The only Subaru AWD systems that could match the Quattro are the VTD and DCCD systems. The regular Continuous and Active AWD of the lower-end models can't compare well to the Quattro. DCCD is probably the best, since it actually has differentials throughout the whole drivetrain (center, front, rear), while VTD (center, rear) depends on the VDC (stability/traction control) to help distribute torque to the wheels that need it.

I live in the UK. It is usually either warm and wet or cold and wet. Subaru does the job just fine whatever the road surface. RWD BMW's and Mercs are a joke on compacted snow or ice, actually they're just plain dangerous IMO.

Up here in north (Norway), there is almost winter all the year. We have a Subaru Outback 2.0 Diesel. We have never had a problem with it, it´s so good all year round. We have ordered a new Subaru Outback 2015 mod. The only difference is that we´ve ordered it with 2.5 petrol. Creds to Subaru and Japan that have brought us this masterpiece

I'll always stay loyal to my Audi Quattro vehicles. They are great in all seasons and just a joy to drive. Have a b7 a4 right now and I still adore the car as if it were the very first day i got it!

@Loscaldazar not with 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive is suppsed to make to the car better stick to the road and it gives better road control (exactly what audi does) and subaru is like a rear wheel drive just with a bit of power in the front thats why its drifts (and thats not what a AWD car supposed to do)

I know. You're right. Both Audi and Subaru actually rally and have many world championships between them. I don't like Beemers now, but they did have lovely rally cars in the '80s. Sure, it would be interesting to know how they do on the same tyres, but most people are going to drive them on what the manufacturer sells them with. No doubt Audi quattro & Subaru symmetrical AWD has the dominant systems in terms of AWD. Mercedes 4matic is heavily biased towards safety, and BMW is just another me-too in the market. Think I'm pulling a fast one? Subaru Outbacks & Foresters all go off road, so can the Audi Q5 & Q7. Mercedes has the ML & G-wagon which are excellent too. BMW X5 & X6 aren't even badged as actual SUVs by BMW themselves (so what makes you think they are?)

BMW's suck off road. X3's, X5's & X6's also suck on the road. You're far better off with a regular 3 or 5 series BMW as a road car. The X series BMW's are for people with too much money and not enough intelligence. They are posers cars but people in the know just laugh at them. If you want pure traction for the road Subaru is the best followed by Audi. I wouldn't touch a BMW or a Mercedes 4Matic.

talkychris the 3 and 5 series respectively are probably better on the road than the X3 or X5 (yeah what a surprise), but the X3 and X5 are better on the road than M class or GLK class or Q5 or Q7, or at least they're aspiring for it. "sporty suv crossover" let's call it, which fits the BMW philosophy, being sportier than their rivals. Merc on the other hand is focused primarily on the comfort, which is why more managers and CEOs drive E and S-class than 5 or 7-series. Except the AMG versions, which are completely mad, shredding tires along the way. The RS audis with their more front biased AWDs are way more civilized in this category.

***** I think they are about par. The term SUV in itself is a oxymoronic term; there's nothing sporty about a 4000lb+ truck that is 6in off the ground. BMW M cars used to be very racing oriented but now since BMWs are getting floaty I'd take any Audi RS or Mercedes AMG (even Cadillac V-series) over a BMW.

The best AWD system is by far, Subaru. Second is Audi. X-drive and others perform well to support driver to achieve good road driving. These systems are mostly supported by electronics. Mitsubishi S-awc, Subaru and Audi have center differential, and here the big difference. Read about the Scandinavian flick.

Its not bs. Subarus that are sold in Europe are all made in Japan. North American spec vehicles aren't even close to the build and material quality they sell in Europe. European spec Legacy, which I have seen, is way more upscale than what we get here. Paint is way thicker on Euro spec. Seats and interior are onpar with Audi and BMW. Legacy starts at around $45k and diesel versions are almost $65k. Not $20k like here. Don't think I would spend $45 on Subaru, ever. I would rather buy two.

I think one of the biggest mistake that Mercedes keeps repeating is not allowing the ESP to be fully switched off in their cars. So disappointing! I think if that was possible the C class would have had better results in this video...

On snow and ice tires make a lot of difference and a FWD with snow tires will outperform any AWD with performance summer tires... I don't understand what that guy says but I can't see any reference to tires in this video. And BTW I have a Subaru...

I watched a video with a FWD Skoda Yeti on Winter tyres vs an AWD Skoda Yeti on Summer tyres. The test was done on snow and ice. The AWD Yeti still pulled away from a standing start better and it still climbed better. The FWD yeti on winter tyres cornered better, was safer going down a slope and braked much better than the AWD Yeti on the summer tyres. I also own a Subaru (Legacy 2.5i). I drive in the summer on Pirelli P-Zero Nero tyres and have a set of Hankook i cept evo winter tyres for the winter. AWD + the correct tyres for the season beats any FWD or RWD set up, especially in winter. When the Hankook tyres are worn I'll replace them with Nokian WR A3 winter tyres but the Hankooks do a good enough job. We also have an Alfa Romeo with the Nokian winter tyres, they stick like glue. I only have have the Hankook tyres at the moment as they came as a deal with my spare set of winter wheels.

I think the most important test here is the "moose test" where the cars had to do an avoidance maneuver between the cones. The Subaru did such an extreme fishtail what the hell was that? If youre driving in the snow you definitely dont want that to happen while youre driving. That Audi quattro, on the other hand, did DAAMN fine with that test; and so did the others.. Not Subaru, oops.

Of course, none of these cars are tuned for rally, the Subaru is the most Rally competent vehicle out of the vehicle's tested without after market components, Subaru own the rally league and European cars own track based events such as the Lemans' 24 and the god like McLaren F1 GTR. Wow ok European cars are great luxury cars and good in rain and slick conditions but I have owned 11 differant cars and 3 subarus. I live in northern vt usa 5 mi from canada near a big ski mtn last winter we had a bad snow storn I pulled a honda crv AWD, ford flex AWD, mercedes sedan AWD, bmw suv AWD, and a mini van lol all up jay peak mtn road with near bald winter tires with a subaru leagacy proves there awd surpasses all in awd look up sti vs evo winter challenge
