Audi Wins IMSA Race in Rare Video

The duo of Hans Stuck and Walter Röhrl won the IMSA Kodak Copier 500 kilometer race at Watkins Glen on September 24, 1989 by 20 seconds.
The West Germans, driving an Audi 90 Quattro, took the checkered flag 20 seconds ahead of teammate Hurley Haywood in the International Motor Sports Association event.
Third was the duo of Steve Millen and Jeff Kline, in a Nissan 300ZX-Turbo, one lap down.
From 19:31 - 27:07 there are audio problems that I tried my best to fix. This is how the audio came out of the camcorder back in 1989. I'm as disappointed today as I was 30+ years ago because the video was some of the best I've ever taken. I guess I just got too excited after jumping the fence to record the footage right on the guardrail! *

Stuck started from pole position and led 60 of the 92 laps, averaging 107.747 mph. It was Stuck's fifth GTO class win of the season and the fourth 1-2 finish for the Audi team.
Al Bacon of Kingsport, Tenn., driving a Mazda MX-6, took GTU honors, and Robert Borders of Farmingdale, N.J., in a Chevrolet Beretta, won the American Challenge class.

The 1989 Camel GT Championship season was the 19th season of the IMSA GT Championship series. It was for GTP and Lights classes of prototypes, as well as Grand Touring style cars which ran in the GTO and GTU classes. This round of the series was for only the GTO / GTU cars.

Rob-I think i was likely in the shot when you pan the outside of T6. Probably walked by you at some point as i spent most of this race in the boot. The Audi’s were amazing. Heading to basement to rummage through old pics of this race now….

I think that might have actually been the Mercury that was following the Audi, they were running Turbos as well at the time.

Thanks Gary. In terms of video from Watkins Glen, I only have one more NASCAR video left to upload so I don’t think there’s any more beyond what you see in the 1989 video. If you’re interested in F1, I have more video left to upload from 1988-1991. Good luck with your project!

Still trying to find recordings of the 1990 races, unfortunately IMSA has a bad track record on keeping their history unlikes other series. Hopefully more 1990 stuff will surface!
