Thank you Julian, as always your work is a model of clarity and real world analysis, so helpful cutting through the hype. There is something very reassuring about your no-nonsense approach, about how objective measurements and precision matter--especially during a pandemic of both a virus & "alternative facts." I hope you and yours are safe, symptom free and doing well. Take care.

Best audio interface reviews ever! To the point, no fluff and pure numbers which makes them a lot more objective. It was really helpful for me because you’re probably the only person out there thoroughly testing headphone output performance. Most people care about input performance or studio monitor outputs (which is fair) but for me having the best possible headphone output (taking into the account the impedance of the headphones) was really important as I don’t have studio monitors. So thanks a ton for your spreadsheet and detailed explanation.

Great review! Instant subscription on your channel. Easily the best reviews of audio interfaces I've seen - scientific enough, but also understandable enough. Great work. About the input signal metering: this is of course the "bigger brother" of iD14, but I have iD44 and it at least shows the input level of the incoming signal with the led lights, which was one of the selling points for me. :) But again: might be different with iD14.

Hey there Julian, Happy New year--praying it really will be a happy one for the world, and I hope you and yours are well and safe. I really appreciate your work, the information is presented objectively and in an entertaining and somehow reassuring way, and I always benefit from your insight and expertise. Well done! Wondered if you'll be reviewing the just released MK II version of the ID14 and the ID4. I currently have the original ID for and have been very happy with that but need to do some work in stereo-- I'm torn between the idea of having two new beautiful Audient preamps with incredible conversion versus getting what I gather are very good (equally good?) ones on the MOTU M4, along with a couple of line inputs. The JFET input option with Audient is great to have, but you lose one of your mic inputs using it, but I could use my current ID for for that and still have stereo recording on the new model. But I'm going to hold off on a purchase decision till you've had a chance to enlighten us! (Hoping you're working on a review already!) Take care.

You probably make the best audio related reviews I've ever seen on KZbin. Im currently looking for a new Interface. I initially wanted to go with the Motu M4 but after waiting 3 months I've given up hope that it'll ever be in stock anywhere. Can you give a little preview on your upcoming reviews? Im particularly interested in the Audient iD14 MKII and the Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2. Sadly the manufacturers aren't as transparent as I'd like when it come to the specs. That doesn't exactly give me high hopes.

Amazing review, as always, Julian! I've asked this on another video but did you consider testing higher-end interfaces? Yay! My interface! Thanks for reviewing it! Some comments: In regards to when you say it doesn't have hardware metering, it does. If you have the mic muted in the ID software it won't display metering of the mic on the interface. If you unmute the mic in the ID software the LED's react to the sound entering the mic :) There is a positive and a negative thing about the power connector. The positive is that your volume levels remain the same if you shut down your machine. Where as if you just use USB it resets. The negative part is that you can't turn it off. It always remains on...so the LED is always lit.

Thanks for the post. Can you test the following, please? If you turn the “Input-DAW” knob to the right, does the mic input levels “fade” away or you can still meter the mic properly?
@FoodTechLife
@FoodTechLife 3 жыл бұрын
@@SocietateaAscendenta You mean the big knob on the id14? Let's say I'm playing a song on my phone and I can see the meters moving accordingly. Then I turn the nob either to lower or increase the volume it switches to show me lowering or increasing the levels. Then it goes away and back to metering what's coming out of my phone.
@SocietateaAscendenta
@SocietateaAscendenta 3 жыл бұрын
@@FoodTechLife Thanks for the reply! I meant, if the id14 has a similar function like the id4 (if you search for a picture of it, you will see the "INPUT - DAW" dial knob). On the id4 they say that if you keep the knob all the way to the left, than you can meter the INPUT 100%, but if you turn it to the right (DAW), than the meters will show the incoming signal of both the input or DAW or only just the sound coming from the DAW, if you turn it all the way to the right - which is LOGICAL. But I am looking for an interface, that I can set to show me ONLY the input meters of the Mic, for example, NO MATTER how much DAW sound I let playing in my headphones. Do not know if it makes any sense? :)
@FoodTechLife
@FoodTechLife 3 жыл бұрын
@@SocietateaAscendenta I see - well the ID14 doesn't have that extra knob. On a basic level I think it will show the sound coming from your headphones as well. Can you change that through the ID interface software? I don't know, I've never had the need to do that. But just write to the people at Audient. The support team will answer any inquiries you might have.

@fu Jhi, when u use id14, u can control the volume of headphones in the driver for having more precision... So: the lowest volume is -128db for id14, and obv u can't hear nothing... And u shouldn't go above - 12db beacuse after this "threshold" there is a digital gain (if I'm not wrong) or something like this that adds little bit of analogue clipping like, which i don't like.... So when im at -12 db with my dt990 pro the volume is pretty good, but sometimes when I'm mixing and the volume of my channel in the mixer are low, i would love have some db more of headroom... So id14 drives pretty good 250 ohm headphones, but it depends a lot by your purpose! Should be fine for most users with 250ohm i think... Sorry for my english hope u understand brooo

Man, I am stuck because I had a M-Audio 192/4 and it was fantastic but #1 the drivers sucked ass with BSOD and constant having to reinstall. #2 M-Audio has zero after sales for registered unit support. I sent it back after 3 weeks. I now have a MOTU M2 and not happy as it arrived wonky and after 10-20s the blue magic smoke was released. Support never once offered to help me and only did copy and paste jobs. I just sent it back today. Btw, the M-Audio had fantastic latency down to 192khz 16 samples or around 3.5-4ms of latency. M2 was crap at 192khz 512 samples or just sitting there doing nothing I could not ever get better than ~11ms latency. What I am looking for is a company with good Windows 10 drivers and actually has support worth a damn but I have yet to find such a beast. WTF?

One thing I want to see also for future videos is Latency with VST Plugins before switching to higher buffer size. For live keyboard performances or FX. Interfaces behave differently with low buffer size.

I absolutely agree! It seems that the converters are better, and it has a usb-c cable used also to supply power to the unit this time. The new model has also the possibility to set up the loopback function, a new feature compared to the previous one! I hope also that this time, the converters's dinamic range declared, could be similiar to the Julian's measurements

I use the Audient iD14 in my voiceover studio. Happy to read such a positive review. Totally agree on the steps of the monitoring knob. I have used this with Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (250 ohm) and Sony MDR-7520 (24 ohm) headphones. Have to turn it all the way up to get an ok signal level w the DT770, making it problematic for fine editing, whereas there is plenty of headroom with the 7520 to make your ears bleed if you like that sort of thing. The low roll off at the lower impedance is an interesting issue but with spoken word, I have not encountered an issue, especially as the 7520s perform at 8-50k frequency response, so Sony said. (Alas, my favorite headphones ever can no longer be gotten.) HUGE CAVEAT to the iD14: the firmware is funky in working w Protools. There is a STATE file that you have to find in your library and trash on a regular basis because frequently, you'll open a session, or even continue a session and find you have NO headphone monitoring. The meters are moving in the DAW but no sound in the interface. Super painful because the fix is trashing the STATE file, then pulling the plugs on the id14, rebooting the Mac, and plugging the iD14 back in. But the good news is usually you only have to do that once per occurrence. Usually. Sometimes it takes two restarts, which is really a serious loss of time and a major annoyance. That is what has cooled my jets on recommending the iD14 any more. Audient is at a loss to explain the problem and because it comes from the UK, the whole servicing methodology and time frame was too much of a pain to do (I'd have to buy an equal backup interface to keep working, and why do I want to do that?) that I continue to live with the issue.

Hello Julian. Thanks For The Great Reviews On Audio Interfaces. I Have A Question I'd Like You To Guide Me On, Between the ( Audient ID4, ID14 and the Motu M2/M4 ) Which has the best Converters for mixing music professionally? Which One Would You Recommend For A professional Mix Engineer?

Excelente Review! I own an Audient id14. I was wondering how this interface compares to the ssl 2 in terms of the converters' dynamic range. The id 14 has higher dinamic range. Does it have a positive impact for listening? So as to have a more accurate representation of frequencies while mixing. Which one has a better listening experience? Id14 has 117 db vs ssl 110db. What's your insight?

What do you suggest - I narrowed down the choice to UR RT2 or ID14? to record vocals ... Arrangements are mostly with patterned instruments - Korg Kronos, Yamaha Motif. No live guitars.
