors to return to help the Cornish economy that relies so heavily on tourism 👍

Hi Pete £48k for that car is a lot of money, for that money I would rather buy a low mileage S3 or RS3. I cannot see myself paying that kind of money for a SQ2. My wife drives the Q3 35TSi , very lovely car and MPG is Fantastic, nice review as always 😊

Two responses Robert. Firstly yes this was filmed over a week ago on one of the first days of the loo roll buying mystery, hence my comment. Secondly I needed enough cleaning products (loo roll, cleaner, bleach, dishwasher tabs, washing machine tabs, washing up liquid clothes etc) to run our holiday rental for the season. That works out to be a lot. It is part of our service agreement with the management company. Having just put all our savings into refurbishing the house we want to try and start renting it our but that isn't looking great at the moment !! In terms of owning this crisis, as a freelancer you are welcome to look at my work diary for the next 6 months and you will see that I am as buggered as the next guy. No panic buying from me I can assure you !!!!

You seem like an intelligent man, why not use your channel to get the message across? 1. Taking too much leaves empty shelves means people start panic buying because it appears there's not enough. 2. If most of us put ourselves through shutdown for 12 weeks only to find others have been carrying on regardless it will be unsucessful & a totally pointless exercise; it will run and run. Just take the advice we've been given, stay in unless its essential. We will all be affected by this so let's get on with doing the time. At least many will be in our own homes. At 400 yards, you can tell the Mini will be a Mini. At 50 yards, you'll notice the badge on the Audi that you thought was a VW or a Seat or a Skoda or a.... EDIT - I've never understood Audi with their "stuck on" infotainment system. It's OK exterior wise, but it doesn't scream that it's a sporty "S" and on the whole, it just looks very plain to me. Oh! And if any Peddlers need WC rolls, I know where PP's Mevagissey house is :-))... I'm taking orders!!

Love Charley, absolutely hate those high up cars... I like low cars which squat on the road. The Audi is an absolutely foul colour as well. I have never been to Cornwall or Devon as I’m from Notts and so the thought of a five hour drive is too much. I am hoping within the next couple of years to get a van, hopefully a VW Crafter, to convert to a stealth camper so my hubster and I can take holidays around the UK. With me having Fibromyalgia, I get whacked out too easily so I’ll be able to dive in the back for some zeds. If we get the van (need to sell my mothers bungalow first which isn’t easy in this current climate) I hope to go to Dawlish and a few other places my hubster and 1 of my sons have already been to.

Have to say I think Audi are starting to loose it a bit, styling interior and exterior but the fact they have gone back to real tailpipes, have to agree with you on the tablet on the dash what’s all that about, I’m a great fan of the first generation sq5 then they bring out the very very generic 2nd generation which in my opinion looked horrendously normal inkeeping with the rest of the q5 range and no special little bits which the “S” should have, my name for the colour of your sq2 is battle ship grey, keep up the good vids

The biggest problem with this car is the Cupra Ateca! Much much cheaper, more standard equipment,looks better, more useable and about the same performance!
